Harsher penalties for parole violaters
Sparked mainly by this story http://www.buzzfeed.com/richardhjames/durham-students-claim-new-crackdown-on-drinking-could-put-mo
What ever happened to personal responsibility? The bit that got me was "Fenton said the reaction from the authorities had been too skewed towards dealing with alcohol, rather than making sure students get home safely in groups after nights out." Since when has it been the authorities job to make sure you got home safely? I mean sure, its the job of the police to try and make sure you can walk home without being the victim of a crime but it isn't their job to make sure you can go out and drink as much as you like then hold your hand while you walk back home and hold your hair back while you puke your guts up.
Spending £50k on a campaign to tackle student drinking does feel as if they are somewhat pissing into the wind and the money would be more effectively spent on building a fence and some lighting but the money for the campaign probably comes out of one council department budget while the money for a fence and lighting would come out another. But even so, the student bodies attitude in this whole affair seems to be 'we should be able to do whatever we like and someone else should pick up the pieces' which is an attitude that seems to be becoming ever more prevalent in society. Or am I just becoming a grumpy old b*****d.

I don't see that that is their attitude at all. I don't think anyone in that article suggests that students aren't responsible for their own personal safety. What they do suggest is that the proposed measures are likely to be counterproductive and that practical measures to increase safety along the river would be more sensible and result in fewer unnecessary deaths. A bit of fencing and some lighting hardly seems an unreasonable demand in the circumstances.

Since forever. Rather than waste time and money hanging around outside night clubs giving students fines perhaps they could actually protect people.

The students are correct, I don't really see how treating them differently than the rest of the UK's student population is going to help the matter, they will just resent the police in Durham more than they would have done otherwise. No other student group has to deal with breathalysers outside bars/clubs and if you're caught with alcohol in public, it should be confiscated and a warning dished out like most other places, the police should have more important things to do with their time. Build a fence instead of burning bridges in the community, that should be enough to protect the students from falling in the river.

Also, could someone please fix the title of the thread? It's driving me bananas (irrational, I know).
