Currently favourite for the Notts County job.

Also missed his media duties today....

Yep, as much as I would like to see Grimsby back in the league(mainly because of their fans), I can't help but feel like Hurst doesn't deserve league footy unless he manages it with the Mariners. It's almost like cheating if you know what I mean ;)

I'd personally not be all that fussed either way. Though marginally better this year, it is frustrating seeing such small progress being made. Especially when Barnet and Bristol Rovers rebuilt quicker than us. More so now when Cheltenham are doing so well.

That said, it would be unsettling to lose a manager and who knows what we'd get in. Especially it being January, which is a vital time for us to get the players in we need.

If Hurst does go, Hockaday clearly knows the area having been used as a pundit on BBC Humberside in the recent past, can use a computer (which is key according to Fenty) and has managed in the Championship. He also has a lot of contacts.

Probably still speechless after Saturday :ds:

No doubt, he saw his side draw 1-1 after seeing his side booted off the pitch by a side who managed one shot on goal in 90 mins.

Tbh whether Hurst goes or not it wont make a big difference. Grimsby aren't good enough to challenge us or Cheltenham whoever their manager is. Gloucs domination all the way.

Grimsby will finish 3rd or 4th and then bottle it in the play-offs.

If Hurst goes, I could see Wayne Burnett going there. He's loved at Grimsby and it'd be a quick route back in for him.

If Hurst goes, it could either send us out of sync or breathe new life into us; I'm guessing it would be the former, the players are fond of Hurst. If he stays, it's as you were, easing into the playoffs with an outside chance of the title (don't know what Chris is on about, he seems to think Forest Green are good).

Getting Hurst pinched in January would be a horrible sucker punch and would force us to act quickly in order to be able to utilise the transfer window. Ignoring the fact that he would probanly not come this far North, one of the only people I would want as a replacement just took the Dagenham job a few days ago. Continuing that theme, Richard Hill wouldn't be a terrible appointment but again unlikely due to location.

That makes a former manager of ours, who is a wizard on Microsoft Powerpoint, a shoe-in. Enjoy, Grimsby.

Why would Hurst go to a smaller club - one that Lincoln City and Mansfield regard as their main local derby - from one that will, one day, rightfully reassume their status above Hull City, as they been for most of their history...

Notts County reporter Leigh Curtis has just tweeted: "Notts are very impressed with Hurst's record at Grimsby. They also like John Sheridan a lot. Sense it will be between those two.

"Sheridan is on a rolling contract so a lot easier to get out of. Hurst situation more difficult especially with John Fenty as chairman."

John Fenty isn't chairman.

Does this Hurst chap actually know what he's doing, then?

Bare in mind that we aren't looking for miracles, just someone to turn up and show our very expensively assembled squad how to concede less than three goals in a game and win the occasional away match.

If you're after a guy to just do those two things then honestly, he's your ideal man.

He will win you away games and he will tighten you up. In fact he's an absolute expert at the away win.

However he'll also have you pretty one dimensional and unlikely to change a game around if it's not going your way. I did some research last season, the amount of times we'd rescued anything from conceding the first goal was quite frankly pathetic. We're forever having teams park the bus here and he's still yet to find a way round it. You'll go on a good run, then he'll drop a couple of your better players. You'll bring in a good striker, he'll score goals then Hurst will get him to totally change his style because he likes them to defend too. The striker stops scoring so Hurst has him out the door.

He's effectively been surpassed by a number of better managers at this league and we've stuck with him. More fool us IMO, he's had a good budget and we've just bimbled into the play offs 3 times. Putting on a good showing in those once. A lot of our fans like him, they tend to be the ones who willingly accept second best just because it's what we're used to by now. I personally think he's very very lucky to still be the manager after effectively failing 3 seasons in a row now.

All that said, he may do a decent job. He'll probably stabilise you and address the problems you need. But he's not ruthless nor tactically savvy enough to break his negative mould and drag a side to a league title IMO.

