Never heard of him. Seeing he is an England U-19 coach, hopefully he is not just a yes man.

Strange appointment for me.

SoD was at Bournemouth for 20 years in one capacity or another so we know him pretty well. He is an excellent coach, especially of youngsters, and he promotes an attacking style of play focusing on technical proficiency. Over a long term, he makes average players good, and good players excellent. All good there.

However he hates the press, hates the spotlight, never could handle big ego-ed players, and is in no way a quick fix type of person. He needs to be given a period of years to make a difference, and he basically just wants to be left alone to coach young players. The England U19 job is perfect for him. The Liverpool job being assistant to Rogers seems bizarre. But I'm sure he'll get a good pay-off at some stage though!

It'll be nice for the old school AFCB staff who are left to have a reunion with Sean in August at Anfield.

This seems to indicate he's the right type of person to be working alongside Rodgers. Considering he's now assistant there won't be any real spotlight on him as it'll be Rodgers taking that. It would appear in O'Driscoll & Lijnders we've made two clear improvements in coaching ability & footballing minds alongside Brendan, compared to Pascoe & Marsh.

Good bit of business for Liverpool right there. SOD is vastly underrated. Definite upgrade on Pascoe. It was bizarre that Brenda took Pascoe with him in the first place, he's not very good.

'Never heard of him' shows how far some PL fans venture outside of this shit, foreign, money rammed league.

He's a very good coach - he didn't get it right at City, as the timing was just all wrong, but he's a great man manager, as he proved at many clubs, in particular Bournemouth and Doncaster, but even here he had JET under his spell and got the absolute best out of him, and he also did the same with Baldock.

As Mark said, he's not the most confident bloke you'd ever meet infront of the press, but maybe being assistant manager and going behind the scenes at Liverpool would benefit him and help to develop players at the club.

Good appointment that IMO.

Seems like he likes the similar style of football as Rodgers. Hopefully he also likes to work on the defensive side of a team because Rodgers clearly believes defense cannot be coached.

My feeling towards armchair glory supporters gets less complimentary with every passing day.

We know that. You 'support' Liverpool.

Or perhaps you just 'root' for them from snippets you see on TV.

Some of us manage to know what is going on in football soccer across the divisions and shoe-horn work, travel, education, family, eating, and drinking into the remaining three minutes of each day.

But thanks for equating the remaining divisions in the UK to football in Sudan (you actually have NO idea where that is, do you? It just sounds exotic in the way that 'carbonara' or 'bureau' does): you've neatly stepped from just being a witless ignorant dick to being a figure of wider ridicule.

He always struck me as a bit odd. Before he turned up at Molineux with Doncaster Rovers there was a huge amount of media talk about how he had followed Wolves as a boy. He seemed to be actively encouraging all this and there was a lot of personal stuff about his love of Wolves, which had to have come from him or his family. It must have unsettled his players (although they got a draw IIRC). Same happened when he came with Bristol City.
Same story with Pete Winkelman. Except for them it worked as they left with all three points that day. Prettyboy Bamford scored and goaded the South Bank that day. Ah, memories of other teams' cup finals, eh?

O'Driscoll has been linked with the Wolves job every time it's become available, too. Which has been a lot. The oddness factor continues: why would you take the England U19 role then ditch it just nine months later for an assistant role at Liverpool?

Yes indeed it was known that SoD was a Wolves fan in his time here. He is a dour old fart! Despite being at Bournemouth for 20 odd years, when after retiring as a player he did every non playing job from tea boy to manager (and always worked very bloody hard sometimes without pay) - he never really seemed to have any great affection for the club. It's surprised me that he's never worked in any capacity at Wolves in his career, although to be fair Wolves' periods in the bright lights of the Premiership wouldn't have suited him at all.

To that end, the England job was spot on perfect for him and his strengths, when he took it I thought that was him set for the long term. I just see him as a fish out of water at Liverpool with all those millionaires and their egos to coach. Especially given the average life expectancy of management teams at that level.

Agree. I really thought he was going to be there for decades. Surprised to see him step into a higher profile job.

Keep in mind that this is a bloke who moaned about media intrusion when working for Bournemouth and Doncaster. He doesn't like tinpot local rag and radio with audiences of about 12 people and a dog, I can't wait to see how he gets on with a higher profile! All those appearances on Liverpool TV...Give us a soundbite for the Taiwanese audience Sean...

Ouch! Never heard that before!
I am sure you know everything about all the divisions in UK. You must be very proud. And yeah, I just said Sudanese League (can you let me know if it is even called that?) because I saw a guy walking around with the T-Shirt "I

SUDAN." If I had to guess I would say Asia (again, please enlighten me if I am wrong.)

BTW which division does the club Wolves play in? Or do you just like the animal? Sorry if it is an actual club, maybe I'll learn more about it when it becomes relevant.

P.S. I wouldn't call walking from the bed to the sofa to turn on the TV "travelling."

Too fucking right I am :2thumb:

Shouldn't you be down below in some lower division with the Wigan boys?

good good, now go write another hilariously witty essay that no-one will ever care to read.

Seen Liverpool fans on Twitter go into breakdown at this, O'Driscoll is a good highly rated coach and because they're only interested in the Premier League they've never heard of him so aren't happy about it, instead they want someone who 'knows the club' like the highly qualified coach that is Ian Rush

Being an assistant could be the perfect fit for O Dismal in the days now of managers needing an aura filled personality.
I remember RoversJenny of TFF slating him at any opportunity in league 1 despite Donny unanimously being most peoples team of the season.

Always been a good coach, think the assistant role is just right for him. However, he doesn't like the media at all though, which may prove a problem.

I rate him very highly as a coach, it's often overlooked how good a job he did with us considering any player with even a sniff of ability was sold immediately. He then had to scrap around job centres and non leagues to find free replacements and did so successfully for a number of years.

As Mark says a superb coach, one who our current manager took a lot of his approach to the game from. Very dour and not bothered about the media side but Brendan seems to love the spotlight so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Suprised at so many positive comments on here. Dire for us, down to the way we played football and his whole personality.

Wouldn't wish him on anyone.
