For the first time in almost 30 years i am considering packing it all in. The cost of a ticket especially away games is just taking the piss.

So do any match goers think the same, enough is enough? i read somewhere that the average age of match going supporter is now 45 years old.

So doing the maths i expect in 2025 - 2030 there is going to have a complete overhaul of the pricing system or the grounds will be empty.

And yes i know you wouldn't go if you supported Everton to.

I agree that the amount of money you need to pay to watch a football match these days is a joke. I wouldn't of thought that Everton tickets would be that expensive though;)

While the demand is there prices will go up. With corporate etc. now also contirbuting to how much the top clubs make I also can't see them reducing prices even with the huge TV increases.

I'm starting to take my oldest nephew to games now (sister & her bloke have no interest in footy), and whilst I'm in a reasonably fortunate position of being able to afford to go myself (but nowhere near as often as I'd like) I'm having to stick to cup games with him apart from rare occasions. The cost for the league is just too high combined, before you factor in the other things accompanying a match with a kid - drinks, food etc. And that's ignoring membership costs at us say, just for an adult & a child it's £57 a season! You have to pay more than a match ticket for first refusal at getting them! I can't imagine how much it costs a family for a season all told if you make most/every game.

Younger fans around 18-30 in particular are getting priced out just in general (but it's not just football - look at Tory policies towards the younger generation...), and one of the consequences is the atmosphere at Anfield suffers as a result of it being arl men who expect success and who just don't make that same effort they used to.

I'd have hoped our extension would see reductions but I really doubt that. The prices this season reflect it.

As i said if the average age is 45 now, in 10-15 years there will be no one to follow in today's football fans footsteps. Most 25-45 olds in 2025 will have been TV fans from a young age and will not have the match going bug like ourselves.

Things will have to change and the demand will not be there.

It's a shame that 100% of Woodison doesn't have an obscured view given the garbage that is often on show.

In all seriousness, it's a shame that clubs don't offer heavily discounted tickets for those attending games with youngsters. Some may already do, I'm a Darlington fan so I've no idea if Premier League clubs are good with those sorts of things.

I've only been going to one or two games a season for the past 3 or so now as I simply can't afford to go anymore.

Someone's just bought a nice, new armchair.

At United I can pay for a season ticket in a quadrant, which you need binoculars to see, or I have to pay a yearly membership on top of £50 for a ticket. I will occasionally go on my own if the game is tasty enough, but it's shit not being able to have a beer due to driving.

People must think they're getting value for money or they wouldn't keep paying. I never renewed my Daggers ST this season because although it was a relatively minor outlay, I just wasn't enjoying attending the matches so thought better of it.

Since the 90s people have been saying the bubble will burst but it still keeps on inflating. There must be a critical point but it may be much higher than previously thought.

Could I justify £50 to watch a match? Probably for a one off but not every week. I think those that pay must be insane but then I go back to my original point that they must think it worthwhile.

I'm not convinced there will be a tipping point. A price which keeps the profits to their full potential, even if it means not selling out the ground, will maintain until inflation bumps it up again.

I have an idea, it's a bit radical (especially as I live nowhere near the club I support), but how about if you are say for example a Man U fan who lives in Chelmsford, actually watching Chelmsford. No petrol/train expenses and about £40 less to get in.

Hope that helps. :hypo:

The joke for me is that yes club in our league don't need to charge £45 a game because of the money they make from TV deals, yet the fact that they do just inflates ticket prices all down the league structure. It further encourages clubs in the other 3 Football Leagues, who do not have such lucrative TV deals and do rely on match ticket sales, to charge £30 or more. I was paying £28 for League One football a few years back, I'm sure it's probably gone up a quid or two since. Championship is mid £30s.

This issue doesn't just affect the Premier League folks. It's getting ridiculous across the board.

Stoke charged us £25 - massive credit to them for that. Much appreciated I can tell you. Then you have Southampton and Man City charging us £44 FFS.