He certainly likes having tight defences. We've had one of the best defences (GA column wise) in the division for the past 3 or 4 seasons now. As a result, we've done pretty well on the road under him. He is prone to dropping a tactical/selection clanger, but in fairness to him he does seem to be doing that less frequently now than he was over the last few years. One of his strengths has been his activity in the transfer market. He seems to be able to spot potential when it's not necessarily on the radar of other managers. Likes to keep his cards close to his chest when being interviewed about this too, which I quite like personally. Not scared to kick first teamers out of the squad for acting up too, which is kind of annoying when he releases arguably your best attacking player in the second half of the season however he seems to instill a sense of harmony within his squads. The general opinion seems to be that he is respected by the players.

A significant criticism would be lack of attacking endeavour at times, often being accused of playing for a draw or just looking to soak up pressure and rely on one or two chances to win 1-0. As such, we drop frustrating points. He also never accepts responsibility for bad results, but perhaps it's a tad naive to excpect a manager to do that anyway.

Despite his development not being particularly rapid, overall I'd rate him as a promising young manager who does seem to be addressing some of his flaws and I think he will go on to have a decent career.

He sounds like the total opposite of our team currently. We score loads of goals but haven't conceded less than two in a game since October, we're great at home but can't pick up a point on the road and we've come back from two down to get points twice in the last few weeks alone (and are constantly throwing away leads). Maybe they can meet in the middle somewhere.

A couple of those problems that you've mentioned could be solved just by the a change in league format, as well. You don't get as many teams who turn up and put eleven men behind the ball in League Two and, obviously, there's three automatic promotion spots to aim at rather than one.

For all the criticism I've aimed at Hurst in the past I think he'd be a pretty decent fit for County at this moment in time. He's a steady pair of hands and I'm confident he'd improve them in the short term. If he was your man to get you automatically promoted next season I'm not so sure but as Jacob says, there are extra spaces available.

But the circumstances are different at Grimsby, I just don't think he's ambitious enough tactically to win them the league.

Fenty claims no contact has been made, I find that hard to believe personally especially given they interviewed candidates on the same day Hurst went missing for the afternoon.

Fenty isn't surprised he's getting attention after the success we've had....

Fucking hell.

To go back on this, you mention a number of better managers however most of them have not only been predominantly Southern based but have deep roots in Southern Non-League football and therefore were not really viable options for us due to location. Perhaps the only one of those who has beaten Hurst to promotion that might have been an option for us is now managing a club lower than us in the table. For me it's not a case of accpeting second, it's more to do with whether or not there is a realistic and better alternative available.

I don't get your constant animosity towards Hurst.
He might not be everybodys cup of tea but under him we are consistently around the top 4 and but for an incompetent referee in the P/O Final he would have got us back into the Football League last season, or have you forgotten that?
Also he seems to be a very good man manager, and all the players in the squad or out of it all seem to like him.
We are a lot better off with him than without him, make no mistake.

Would Hurst likely to be given the boot if he doesn't go up this season? If so, neither job's particularly long term, then, especially with Trigger Trew at County.

From the outside, and only really basing this on his time at Grimsby, he gets team to where they should be given the budget available but doesn't seem to pull up any trees or suggest there's been any overachievement. Seems to build good squads, but do they perform as well as they should? Maybe I'm being slightly harsh on the latter point because of the available promotion places in the National League and maybe that has skewed things ever so slightly.

I think he'd sort a few things out short term at County, but I'd doubt any long term fit, particularly, as I say, with Trew sacking managers left, right and centre after 3 weeks or something daft. He's have no time to do anything.

Paul Hurst has got a great eye for a player, can put together a great defence and make a team solid all over. He never gives anything away in interviews and won't stand for a bad attitude.
His weaknesses are that he is sometimes too defensive, not great at substitutions and freezes players out.

He (along with Scott) stopped the rot at the club and got us challenging for promotion on a consistent basis and brought in players who want to play for the club and the team itself has a good bond.

Would I be disappointed if he left? Yes
Would I would disappointed to see a new, fresh approach brought in? No

Depends whether we'd be able to find that manager.
