The First Ever Official ‘GOING FOR IT’ Thread

There are already grumbles. People whose usual match day routines have changed- want us to be playing preseason games against the local teams, can't get juicy gossip from their board member mates etc etc.

Personally I'm all for it, 15 years in that hell hole preceded by a decade of largely crap times and I'm ready for a bit of success. I also don't think this pair are going to leave us in a mire- however long it lasts we will end up in a better position than where we were (no ground, no training ground, no reserve team, no women's team, turnover of around 2-3m and rapidly heading to regional football)

I'd imagine you probably feel much the same as County's trajectory has been similar to ours.
Our trajectory has been similar up to now but I think you're in a world of your own to anyone at our level with the marketing opportunities, the Hollywood owners etc. Your club is on the map in the way many Premier League clubs would be jealous of. It will definitley go one way and there's no chance they'll leave you in the lurch, there's too much scrutiny on them due to their profiles and they seem sound anyway.

As I say, I'm sure the average Wrexham fan will possibly miss some factors of "the old days" and some things will grate but overall it will be better in every way. Especially on the pitch where there won't even be an argument as to the old days merits or lack of them.

Jesus. £20m. On the salary cap protocol that means you can have a yearly wage budget of £11m. I bet there's a couple of bottom end Championship teams that would like that.

And here we were thinking our £8.5m turnover was decent for L2

Yes we really should be going for it with a turnover of £20m, so perhaps we’ll see some big signings in the next few weeks following a total lack of activity so far.

Looking at the two teams in the Championship play-off final, Luton’s turnover was £17m and Coventry’s was £18m - and a large proportion of that would be Championship TV money which we of course don’t get.

Championship TV money is about £6m from what I recall so a fairly large percentage.

Shows just how well the Wrexham owners are doing.

(Also our £8.5m isn't too shabby comparitively when taking out the TV money and the fact they're two leagues higher).

I can’t see how it can be £20m. Ticket sales can only be c £3-4m, peanuts from the EFL.

Are you saying £15m odd comes from other sources? Like to know what they are.

Sponsorship? Must be worth a lot given exposure. Gillinghamesque cup money - that’s probably at least £10m (using Kent maths).

Anyway you can add us to the going for it thread now we have signed a solid reserve (probably) goalkeeper. Thanks.

It'll be made up of sponsorship, money from Disney for the documentary, merchandising, the US tour. That's the model they've built - they have used their profiles to create a publicity machine which brands (particularly American ones like United Airlines) want to be involved with.

Sponsorship will be the bulk of it I'd imagine, Merchandise and stuff like that to the Americans as well. They love us over there- at the TST thing we did the other week 50% of the 30k who bought tickets to the event identified as Wrexham fans. They all seemed to have shirts too.

It's bonkers frankly.

Judging by our rumoured signings you can downgrade us to 'money tap is off'.
It's the same budget. It was only going up if we got to League One where you get more revenue. 95% of our players from last year are still here as we are today. The remaining 5% will go into the squad. We only released Ryan Johnson, Chris Hussey and Jacob Davenport (who was just a random punt with a few months left) plus Jaros loan return.

We're well in for a decent LCB who will be on first team wages and back up/competition goalkeeper. Maybe a punt in midfield and another body up front to boost the squad if the numbers are right.

If Collar is sold it would be a different story or if Sarcevic or Madden move on, we would have a big gap in the wage bill which we would then be active on replacing.

3 signings in a day, we surge to the top of this list.

What? They’re all non leaguers. And what? We lost a chunk of our better players for more money you say. So?

Pissing this tinpot league I tell you.

Thought there was supposed to be something based on a three-year average? I remember hearing about it being why we didn't go for a big gamble this season

Yeah. Think it’s capped at 55% of turnover on a 3 year rolling average.

Us Gills have spent reportedly 40% the last few years (feels like 5%), so we really can “go for it” now. Especially as decent L1 wage earners have departed in O’Keefe, MacDonald and Reeves plus Mandron back in Jan.

Wrexham clearly have more earning potential than the historic lower league vanity projects where the owner has to single-handedly fund it at a loss. I’d actually expect Reynolds and McElhenney to turn a massive profit once it’s all said and done. The question is more about how long you can sustain interest, you’ll of course get a few weirdos in the US who become diehards and expand the fan base but the majority of the revenue will be sponsorships and that relies on things like the Disney documentary persisting and people staying interested in the Wrexham fairytale and it staying in the public consciousness.

I’ve always maintained it’s just been genius from the two of them from a commercial perspective. The question is always around who is running the football side of things - if I had much more money than everyone else, I would simply invest in the best players and talent - not feel like I need a 40+ year old goalkeeper who only trains once a week or spend 6 figure sums on the likes of Ollie Palmer but…ends justify the means and all that, can’t question their results so far.

Also under SCMP any funds introduced by the owner in the form of equity (not loans) is classed as fortune income and included in turnover.
No cap on losses under SCMP.

In April half of the fanbase were boycotting because of the complete lack of vision the football club have shown over the last 3 seasons. Season ticket holders were staying away and the renewals were at an all time low. It has worked as we did get a change in manager and are now finally seeing some work done by those at the top to get us back to where we were.
Boycotting due to lack of vision is a rather grandiose term for not being arsed to go to a match when you're not playing very well.
Every forum, every form of social media, there are cod heads obsessed with Donny Rovers. You are literally nothing to us. We have a bigger rivalry with Harrogate :)
Every forum? There isn't a single Town fan on here, the other forum or The Fishy who is obsessed with Donny. Neither have I met one in real life. It's good to have a local match but there's no real rivalry there.

Makes perfect sense you'd have a bigger rivalry with Harrogate too. Two Yorkshire clubs with rich and long histories in the basement/non-league divisions, both had money pumped into them in recentish years to elevate them above their natural levels, neither club can fill their stadium, etc.
Fair enough, you never know, but my experience with Notts has been that this kind of signing never works. Once an older player has had a couple of years of not playing regularly it’s really hard to get that back, whatever their quality. Sometimes there’s an exception to the rule though, I guess.
Josh Emmanuel did alright for us last year to be fair.
