I mean deciding not to get a fee for him last summer turned out okay in the end.

Surely you’d preferably wanted a contract extension with a promise to sell in the summer.

Obviously, but life isn’t always perfect. We decided not to sell him last summer and probably lose him on a free because we thought we could get promoted, it worked out.

Fair enough but what do you think potentially he was worth for a fee? I imagine big sum for a club the size of County.

I get it though, same happened to us with Matt Green who signed for Birmingham on a free after we won the conference, found it frustrating.

We sold Cal Roberts to Aberdeen for £150k last summer and both were seen as on a similar level at that point (RR went to another one the year just gone), so something around that probably. Decent fee but small fry compared to what promotion is worth, so a calculated gamble that paid off I guess.

It’s a big loss, but we’ve kind of lucked out in having already landed a replacement who, if anything, is much more of a proven performer in the league for the short-term.

We lost Kyle Wootton last season as well. The owners have done their level best to take us up and sacrificed the transfer fees to get us here .

Who other than Ironside and Sterry have Doncaster signed that would indicate going for it?

Ironside I would've liked us to go for, good signing. Sterry should be decent but has never done anything of note above mid table L2.

(Genuine Q btw - I've just seen lots of numbers coming in at Donny. )

You don’t need swathes of brilliant players in L2. You need a manager who knows what he’s doing and a squad of committed players who know their jobs.

See Cobblers and Stevenage.

Doncaster's looks a good and very early transfer window but I wouldn't say it is Going For It material at this moment.

Again this most definitely does not make it a bad window.

They aren’t McGoldrick esq signings but they are all hard working players that will fit how McCann likes to play.
Lawlor - Jury out he was pants the last time we had him.

Sterry - good solid right back

Wood - ignore his age, he was still fitter than most of the youngsters at Rotherham last season and played in over half of their Championship games, a leader and organiser that we desperately need.

Senior - another Captain and leader

Bailey - a defensive midfielder we haven’t had and desperately needed, has good pedigree and another leader

Broadbent - another hard working high energy midfielder box to box supposed to be like Paul Green, if half as good he will do for me

Ironside - a known quantity that most in L2 would have taken.

I agree on paper it hardly screams going for it however the one thing I will say is that each and every team will know they’ve played us next season as it will be a constant high tempo press from minute one to the final whistle. There won’t be a fitter team than us next season.

Donny are putting together a strong league 2 squad, another team that will be finishing above us next season!

Yeah it certainly wasn't a dig.

You remind me of us last season where you need a massive overhaul and getting the right characters in.

Can we please be demoted from Kitchen sink? We’ve signed one lad bless him who Hartlepool sent back from a loan spell in January and been outdone on at least two signings so far.

As football fans we can often fall into the trap of “if we haven’t heard of the player before they must be no good”. Jack Senior won a trophy last year at Halifax. That trophy could have been won by Wrexham and North County. Broadbent was part of a team that were so close to beating Notts County and making the play off final. Fans of both these clubs have said how big a miss they will be next season. Richard Wood’s reading of the game will sort our defence out and we will be 10x harder to beat. Jamie Sterry will thrive in a better team and teaming up with Luke Molyneux again on our right hand side. Joe Ironside is exactly what our forward line needed last season. As has already been said, McCann is putting together a squad of players with character. Something that we have lacked for 3 years.

I hope we continued to be overlooked though

Fair play to you on managing to find some Boreham Wood fans.

Doesn’t matter who you, or any other club, sign. It’s all down to whether they actually perform.

I reckon there’s going to be a shitload of disappointed fans/clubs this season.

It's not "overlooked" it's just not "Going For it" in its definition.

Stevenage, Northampton, Stockport and Carlisle weren't going for it last season but that was 2nd to 5th.

It's all about moulding a team together and creating a unity within it.

I personally have Doncaster for a top 12 finish which would be progress for them.

Banter clubs like Stevenage and Carlisle were expected to finished much lower.

I agree, the three you’ve picked up from the NL all look decent, although odds are one will probably be rubbish. Hopefully that Broadbent who got a nice little lesson in not angering the football gods in the play-off semi.

It’s worth saying that both us and Wrexham actively tried to get knocked out of the FA Trophy as soon as possible though haha.

We've had months of people telling us that as soon as we got to L2 we were going to get hammered by FFP. What's Gillingham deal? Big turnover?

Is it because they are wealthy southerners?

Re. Jack Senior- the thing that always sticks in my head about him is that he always has a terrible haircut.

So far we have signed Masterson and perhaps Jonny Williams, who were both free agents.

The rumour is that we have offered Williams, who was already on a League 2 salary, a 3 year deal to move back to Kent, where he comes from. That is what has probably attracted him.

Our new owner is minted but wants to run a sustainable club. Hence, why we have given new contracts to most of last season's squad

Scally has retained a 25% share so would you pump your own personal money in to a club, just so someone who never invested any of his own money could take advantage of the uplift when he sells his portion?

Bearing that in mind, I cant see us falling foul of FFP issues

On the basis of this post I’m very much enjoying the fact that Bradford put Jonny Williams up in a hotel only for him to sack em off to sign for the mighty Gillingham instead.

I hope it was an expensive one (unlikely in Bradford) and he smashed fuck out of the minibar.
