No they did'nt. It was Accrington Stanley that went bust in the 1960's. Bradford were voted out in 1970.
Yep!! i can remember playing those clubs in the old d3 and 4.

I've seen us play Bradford, Southport & Workington in Div 3. Players of note were Jimmy Scoular at Bradford Eric Redrobe at Southport & Mike Rogan at Workington. Remember when Bill Shankly was manager at Workington.
you must be really old if you remember him as the Workington Manager - he left them in November 1955

Jimmy scoular actually managed us in the 70s after he left cardiff city first thing he did was change our colours to blue and white stripes,.....He did;nt last long.

Fortunately he only lasted half a season or so. We used that sky blue and white striped kit as a change strip about ten years or so ago but a blue kit was never going to work in Newport!

Actually I am. Did'nt start going to football until 1958/59 season -- But do remember the fact he was at Workington.

as you've been around for a while could you enlighten us all as to whether Hellogregory was doom and gloom back in the 1974/5 season when Carlisle went top of the old 1st division?

Was gonna say just google it yourself, but then remembered the original TFF shut down about 10 years ago

The National league play off final is not until the 20th June, so who ever goes up will be cream crackered when League Two restarts.
It's at Ashton Gate too, might pop along

Looks like it’s must win territory for Torquay tomorrow after Sutton’s win today. Anything less and I think Sutton will be joining us next season.

it's must win for both Stockport and Torquay;- and IF Stockport lose they could end up missing out on 2nd/3rd which would put them away in the play off semi-finals should they get that far.
I can see a fair few bookings in the Stockport v Torquay match... biggest match for either team in a lot of years.

Sutton will be shitting themselves. Dangerously close to having to pay to rip up their trampoline. Expect they’ll chuck in an ‘unfortunate’ performance against Hartlepool next week.

Never watched him play but Jimmy Scoular was apparently a popular and very good player.
There was a football annual that was published under his name.
But he didn't do too well as a manager.
My memory of those days was when player-manager of Bradford PA he was sent off during a game.
In those day players who were sent off did not receive any wages for the period they were banned.
The FA found out that he was being paid and started an investigation.
Immediately Scoular resigned as a player and said he was only getting paid as a manager.
The FA accepted his explanation.

IF Torquay fail to beat Stockport today, Sutton could afford to lose to Hartlepool and still win the league, particularly as their last game is at bottom of the table Barnet.
Harrogate had to rip up their pitch last season and did so.
Bromley who are outside of the play off's on goal difference also have a "plastic" pitch and would rip theirs up too if promoted.

just so you know - under the National League rules any team that gets promotion to the EFL - but doesn't rip up their artificial pitch and therefore doesn't go up will automatically get relegated to either National League North or South.

Another brilliant rule from the conference

As you mention harrogate did and played at doncaster’s ground while they got it ready.

Given advancements now in technology i have no issues with 4g pitches

So it looks like artificial pitches in the conference have a distinct advantage for teams, with Harrogate last season and Bromley and Sutton this.

Is it because of away teams unfamiliarity with the surface and/or perhaps the extra money for players because of hiring out the pitch.

Not really - a lot of teams train on 3G or 4G pitches these days. We won at Bromley last season, Drew at Sutton (we were 2-0 up) and our match at Harrogate fell foul of covid.
Passing teams do ok on them, but teams of 6' brick shitthouses that kick lumps out of the opposition do struggle on them.

My old man, rest his soul, hated Jimmy Scoular with a passion. He was a big York City fan and he reckoned that if it wasn’t for Scoular kicking lumps out of anyone who moved, York would have won their FA Cup semi final v Newcastle in 1955. He had the consolation of me being born that year instead!

Do they? We rarely use it from what I gather.

1-0 to Stockport at present (v Torquay) - IF it ends like that Sutton need 1 win or maybe even 2 draws from the last 2 games

Harrogate had/have the ambition to be a football league club. Can’t say the same for Sutton, although I suppose things may have changed since Doswell left. Just wouldn’t be surprised if they encounter some unfortunate results in the last couple of games.

they did always seam to just miss the play offs when he was there by faltering - but if they are X points clear going into the last 2 games surely you have to want it?

Massive goal for Torquay there to take the lead though they did their best to miss it.

Credit where it’s due both teams have looked pretty good. Either of them would present a challenge in this league next season.

Time for Whitfield to win it for Torquay.

Stockport would be more of a challenge I think - bankrolled and decent fan numbers

Torquay have been very reminiscent of us under Johnson.

If they carried that on, they'd struggle in League 2.
