I wonder how much they will actually invest in grassroots though?. The clubs can spend it how they like, currently it only works out at around 8 million per club over the last 3 years, it's not nearly enough.

They are getting a 70% increase in TV revenue but I'd be surprised if they invest 70% more into grassroots if they don't it will mean the Premier league is effectively reducing the percentage they give to grassroots. Nice headline but misleading.

Wasn't it 70% increase in TV deal, but only 40% increase in Lower league/grass roots funding? (£700m to £1b).

I'd imagine most of the increase will go straight to Parachute Payments and then only a little will be fed to the rest of the clubs. As I believe that counts towards their money paid towards lower league..

Attention grabbing figure that might not even be that much..

So it looks like the U15 age group will finally be sorted out. The U15's will be taking part in 'Tournament Delle Nazioni' in Italy later in the year and have been invited to take part in the CONCACAF U15 Championship.

The British football needs to evolve (I´m not talking about money)..the best players are not in the Premier league (Messi...Ronaldo..Neymar...Suarez...half Bayern Munich...etc)

Seen this a lot from Welsh supporters. Can't tell if they're joking or not.

Don't think the forum really needs an U19 thread.

England's U20s team will take part at the Mercedes-Benz Elite Cup which will kick-off tomorrow. they will face the Netherlands, turkey and Germany (7th, 10th, 13th)

at the U19 version of this cup Germany met the Us boys earlier today. Jonathan Klinsmann between the posts for the US was having a nightmare. 1:8!
furthermore are mexico and scotland taking part

The pitches in Macedonia for this U19 qualifying group have been an absolute disgrace. Unplayable and an absolute joke that UEFA have allowed games to be played on them.

Why are England playing Finland in a qualifier in Macedonia?

In the U17 and U19 Euros, qualification is done in two rounds of mini tournaments. It's basically just a load of four-team groups, with each group in each round set in the country of one of the teams in the group. Our group contains us, Macedonia, Finland and Italy.

Some moron was sat behind me at Wembley on Friday night who continually shouted for Hodgson to 'bring fooking Vardy on'.

When he eventually did, he stood up and shouted 'too fooking late Hodgson. Get out' and left the ground

Bizarre to say the least

I thought Jamie Carragher was a bit harsh saying its easy to win caps NOW...just being bitter maybe?

Dele Ali is a good young player with a bright future so probably just getting a chance to come into the squad at this stage when the games aren't so important.

Its not like we are calling up a bunch of late 20s/30s year olds just for the sake of it (generally) like Sven did.

I can't believe he's only nineteen too. Watching him a few times this season he just appears to be so calm on the ball.

Hopefully he gets a start tonight, I'm sure he will.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
Not directly related to England, but this is a really good blog about issues in youth development at the richest clubs, Man City and Chelsea in particular. https://youthhawk.wordpress.com/201...dern-english-youth-football-a-deconstruction/

I've only skimmed that, but have two issues from what I gleaned. Firstly, it's a bit 'off' to judge City's youth system right now. It's less than a year old in it's current guise. We don't actually know what it will achieve in the future. He makes a point that Jason Denayer is 'a full Belgian international and not seen as good enough for City', but that's somewhat misleading. He's a full Belgian international in the same way Dele Alli is for England. A promising, young player given a few run-outs so far. He's at Galatasaray, and will be playing in the Champions League this season. He's expected to take over MDM's position next season.

Secondly, it's the thoughts on the Chelsea business model. If City or Chelsea produce a player, he has a couple of loan spells, isn't QUITE good enough for the first team so is sold on for £10m, is that automatically a BAD thing? That player is still out there, still playing for a Premier League club. Anything that raises the overall coaching levels of English players is a good thing, surely?

In of itself - no not a bad thing.

However, when it becomes a systematic business model, where the priority of the exercise isn't to bring players through to the first team, but to sell them to balance books, and everyone from director to coach to player knows this, I don't know. Call me old fashioned or small club minded, but I can't help thinking something is lost along the way there and the coaching / development will never be as fulfilled as it could be if the realistic carrot of "making it" for the contracted parent club existed.

And to say "isn't QUITE good enough" is pushing it, whilst there will be literally a few who are close and don't quite make it. The vast majority are no where near. Of course this is true for any club's youth system when taken as a whole, however by the time most clubs get to the 18-21 bracket, the numbers are far smaller and the focus more targeted on fairly realistic potential only.

I don't think that's ever the only business model.

City spent 50 million on a 20 year old and another four or five million on an 18 year old during the window. They don't have some moral objection to having young English players in the squad. If a player comes through the ranks and in a loan spell or two shows the potential of a Sterling or a Roberts, then why wouldn't they make it into the senior squad. Or even just impressing in the reserves and in friendlies like Iheanacho had.

As long as clubs aren't genuinely hoovering up entire generations (I think City have space for 22 players at each age range) then it's just giving a - hopefully elite - few a top notch coaching facility.

As I've said before on this, ask me again in 10 years. Perhaps sometime in the future they will be making documentaries about the class of 2022

Not really, he's got a point. When Carragher was in contention for an England place he was competing with Terry and Ferdinand, two accomplished world class centre backs proven for club and country, after that the likes of Campbell at the end of his career, King and Woodgate while they were still able to walk at times all top players when compared to the pickings of today. We have no central mids to compare to Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes. Our current fullbacks don't compare to Neville and A.Cole in their pomp. For a fair while Englands side was made up of very high calibre players, which fuelled the disappointment further when they failed to do anything. The players we have now would have struggled to be selected ahead of most of the players that Carragher was competing with and referring to for other areas of the England side.

It's a fair point if what he meant was that we don't have the quality we once did, but it sounded like he was trying to suggest that Hodgson was throwing caps around too casually.

Completely forgot about this thread, Under 21's home to Kazakhstan in the qualifying tonight. Very strange looking table at the moment due to us only playing 1 match and everyone else 3 or 4. (Guessing to do with our involvement in Euro 2015?)

Interesting that, in the UEFA Youth League, Arsenal have won all three of their games while Bayern have lost all three of theirs. Maybe the future isn't bright for Germany? They got lucky with one generation.
