Don't think I've seen a Vale team look so solid defensively, Swindon away next will probably change that. Unfortunately I've also never seen a Vale team look so toothless up front. Looks like we'll have a season of binary football to look forward to, probably finishing much closer to the bottom than the top.

We hit the bar and their keeper made a couple of decent saves, I'd like us to have Hooper on the bench and have the option. As said "goals win games, defences win titles" so if we can build that solid foundation we can then take it over the next season or two and hopefully build a side capable. We've addressed the defensive problem, playing some very good football but still work to be done and looks far more positive for us than expected.

4 of our possible starting 11 out today including main striker. A point will do me.

We had three key players missing too in Neal, Oakey and Streete and now seem to have lost Andoh which changed the game a wee bit.

Forgot to mention Willo... Still same old Willo, didn't get a bad reception to be fair wasn't his fault he kept being picked and wasn't good enough.

I like the look of Gillingham this season, and I reckon they've an outside chance of the playoffs under Edinburgh.

Why hasn't Ehmer been starting though? I noticed a lot of your fans were desperate to sign him following a good loan spell last season. We had him on loan in the 13/14 season and he was very good back then, and I assume he's even better now.

If we have serious ambitions of the playoffs then we need to at least be getting a point off these kind of teams.

Happy with that.

It is strange he's not starting. He is a top class CB and yes, we were all desperate for him to sign.

But John Egan (also class) and Ade Oshilaja (young Cardiff loanee) started the first game and have been outstanding. We seem to have 3 top quality CB's this season. All young and quick and probably in the mould of your own Ryan Innis who was also quality when on loan with us for a short while.

I think there will be times we play 3 CB's as well, in a 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 formation.

Can't see you making the play offs based on yesterday, looked solid down the spine but so weak down the flanks, the two full backs were dreadful and had zero up top (bit like us) MacDonald might help that a bit but it's a very weak division so you never know. You'll be upper mid table though if you lose Dack it would hit you hard.

Gills 10th to 14th. us 12th to 16th. horrendous goal we conceded but still good finish. didn't like Gills one bit. make believe head injury from houghton and then 30 secs later was linford christie. cheat . 6 yellows . nothing else needs be said. that said it was fair result neither keeper really tested. having feared the jinx of an ex player striking Willo was absolutely atrocious ,a performance we became accustomed to. although i swear he had a shot which is unusual. Our defence is solid just a goalkeeping howler prevented the win but after our usual knobbing at Swindon 2 points from 9 is a poor start

According to BBC Website statistics, Port Vale 13 fouls Gillingham 15. Doesn't sound like persistent fouling by one side to me. Appreciate that the bookings were more one sided but did anyone go over the top ?

Yours were cynical fouls everytime we broke forward (one possibly was in the box not outside).

stats always make things different. last week crewe had more possession which was amazing stat. not one foul was OTT or possible red. what they were was a succession of niggles and breaking up play. Dacks card epitomised the game Vale breaking clear from half way , sticks arm out and takes one for the team. basically cynical and niggly but no you are right there was no horror tackles.

Someone actually went to the bother of making that video? Sad bastards.

For the record, there really aren't any bad fouls there. A few soft yellows too, I can see what Edinburgh meant. Vale doing well to surround the ref at every opportunity.

How Edinburgh can moan about the yellows is beyond me! The one on Grant second half looked dangerous but oddly the referee didn't book him. Andoh is quality! Can see Gills playing a few games away from home a man light. Not what you want to see really from teams but complimentary all the same to our improvement.

Our goal was superb! If that's a top side scoring that with the build up play then the accurate ball and chest down everyone would be tugging over it.

If you stop a break away it's a yellow card offence, which of those was harsh?!

Haha it actually looks like Vale players were instructed to play dead if we dared try to tackle them.

Hmm you get one or two sides like it a season come down VP, Steveage did it a couple of seasons ago, Notts County last season (both went down) but that's something you have to rise above and I thought the lads did yesterday compared to the past such as Notts when we lost our heads with it and got beat.

It's so frustrating that we've not picked up at least one win from those first two fixtures, against two sides who'll finish in the bottom half.

Tougher games to come now, but if we carry on playing this way the first win won't take long.

By "every opportunity" to surround the ref. I take it you mean once out of the 4 mins worth of footage? On the one occasion it did happen, Uche complained and Grant pushed him away. I think you and Edinburgh need a trip to the opticians. In the case of Edinburgh though, it's clear he's trying to divert attention away from his players.

There's nothing quite like a bitter Vale fan, I can't even imagine the wrath had we won.

Why is it always 'bitter'? Maybe you can learn to accept that what we're saying is true? It won't hurt you. Honestly.