Away tickets at Dean Court are £33 I believe, £19 for kids. We don't have many match tickets available to home fans it's almost all STs, but my ST was £550 - and it will go up again if we stay up (but it won't reduce if we go down, no it'll be "frozen" if we go down - that's generous...)

I've done 90% of our games for the last 5 or so seasons because it's been such a ridiculous time in my club's history, and I feel lucky to have been able to do that. But I'm going to have to reign it in eventually if it keeps on going the way it is.

I certainly couldn't afford to take a child or anyone with me, I can only afford to pay for myself.

And I refuse to buy much in the way of tat from the shop. Why buy a £45 shirt? That could pay for an actual match instead.

Very fair point this Mark. Tranmere in the fifth tier charge £20. Kids tickets are ten times cheaper which is good, and at that level you'd assume the money will go to directly running the club, but still!

My daughter has a season ticket at MK franchise and, because she's 17, I only pay something stupid like £6 a month. They might represent everything that is wrong about football, but that's very good value whatever way you look at it.

I remember paying less than £5 a match through the turnstyles back in the 80s at Anfield. Talk about a different world.

That is good value to be fair. Do you think grounds will always be full? or like me think there will be a point around 10 - 15 years time where it will start to dip and prices will have to be reduced.
I have highlighted the fact that young fans are simply not being able to attend and turning into TV fans from teenagers......even my own.

apologies for serious debate.

At the moment for every working class fan priced out of attending, there is someone with the money and inclination to go, especially with the bigger teams. Also, clubs aren't overly concerned with actual arses on seats, as long as empty seats have been paid for. Look at The Emirates for an example of this. The stadium is often far from full from a visual perspective, but a lot of seats that are empty are season ticket holders that haven't attended which allows them to massage the attendance figures. And Arsenal aren't the only club to do this.

I agree there has to be a tipping point eventually, but we're not there yet.

Pags' point there is backed up by the PL specific requirement on away tickets. Something we've come across this year and didn't realise.

As a smaller club with a mostly local fanbase, sometimes we sell out away allocations and sometimes we don't, depending on distance etc. Turns out that at PL level if an away club requests 3000 tickets from the home club, the away club has to buy 3000 tickets from the home club up front. So then if we only sell 2500 to us punters for our next away match, the club has lost out on a few quid.

In every other league the away club just sells whatever it sells to it's fans and then passes that cash on to the home club.

All about paying for those empty seats! And cash up front as well. It's a clever little scam really.

I've been bored by mainstream football for a few years now, I rarely watch the Premier League or England matches anymore. I refuse to do any away game that is over £30 in price and tbh I think I will sack my season ticket off at the end of this season.

However I do get great pleasure from watching non league football now. For about £7 I can watch good football and stand where ever I want. This is the sort of football I remember growing up with.

Villa tickets are still fairly reasonable but then again they would need to be to keep fans attending Villa Park given our home record over recent seasons. I often just go to cup matches and pay between £10 and £15 per ticket :)

I'm not sure why he does it. He started a thread which could generate some decent discussion and then proceeds to just f**k it up.

I think it was his initial response to your first post that had a lot of us thinking "Nah! Can't be arsed". Johnny's OP was hardly Pulitzer Prize winning stuff anyway.

fwiw, I agree: it really is as simple as "if the demand is there the prices will continue to go up". The arrant nonsense about 'the current age is 45' ignores the fact that this is around the age with the highest disposable income.

Put it this way, late 70's & 80's and early 90's even you would go the game aged 13-19 with all your mates......the same age group now majority sit at home or watch in the pub..........so eventually there has to be a period when the tipping point is reached...........maybe it won't effect the clubs with high numbers of out of town fans but it will effect the others

The match day tickets for all the games at the Vic have been £36 so not too bad and we have filled the empty seats well but wonder if that will be maintained if we start having a poor run.
