The two decisions in our favour that stick most in my mind, would be the early red card at home to Watford which was very harsh, and about 40 seconds into the game. A foul yeah, but a straight red at that point was very excessive. Also, the penalty to make it 3-0 at home to Middlesborough, which was a clear and rather embarrassing dive. At least with the latter of those, the game was probably already won. But it doesn't stop the decision being wrong or the dive being embarrassing. And both of those were big games against direct promotion rivals.
The most incorrect decisions against us that stick in the mind would be away at Brentford when Ryan Fraser should have been given a penalty, and at home to Sheffield Weds when Wilson was taken out with an open goal to tap into. The latter was probably one of the strangest and in hindsight laughable decisions I've ever seen. But then, by that point late in the season, a lot of opposition managers had been vocal about the number of penalties we had won across the season and you have to wonder if that was in Paul Tierney's mind at the time.
Whilst it’s true we were awarded a higher than average amount of penalties, I honestly can’t think of too many of those that were particularly controversial. And we missed several of them!
I would say that we’ve developed a habit of having too many players crowding about a ref when we feel a decision should be made in our favour. I have no problem with a captain doing that, or maybe one/two players – but there is no need for half your team to be shouting at the ref.
Overall, can't complain, the referee is what it is - human and probably not properly equipped to deal with modern football at the pace it’s now played and the ingenuity of players to win fouls.
And I suspect we'll be lucky to get anything remotely 50/50 in our favour next season. Wilson get's taken out in front of the Stretford End or The Kop? Can you imagine it?
