In terms of what? Crap first touch, always takes ages on the ball, not really creative, gives possession away frequently, can't play a through ball, shooting is below par, can't dribble or beat a man. That's why he's spent most of his career as a utility player, he doesn't excell at anything in particular, he's just a decent, hard working player. Bit like Craig Bellamy, but fat. He was a better player when he was 18. Massively over-rated. Also the worst modern era England player as far as tournament performance goes. He really does hold the national team, and his club, back.

I agree but his biggest flaw of late is he thinks he's a hybrid of Scholes and Coutinho. The amount of times a game he attempts dinky flicks and back heels is infuriating.

They are two different types of strikers, Shearer was a classic #9 and Rooney's a #10, he has the quality to be amongst the worlds best but seems to lack the hunger and application.

He's not one to be loved cos of his poor attitude and he's so easy to wind up, whereas Shearer was smart against defenders in the dark arts (shirt pulling and stray elbows).

You could argue he was let down by Ferguson, he had the potential to be world class and had the PL's best manager to nurture him. We would not be having this debate if he developed as a lot us expected him to.

One is retired and fondly remembered as a PL legend, the other is still playing and currently going through a poor run of form. People will generally go with the retired legend.

Shearer was the better goal scorer but Rooney was the better all round player imo, I'd rather have Rooney in my team. If Shearer had more ambition, played with better players and tested himself in the CL regularly etc. that may have been different.

He isn't though. He's absolutely terrible in that role, a big lumbering mess of a number 10. The great playmakers know which pass to play before they even recieve the ball. Ronney takes up to 5 seconds to get control of the fucking ball. Shite number 10, decent striker. Hasn't been one of the worlds top players for about a decade in reality.

Well, Shearer was Euro 96 top scorer where England went out in the semis on pens, scoring against the Netherlands and Germany. He also scored against Argentina and Germany in later tournaments. Those were games that, barring the latter Germany match, England looked a really good team.

We'll always remember Rooney's great games against Croatia and Switzerland, though.

He was content to play in a team where the whole game plan was revolved around him scoring goals, would he have looked as good if he was playing in a great team where he had to sacrifice himself a little to allow other great players to flourish aswell?

He was at Newcastle for 10 years and didn't win a thing with them, that's a damning indictment. Fair enough he did it with Blackburn, but why couldn't he show that wasn't a fluke and do it with a team who apparently saw his peak years.

If you are looking at the player, you should be looking at the individual awards, not the team awards. Shearer has the most goals in the BPL history (nearly 100 more then 2nd placed Andy Cole with 187) with 260 goals, was the first player to score more than 100 goals in the BPL, named in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players, was brought by Newcastle United for a world-record fee (not even in his peak years) 30 goals in only 63 games for England (should've been given a lot more games) won 2 PFA player of the year awards,and scored 283 goals in total. Quite a damn lot of individual achievements.

You could say that Rooney has loads of achievements too, but keep in mind that he has nowhere near the amount of completion Shearer had at the time (Sheringham, Cole, etc etc) .

One player can be the difference between finishing 2nd and 1st, and looking at this thread you'd think Shearer was 100x the player Rooney (a PL great in his own right) ever was, if that was the case I would've expected him to be the difference for Newcastle winning something and finishing 2nd. I have a recollection of an interviewer telling Shearer he'd have won more if he'd gone to Man United instead of Newcastle. His response was along the lines of 'aye, but if I'd have gone there, they would have won more'. Good answer. The way he said it spoke volumes about why he didn't go.

Another noticeable stat is that four of Rooney's tournament goals came in Euro 2004 where he was looking to be the world class striker England could rely on to score goals for a number of years. 11 years later and two more goals in tournaments, but a number of goals in qualifiers/friendlies when England play teams such as San Marino, then there's no argument that he hasn't been a disappointment for his country.

Shearer in his prime every day and twice on Friday Saturday. Strikers are on the pitch to score goals, and he was simply better at it. Rooney has more to his game though.

Prime Shearer at Blackburn was a phenomenon and I don't think his PL goal record will ever be beaten or be close to being beaten. It would basically need someone to score 25+ goals a season for 10 straight seasons. He also performed every time in major tournaments for England. Shearer all day long.
