The centre-halves remain a problem. Cahill and Smalling are too alike, slow, not very vocal and neither can even pass wind. John Stones is the first pick in that back four.
Smalling is far from slow and he is the leader in the Manchester United defence, though he looks extremely uncomfortable playing for England especially on the left side of the central partnership - for some odd reason Cahill despite being found out at the world cup, again last night and generally being below average this season gets the captain's armband and his preferred right sided sole, it's just bizarre.

Smalling and Stones seem to have all the tools on paper to combine as a very good pair but Roy hasn't put them together once at any point.

I'm not a fan of all these diamond midfields that people keep posting, there's a lack of width and it feels too much like we're trying to shoehorn players in. I think we're much better off sticking with the 4-3-3 that has worked well in qualifying and did again last night - that's much more similar to the way most of these players play for their clubs and I'd rather we picked players to fit the system than vice versa.

The width comes from the full backs as it did last night for the Vardy's goal.
We played 433 at the last tournament and actually had wide attackers in form and it was still a disaster.

Is that a fact? Last night was Rose's first cap!
Didn't even realise that. Though I don't personally think Bertrand or Cresswell are better than him. I'd be suprised if Hodgson didn't choose him.

Let's hope after last night Roy does not revert to type and against Russia leave all the young exciting players out and play the likes of Milner! I am not the sort of England fan who unfairly rubbishes Rooney, but he is under serious threat for his place in starting 11 now. If I could select squad for Euro 16 now it would be
Hart, Butland, Forster
Clyne, Walker
Rose, Bertrand or Shaw (if fit)
Cahill, Smalling, Stones, Jagielka
Dier, Henderson
Alli, Barkley, Lallana, Sterling, Welbeck, Oxlade-Chamberlain
Rooney, Kane, Vardy, Sturridge,

I suspect whoever is in form between Rose, Bertrand, Baines and Gibbs will get the spot. Cresswell won't get a look in (rightly or wrongly).

Gibbs is surely out of the running he has barely played for Arsenal this year - I think Rose and Baines will go with Rose starting.

Baines? Baines won't get anywhere near this squad. He's not the player he was 2-3 years ago, he can barely get in the Everton side and is 31. Should be Bertrand and Rose. If one of those isn't fit, then Cresswell. But I don't see Baines making this squad anymore, he's long past his best.

Squad will most likely be (injuries aside):

Certainties

Hart, Butland, Forster (3)

Smalling, Cahill, Stones, Walker, Clyne (5)

Henderson, Dier, Barkley, Alli Lallana, Sterling (6)

Rooney, Kane, Sturridge, Vardy, Welbeck (5)

Final 4 spots will come from the following:

2 defenders: Bertrand, Rose, Baines, Shaw, Jones, Jagielka,

2 midfielders/wingers: Walcott, Ox, Milner, Drinkwater, Wilshere, Delph

(or we may go 3 defenders and just 1 more mid/wing, since Welbeck could be categorised as a wing option)

If we get several injuries, the following may also come into contention

Carrick, Townsend, Gibbs, Lingard,

I'd have Milner or Drinkwater or A.N.other more defensive-minded midfielder in there, probably for Ox. With that squad if Henderson or Dier picked up an injury we'd be struggling.

Other than that though it's bang on

Don't think AOC makes this squad. He's injury prone and can't get into the Arsenal team. Just don't see how you can justify selecting him over any other forward that is around the squad at the moment.

Personally, I don't find that it hurts to have 4 DMs in the squad. Gareth Barry anyone? He's had a good season at Everton, he's used to 4-2-3-1 to a 'T' and having an old head can't hurt this young squad.

The Flack come on, Barry!
Thats taking steps backwards!

Drinkwater I would agree with ciderhead. Tuesday night will tell us if he is good enough.
But Alli is that good he can play defensive midfield, wide or as a number 10 as proven with Spurs this season. For me Dier would play with Alli and Barkley with Rooney, Kane and either Lallana or Welbeck.

I think Vardy could make a real impact in games from the bench.

The Ox is a frustrating player but when he has played for hodgson he has done a good job.

P.s never thought I would agree with a City Fan!!!

Also having old heads with previous scars from earlier tournaments doesn't help. This should be a fresh squad with one eye on 2018

Alli has played deeper for Spurs at times but I'd want him where he's at his best: in behind linking up with Kane. And against the very top sides defensively that might leave us a bit exposed, I think for the overall balance of the side we need one workhorse engine-room in there, be that Henderson or Milner or potentially Drinkwater (not convinced he'll be ideal but we'll see how he does on Tues)

Also I'd start with Vardy and have Rooney as the option on the bench, personally.

And are you sure you're a Gashead? You seem to be talking a reasonable amount of sense :dk:

Ha ha! Yes blue blood.
Somebody said to me yesterday that Flint should be playing for England, considering the lack of strength and depth we have in that area how far away is he from that level?

At least we might get a few BBQ's in this summer before we get knocked out! Got my England vs Portugal tickets.

Drinkwaters made more tackles than any other English player. On top of that he has the responsibility of playing in a 2 man mid generally up against 3 and he's never had a problem. Drinkwaters only issue is he doesn't score goals, but that comes from the fact he rarely takes on many shots and looks for better options.
Also using Vardy as a bench option is such a waste, his non stop pressing for 90 minutes is not only great for us offensively but it's incredibly effective defensively as well.

Fair point JimJams Drinkwater will get his chance Tuesday and its up to him to take it like the other young lads have done this season. I would rather take him than Milner or Barry. I guess there might be two/three places between Dier, Henderson, Milner, Carrick, Drinkwater. You can't play Vardy, Rooney and Kane and I will be amazed if they drop Rooney. I prefer Kane to Vardy personally but who ever plays it looks like we have a decent chance.

Outrageous he's not even in the frame, standard big club bias :flint:

Sounds good. He wouldn't be required to get goals in this England side.

I guess my misgivings stem from the fact Kante's been so magnificent alongside him, I wonder how effective he'd be without him? Or is it a case that Kante's performances mean he hasn't got the credit he deserves?

we can't take sturridge other than the fact he's always awful for England, Always. He's made of glass. Can't take the chance of a player breaking down especially when he has a history of playing 3 games then getting injured again.

Giving a crock (regardless of how good he is) a place in the squad is wasteful. Fitness should be treated as the same as club form come selection time.

What team are we expecting against The Netherlands? I'm thinking something like this...

tumblr_o4q54htkLJ1v0knj0o1_540.png

...though Milner could end up in the middle with Drinkwater sitting instead of Dier.
