Marco Da Silva looked up at the thousands of fans gathered for a huge sporting event. Although he’d often imagined himself roaring around the track and through the checkered flag, he had never driven in a major race before.

Marco gulped and waited for his cue. “Okay you’re on!” shouted one of his crew. Marco could feel the vibration of the engine and sped out in front of the crowd. Deep in concentration, he was well aware that a slip could send him crashing through the boards. For nearly a quarter of an hour he drove, always pushing his machine to the limit. However, in spite of what Marco considered superb driving, the crowd paid little attention to his performance. Why not?

The early citizens of the Isle of Madeupey were a somewhat conservative group who established the Island’s laws. One of the first laws passed was that all men were to be clean-shaven, and, furthermore, no man was allowed to shave himself. To make matters more difficult, bylaws stated that men could only be shaved by a licensed barber, and that only one person on the Isle at a time could hold a barber licence. Currently, this licence was held by a former cab driver.

Strangely enough, everything seemed to work just fine and then one day a wealthy lawyer arrived on the Isle and felt he simply had to ask the overlooked question, “If no man is allowed to shave himself, who then shaves the barber?” How did the Madeupers get around this?
