Three people who happen to be Muslim shot dead for unspecified reasons by a man who happens to be an atheist in a crime where no motive has yet been established

Bit of a weird thread tbh

Weird how the media aren't jumping to conclusions when it's a white atheist.

A man who reveres a load of people who preach violence against and intolerance towards Muslims murders three Muslim students in his town.

Hard to believe this guy's religion wasn't a factor.

Is it not time to tap the phones, emails, letters and internet of every non-atheist? And search their bins. Like millions of other people, I'm heartily fed up with these ...um... non-religious extremists.

Reveres who?

And atheism isn't a religion.

That's good old fasioned american racism. The country probably distrusts atheists almost as much as muslims.

I was in Chapel Hill for a fair bit this Summer. It's a leafy, relatively progressive, mostly residential, student town at the arse-end of Durham. The commercial areas consist of two or three blocks, unified by a main street that is no longer than half a mile. Politics are divided but mild by national standards. In fact, modern-day North Carolina is politically analagous to states like Wisconsin or New Hampshire. The site of the famous Greensboro sit-ins (and, a couple decades after, rather more infamously, massacre) is only a few miles up the road, but the post-war generation are mild-mannered pragmatic. It isn't Virginia or some bumblefuck, git er dun parochial shithole. Speaking to a few of my friends who are still over there, everyone on campus is really shaken up about it. People want to help, but understandably details are still scarce at this stage.

More so possibly. It's technically illegal for atheists to hold public office in several states, and there are no openly atheist people in government because it's so disapproved of. So, no. This isn't some establishment protection of atheism.

I'm currently reading The God Delusion. Been enjoying it so far even if it is a bit condescending.

If atheism isn't a religion, why are there atheist churches?

It's not a religion because religion is by definition the belief in a supernatural being.

At least that article above isn't afraid to point out that this atheist church is a business, much like every other religion.

I only found about these shootings through Twitter this morning, double standards from the media not reporting what could be construed as a terrorist attack (although unlikely as this bloke seems to be a lone wolf) and further demonstrates 'white privilege'.

Shouldn't it be anti-theist mega thread? Atheism isn't an ideology, it's an absence of a particular type of one.

I haven't read it and quite like Dawkins views for the most part, but he does sledgehammer opposite opinions occasionally making him a very abrasive figure.

Americans shoot Americans all the time. People are comparing it to the Charlie Hebdo killings but that's nonsense. That was a targeted, planned attack, killing people who have publically 'insulted Islam' and by people shouting about revenge for Allah and, nominally at least, in the name of the ideology of their religion. There is no atheist ideology. Just people who don't happen to believe in God.

Did the video of Dawkins reading out hate mail get done on here?

Weird how the media aren't jumping to conclusions when it's a white atheist.

Everyone jumps to conclusions to be fair. I remember when that elderly Muslim guy got murdered close to the mosque that had "devices" placed outside it, and everyone on TFF said that it was obviously an EDL member as they were operating in the area... then it turned out to be a random immigrant that did it.

Religious extremists committing acts of terrorism are rarely shy about their motivations so it's usually less about the media "jumping to conclusions", and more that there's pretty damning evidence to suggest that an act of religiously motivated terrorism has been committed.

On the bare facts of the case this simply can't be construed as an act of terrorism.

'Turned out to be a white supremacist' you mean. I'm not sure it's relevant where racists come from unless you're trying to defend English racists.

Atheism is a religion characterised by the belief that Richard Dawkins isn't a racist.

There's a degree of irony to the pro-immigration crowd blaming the EDL for something that turned out to be an immigrant. It was worth poking fun at.

Interesting that you identified him by his ideology though. Will be interesting to see if that standard is maintained in future.

From the BBC

The wife of the man accused of killing three Muslim students said the attack was motivated by parking, not religion.

Karen Hicks said she was "shocked" by the attack but said her husband Craig, 46, had parking disputes with many neighbours, of all religions.

I think, as a people, we've gone wrong somewhere.
