Some major changes being proposed by the FL, the basic summary...

- 8 more teams in PL/FL set-up (so 92 becomes 100)
- 5 divisions of 20 teams, 38 games a season
- 6 come up from the National League to make up the numbers
- No L2 relegation in 2018-19, 5 division structure to start in 2019/20
- Lots of midweek games scrapped, more on bank holidays etc.
- FL clubs vote at the end of 2016/17, needs 90% (65 clubs) to be approved.

Thoughts?

Surely it hasn't been cancelled? Its increased from 2 relegated to 12 relegated to step 5 with 8 from the conference

What I just read on the Beeb...

'Relegation from the Football League would be scrapped in the 2018-19 season before the restructure for the following season.'

Presumably the current 92 remain, and 8 from the National League join. Hence 5 divisions of 20.

EDIT: Unless I've got this completely wrong

That's how i've read it - 2 teams don't go down - retaining the 92 - the top 2 of the conference to make 94 - and presumably the next 6. Unless they do it basically the top 8 just go up. They would then need to logistically work out what happens down in non-league (but no-one really cares, right?)

Yeah and the fifth will be step 5 which is currently the national league, so they say no relegation but in reality it looks like the bottom half of lge 2 and 8 from the national league will be reformed to be step 5 or in other words relegation for 12 teams from league 2 into the new lge 3 and no promotion for the top half of lge 2 who will remain lge 2 joined by the bottom 8 of lge 1??

Unless they have some other way of restructuring 72 league clubs into 80.

No it's not certain It definately did not say the top 8 just the two promoted plus 6 other teams which makes it sound they could pick them I would imagine a certain two north of the border would be included

I don't back this proposal at all (and I don't think the clubs will either), but looking at the mechanics, surely promotion and relegation won't be compromised in the preceding season? Surely there has to be at least 1 team promoted automatically from each division and a play-off winner (there's too much TV interest for them to get rid of this). But even in that case, there would have to be 6 teams relegated from the Championship - they're not going to vote for that. More realistically, they could reduce it by one club per season as per the 1992 reshuffle?

Some muppet on skysports news, representing the football league, has suggested that the 8 new teams could be premier league B teams. He actually said that last time they were proposed, supporters and clubs were against the idea, but that was a long time ago. ... ... ... It was LAST SEASON FFS.

Can the money men in charge please stop trying to fuck us over. I can't see how anyone who cares about football can be in favour of B teams. Yet these fools have jobs at the top!

Also why get rid of evening matches? I don't see one positive for that? I mean surely the greedy men at the top will get less money too? Aswell as bleeding us dry, and taking away the romance of watching a match under floodlights.

Obviously I'd be against it. Only change if make to the top 4 divisions would be to take it from 92 down to 90 by taking the Premiership down from 20 to 18 to stop them moaning about fixture congestion and therefore treating the FA Cup like shite.

The other 3 leagues are fine at 24 teams and losing 4 home games a season would be shite for clubs like most in League 2.

We don't want B teams, we don't want Rangers and Celtic down here. We want it to stay as it is thanks.

I would only give concession to Rangers or Celtuc joining our leagues if they started right at the bottom just like Newport, Wimbledon, Halifax and everyone else had to. They've won no games in English football therefore they have no right to come in above the whole of non league football. They're nothing here.

So half the teams currently in the fourth tier of English football get demoted to the fifth tier and are supposed to make more money by playing fewer games.

Hmm... I know which way I think my club should be voting

You just know that the money men will dangle some sort of carrot* to make clubs vote for this.

*When I say carrot, I mean like the youth teams - you're fucked if you do, but you're more fucked if you don't

Bear in mind this whole effect slides down the pyramid too. We've just gotten back to step 5, and could be back at step 6 without being relegated. Noooo thank you. None of what they propose is appealing to me.

We must ensure that B teams aren't ever allowed in.

