What's this I've been seeing about David James this evening? Doomed to failure if he's appointed.
He wouldn't be my first choice by any means. I do wonder whether goalkeepers in general have the tactical nous.

Swindon, Cambridge, Chesterfield and now Luton that Wilder has been favourite for. I'm not worried
I wouldn't be either - bit I would be concerned why Wilder is being linked to so many managerial positions?
Is his agent touting him around?

Because he's doing well, his agent has actually denied a couple of them saying he's not going anywhere.

I think Luton didn't think this through before sacking Still. Sure, he had to go,but surely the bod must have had someone in mind before sacking him, or else what's the point? When we sacked RM, we only had little Basingstoke in the cup coming up and SD was in place before the next league game took place, although he only had a day to prepare for the trip to Oxford.

Luton have already played two league games without a manager in place, and to me this smacks of amateurism.

I wouldn't say amateurism. Although we needed a change, no one knew who would be able to do a better job than John - I still don't. The players let him down badly.

Three league games without a manager. Maybe they wanted to give Awford a chance to prove himself, or maybe they just didn't want to disrespect Still by advertising his job around while he was still in the post. Or it may have been a case of Still having a large say in him stepping down as he had run out of ideas, who knows?

It isn't ideal for sure, although the season is already practically a write off so there's not too much time pressure.

The thing is Vanni, that we had in the club someone who has had experience at managing at this level, even if the general opinion is that he wasn't very good at it. Given the absolutely dire situation that John Still had left us on the field, that seemed a reasonable move to me. The football is still dross, but on paper we have gained four points from three games, which is actually an improvement on recent form.

As for all of the other comments, no-one knows for a fact who applied, who the final three are, and are just reposting rumours.

The bookies can be ignored, someone putting a fiver on anyone is going to push them way up in the betting. It seems that the bookies actually listed a fan at one stage, who had either put money on himself or got someone else to do it on his behalf!

You beat me to it. An infamous troll from Luton Outlaws managed to get his name on the betting at 33/1! I think its fair to say anything the bookies put out is with no knowledge whatsoever - just complete guesswork.

He would have been odds on if he had put a tenner on?

Disagree hugely Vanni. There is no way the board would go around touting for a new manage while John was still in place. That would be hugely disrespectful to him and not the way he club should be doing things in my opinion given what he did for us. That's what would be amateurish in my opinion and incredibly poor form also.

The season was basically a right off and we had Awford here who has managed at this level previously (albeit with mixed results) so I think rightly the board feel they have a bit of time to get the right person in.

If Slade got the job at Luton (Why he'd drop down here I don't know though) he'd turn them around, he'll need at least one full season in charge but with time he is capable of building a decent side.

Whether or not he would finally get a promotion though is another question!

Daily Mail reporting that David James is nailed on for the job, meaning he obviously wont get it.

I don't think anyone is nailed on. James took training yesterday, but he's been helping out for a while.

Unsurprisingly, Still gone back to Dagenham

Interestingly I think the two managerial appointments from Daggers and Yeovil say a lot about both team's ambitions to get out of the relegation zone.

Terry Burton has left the assistant managers position at Reading for a 'new project' just 14 days after being appointed.

What a leftfield appointment that would be, pretty risky no? The last job to go on was Wimbledon in 2002! Was praised for his style of football and popular with the fans, yet he was sacked after criticising the move to Milton Keynes. That's how long ago his last managerial job was

Unless he's part of a bigger thing? Someone as 'head coach' or whatever..

Someone hypothesised that he would be a "Director of Football" type role whilst David James was the head coach, which would make more sense than Burton just being the manager given his more recent roles at previous clubs.

Still pretty skeptical that anyone actually has a clue what is going on though.

Just to underline the fact that nobody knows what is happening with this - Nathan Jones (current Brighton first team coach) is now the massive favourite for it seemingly out of nowhere. Hadnt that even heard his name linked with it before today.

Bit of a nightmare.

I think Jones would be a far, far better appointment than James though. At least he's worked in the game for a while now.

Agreed.

Hadnt really heard of Jones before (despite the fact we actually paid 10grand for him as a player! Didnt play a game for us though in my defence!), but he is the sort of appointment I was looking for, in terms of being a younger coach who has worked at a decent level for a while now to bring something different. Probably the route James should go down if he wants to manage at some point.

To be honest though it seems like a new favourite everyday at the moment, so no telling if it will be him or not!

Bookies seem pretty sure of it, SkyBet have actually closed the betting now. That's as out of left-field as it gets if true!

Should be interesting though, reasonable coaching experience and played abroad so hopefully brings some new and different ideas to the table than hoofing it ten yards over Mackail-Smith's head.

Reckon David James is still going to be involved somewhere, assistant or coach or something. He was at the reserves game yesterday and allegedly has been involved with the training sessions recently which would seem an odd coincidence if he isn't in the frame for some kind of job. Hopefully we purge the existing backroom staff when the new guy comes in anyway.

That Jones looks like quite an exciting appointment for Luton. Highly regarded, and the chance to be at an ambitious big club for a long time if he succeeds.

Have you written this season off now or do you think you can still charge to the playoffs?

Write off as far as I am concerned, squad needs (another) complete overhaul as it is badly lacking in the basic mentality needed for a promotion push.

disagree...getting rid of still, then biding our time to find a suitable replacement to resuscitate a 2nd half of the season dash to the play-offs, which is within reach ,shows sweety is in control.
just need to get the right bricks in the right holes on the pitch.

Write off. Whoever it is would need a near miracle and hit the ground running with a ten game unbeaten/winning streak to just get in contention. Don't think we should burden the new man with a higher expectation other than signs of a brighter future, better attitude and playing style.
