Something needs doing. The league has ruined north east football and its barely taken part in pyramid over years, everyone knows that

You can argue that since the league is made up of clubs who foster that attitude that it is the north eastern clubs themselves who have ruined football in the north-east. Not something I'd care to argue too greatly, but there is a point in there - if more clubs took promotion then it would be better for those that do. Right now maps of step 3 and 4 show huge gaps around the far north of England, specifically the north-east with about 2 or 3 clubs, that travel costs really are huge for those teams if they go up.

Not sure how much weight that argument holds for clubs in other leagues who have no ambition to go up, but coupled with the decent prize money in the Vase that they would lose access to by taking promotion it looks like a big financial hit for the best teams there to go up. Maybe one solution would be to up the prize money in the early rounds of the FA Trophy?

I know Cinderford were musing with turning down promotion due to travel costs to the southern prem, but lets be honest their nearest fixture would be Merthyr and the furthest Kings Lynn thats a heck of trip on a tuesday night

Surely more money to be made on trophy than vase even if team dont get past early rounds. I guess its the northern league itself and clubs to blame for lack of progression. The league chairman has never encouraged clubs to progress and has revelled in the leagues vase glory, good crowds and high calibre of players. Also the league joined pyramid years after everyone else and refused to be a feeder to conference

Well if you go out in the first stages of the trophy then obviously there's no money to be made! Don't forget the Northern League has had a team in the final almost every year, that team makes a minimum of £17,000 just appearing in the final let alone the round winnings up until then. You go from being one of the best teams in the Vase to one of the worst in the Trophy.

Can't believe they refused to be a feeder for the conference, which would have put them at step 2 at the time (presumably). That would have been a sensible league structure geographically! It basically gets to the only real way to fix things - a 4th division at step 3.

The more teams who do decide to get promoted over the coming years hopefully the more prestige climbing the ladder will get. Spennymoor finally went for it. Hopefully Bishop get out and show what can be done and set an example for others. Don't think they'll get out this year unfortunately though.

Tadcaster Albion will be up from the NCEL without playing should Handsworth Parramore lose tonight. Otherwise a home win against either Armthorpe Welfare tomorrow night, or Athersley Recreation on Saturday, will be enough regardless of other results.

Handsworth Parramore's game is off tonight due to vandalisation taking place at Pontefract's ground.

Yes, well done Tad - a proper community club. The town has had a tough time. Flooding took out the bridge across the River Wharfe leaving the town split in two. There's now a footbridge connecting the two sides but to drive from one side to the other still entails a detour of several miles. A number of shops in the main street are still closed because they are yet to properly dry out. The ground is situated next to the Wharfe and was under feet of water for several weeks. But last night I heard a lot of comments along the lines of the town having something to cheer about and the club having done something for the town. The power of sport.

Here's a picture I took as the first half sleet shower started to abate...

Yes the league declined the option of bren at step 2 in the 80s probably because the old farts running it did not want to loose best clubs and the league still has the anti promotion stance to this day

Come on Dulwich! It'll soften the blow of our inevitable playoff failure.

It's been an interesting year for the various clubs I follow/watch occasionally...

York City - relegated to Vanarama National League
Sheffield Wednesday - possible Championship play-offs
Brighton and Hove Albion - promotion to Premiership / play-offs
Tadcaster Albion - promoted to the Evo-Stik North Division 1
Harrogate Railway Athletic - relegated to the Northern Counties East League

No mid-table respectability/mediocrity there.

Well, it's going to depend heavily on Jackie McNamara's summer recruitment as most of the squad is out of contract and some of those who are contracted are out of favour. Given what we've seen so far I'm not massively optimistic.
