Fuck this game seriously. I'm out. Took me FOUR FUCKING HOURS to navigate Kefka's Tower, and then he kills me in the third round with an absolute bullshit flurry of attacks. I'm done. I'm done! I'll watch the ending cutscenes on Youtube or something.

Easiest 1FF my arse. By far the fucking hardest I've played.

Hahaha! Strange, but I guess your party either isn't at a high enough level or you've gone in without a few key things. Apart from aforementioned boss that has that dick move on the top of the cult tower and being turned into a zombie when I only had Celes in the party, I never really came close to dying in the World of Ruin. Once you teach Ultima to your mages, you've practically won the game. Auto-life is also your friend.

All I can say Jockney, is if you found that difficult, don't go playing any of the previous games! They are so much harder!

Core of my party were early 50s, all had Ultima, Cure 3, Life 2 &3, Meteor, etc. Maybe not high enough of a level, but I really couldn't be fucked grinding. It takes too long and, unlike its successors, it isn't fun. There is no incentive to put the hard work in if it can just as easily be erased by a dick move that you had no way of preparing for. FF8 was hard but at least it gave you warning, however cryptic, and didn't leave you stranded for hours on end.

Moving on from Final Fantasy VI (because I might give myself an aneurysm if I don't), my copy of the Distant Worlds, the orchestral compilation of music from the 1FF series, arrived this morning and it is incredible. As inspired as Nobuo Uematsu's jingles are, to hear them interpreted by a composer and fleshed out with an orchestra is a pretty moving experience. Definitely worth purchasing.

I mean, holy shit, listen to what they did with Fisherman's Horizon from FFVIII

I used to bum Final Fantasy games but I don't play computer games that often these days. I think 8 is actually my favourite but there is very little in it between 7, 8, 9 and 10 for me.

I bought FF13 but couldn't get into it as the battle system bored me to death and I completed 12 but I didn't think it was particularly great either.

I only really like turn-based RPG's. Lost Odyssey is probably my favourite modern-ish RPG.

Out of the 1FF series I think i've completed; 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10-2, 12, Tactics, Tactics Advance & Crisis Core.

The NES/ SNES ones I completed on the Gameboy Advance and FF3 on the DS, while CC and Tactics were on the PSP.

Kefka's Tower is ridiculous if you're not insanely strong and have learned the best spells and blitz techniques before attempting it.

It's not as hard as the later dungeons in FF4 though from what I can remember.

Still my two favourites after the Playstation ones though, great games.

It's so misleading, though. The difficulty curve is almost horizontal but then it spikes without warning and goes back to being horizontal again. Case in point: I breezed past the first two forms of Kefka but then he wiped me out out of nowhere. How do you prepare for that? Add in the lack of save points and it makes for a really frustrating experience. Like FF8 is a hard game but it always steels you for the challenges ahead. It gets incrementally harder so you constantly have to improve your characters and work on your tactics. Six doesn't do any of that. The fights are so frequent and mild that most of the time I was watching Community on netflix, just mashing the X button until the fights were over.

I'm pretty sure I was killed in the same way, and it was a few weeks before I gave it another crack.

I might do the same once I've calmed down. It's the first game that has ever made me switch off the power button on my console in anger, which is some feat after nearly twenty years of gaming.

Those levels seem easily high enough to me. Spells seem sufficient too, so I'm not sure... The only thing I can think of is that I played my version on the GBA and there could be differences in difficulty? I've not read anything to suggest that, though.

What did you think of the characters/story Jockney? Interested to hear your view.

On the subject of Distant Worlds, I've been lucky enough to see two different concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and they are a bit special. There's another one coming along later in the year, I think. So snag a ticket if you can, you will not regret it!

And my fantiverse list:

1) FF7
2) FFX
3) FF9
4) FF8
5) FF12
6) FF6
7) FF4
8) FF13
9) FF5
10) FF3
11) FF1
12) FFX-2
13) FF2

Think I just got sloppy. He requires a tactical approach and I hadn't had the patience to use tactics up to that point, because I was able to get by just Ultima-ing everyone to death. He has this attack that hits your party for most of their health (think it might be Flare or a variant there of) and then he almost immediately hits you with another attack that repeatedly hits across your party for moderate damage, which killed me off. Tried it a second time with the WAIT option turned on and the same thing happened.

I liked the story but I think I appreciated it more than I enjoyed it. It obviously heavily influenced VII (planet being torn apart and the aftermath) and IX (the relationship the characters have to each other, each character having their own arc, etc) but honestly it almost felt like a patchwork of all the 32-bit FFs. Matt Groening once said that if you took every Citizen Kane reference or homage from the Simpsons and edited them all together, you could recreate the movie in its entirety. That's how VI feels to me. It must have been a hell of an experience way back in 1994, but in the ensuing decades it spawned a slew of imitators (many good) so it didn't really blow me away.

I'd love to go to one of the concerts but none of my friends have played the 1FF games, so I'd be on my own. Maybe I could get a girlfriend and force all my interests on her, then we could go together? That's my Final Fantasy, hyuk, hyuk, hyuk.

No but seriously, I'd probably marry a woman who likes 1FF as much as I do.

Big fan then? I had it on the PSP and although the storyline was great I couldn't get into it as much as a traditional 1FF game.

It's my favourite of the lot

Got me into a whole other genre of RPG too with Strategy/Tactic based ones.

Did you ever play the Fire Emblem games on the GBA? They were very decent.

I remember a strategy RPG on the PS2 as well called Disgaea which was very weird and Japanese-y but addictive.

Kinda gutted that by far my fave character in the game (Jecht) was in it so little.

Can't believe everyone sucks off FF8's Eyes on Me, when Melodies of Life is quite clearly the more emosh song.

No Cloud, no Squall shall hinder us, yo.

Auron is possibly the greatest 1FF character ever.

Is FFX-2 worth playing or is it shite?
Also which should I invest time into next, FF5 or FF6?

It's a bit girly (an all-female cast helps) but it's still good imo, worth playing if you enjoyed 10.

5 & 6 are both great, as is 4. I think I enjoyed 6 the most though.

FFX-2's gameplay isn't too bad but nothing astonishing. The storyline is fucking terrible and cheesy though. A proper cash-in effort more than anything.

13 isn't that bad really, but it's not great either. 12 is far better (I know I'm in the minority here...)

I liked 12 but it doesn't even come close to 10 or the PSone games.

13 had my favourite 'final dungeon' area of those that I've finished, Orphans cradle.
13-2 was actually really good I just never got round to finishing it, I didn't bother with Lightning Returns.