A Mansfield, a Grimsby, a Luton, a Colchester. We all have 1 vote and we are all equally valuable as clubs. That our future could be under threat to assist B teams full of overpriced kids is rubbish.

I also think one way they tried to get round the losing revenue was to have a mini-league in the league cup - given we've been drawn away 3 times out of 3 to championship teams - id certainly appreciate that idea.

I've always been open to the idea of opening the league to more sides (not masses more) and this would allow that to happen - that only 2 go up and go down out of the league (something I argued for when we were both league and non-league) isn't Fair

Hmmm, yeah having thought about it this seems a bit shit. Initially I thought it wasn't so bad, but when you consider the demotion of L2 clubs and National League clubs to Level 6 and 7 etc. it seems unjust punishment.

I set up the original 'Against League 3' campaign and this just pisses me off. It's B teams just dressed up.

I've just fully read the statement.

'Clubs SHOULDN'T be financially worse off'

Okay so in translation, they probably will. I mean in fact of course they will be, clubs are losing out on 4 games worth of revenue.

They list 4 objectives from the FL as to what they want out of the plans. They list 5 from the Premier League.

'At least 6 new clubs to play each season'

Errrrm, isn't that the case anyway?

'Increased sales of season tickets'

Yeah and clubs are either forced to reduce them due to less games or rob the fans by selling a reduced product at the same price.

'Achieve a fixture list where the FA Cup final is played a week after the Premier League season finishes'

What do you mean, like this season perhaps?

'Increasing the prospect of England teams at all levels'

Well unless you're planning on farming them out to us without choice or adding B teams to plug the gap, then how exactly is that going to help?

This is the crux of it. It's an argument that makes no logical sense.

Why don't we just stick 80 names into a hat and draw them out to rework the league. Seems a fairer solution that forcing relegation on certain clubs.

It's just an absolute joke. I wouldn't mind as much but they never consult the supporters, I mean, I don't know, WE ARE THE BLOODY GAME.

Says as much that every proposal they ever put forward is always roundly rejected by all supporters throughout the pyramid.

I don't entirely hate the idea of four 20 team leagues and as someone who struggles to make it to midweek games I can see the appeal of sticking to saturdays. If I was doing it I'd probably look at making it League 2 North and South rather than adding an extra tier.

However, as people have noted above, this stinks of being a back door to Premier League B teams. The quote from the League spokesman is chillingly non-committal:

"Six teams will join the bottom rung, most likely from the National League. “There is a very clear leaning towards respecting the current pyramid,” Harvey said.

He added that while it was for the clubs to decide, the idea of Premier League B-teams joining the league is likely to remain off the agenda"

A clear leaning, likely to remain off the agenda, hmmmmmm!! I'd need far more solid language on that to go anywhere near supporting this proposal.

The Premier League have obviously put a gun to the Football League's head - perhaps removing solidarity payments or a promotion place.

Would also, National League promotion be reduced back to 1 team per season?

Or the FA with the whole increasing England hopes thing. This might be a 'Football League proposal', but like fuck is it their idea.

How will increasing the Football League to 100 teams and making five divisions, increase the chances of the England team?
Just like in the early 1990s - of which Luton Town were founder members.

It very much sounds like it'll be this division which takes the brunt. Whether your club is in League 2 or not during the age of the FL enlightenment, the fact is that half of its clubs will be relegated - another division away from the Championship; another division away from 'doing a Bournemouth' <sic>; and probably one less promotion place too.

In reality it isn't about extending the division, rather more like devaluing and lowering the relevance of 12 of its members.

The suits who dine out on your Tv and admission fees will have been pissed out of their tree on a bender with the likes of frigging Scudamore - determined to make life easier and stronger for the fat cats of the Prem and the Championship. And who will pick up the tab for your club losing revenue from 4 league fixtures?
Well, that'll be you my fat and juicy friend - now pass the Bollinger, the frax gras and the leggy foreign speaking whores. Thanks suckers.
