The US are directly responsible for the war though, because of their actions in Iraq. Furthermore, the historic actions they undertook (going back to the 1960's) can be seen as the root of the whole "The West is evil". What we should be doing, is making closer ties with Iran, a country which looks like it is becoming slowly more moderate, whilst breaking ties with regimes which fund the spread of radical Islam. Iran is no doubt best placed to combat ISIS.
The idea that forging links with a fascist theocracy like Iran is ridiculous. The concept of my enemies enemy is my friend doesn't apply here . Iran despises western secular democracy just as much as Isis.

I read it , it was probably the best thought out and written post I've ever read on a forum even if I disagree with you on Iran .

There were several of us active in the politics forum, though it went quiet every now and then. I had alot of fun connecting with a few members with very, very different views to me. It's all good though think the ones that were active all had a level of understanding.

History though, it must be said, is a very significant bit of info that many people lack in their knowledge. So it then becomes very difficult to get people to understand the context of certain posts.

So now a Japanese hostage has been executed, with another probably to follow.

Is it just me (it probably is) or is this thing going more global with this? It seemed ISIS vs the West before, now they're opening a new front on an Asian country. Yet another worrying development tbh.

isis have achieved more in under two years than al qaeda have in the entirety of their existence. they've formed a de facto state and a competent military, as well as demonstrating an ability to execute attacks from their fifth column overseas. shouldn't come as a surprise they'd expand their targets of opportunity

For historical reasons the Japanese have been reluctant to play an active role on the world stage - militarily, anyway. A little while back Abe advocated the Japanese taking more responsibility and become a 'force for stability in the world' or something similar. Which would obviously involve pursuing interests broadly in line with those of the West.

This move by ISIS seems to be an attempt to scare off anyone thinking of falling in line with the U.S. and Europe on this stuff.

The incredible rise and rapid growth of Isis makes me very suspicious/curious as to who funds them and where their expertise and leadership came from.

They took on and defeated the entire Iraqi army, US training and equipment and all, in a matter of weeks, only pushed back when on their way to Baghdad. The Turkish army don't seem very keen to touch them.

Al Qaeda are a tinpot militia of kids in comparison to Isis' organised and professional army.

It is one of Japan's main foreign policy aims to secure a permanent seat in the security council, hence the increased involvement.

It would appear that ISIS may have changed tactics with regards to hostage taking. It is being reported that instead of demanding $200million for hostage Kenji Goto they want a prisoner swap for Iraqi Sajida al-Rishawi, a female suicide bomber who was detained when her device failed to go off.

Interesting change of tack if this is to become the norm for them.

damn that's a fucking escalation on beheading.
i been reading a lot on the isis presence in libya lately, most people seem unaware of it, but they've been holding a city in the north since late last year. a pretty small city (100k) but still a fucking city like 3 countries and a continent away from their territory. wonder if we'll see isis movements in pakistan/afghanistan or if al qaeda's hold there is too strong

Photos and videos of it are already going around on twitter and other social media. Unfortunately seen one of them, made me feel physically sick.
About a month ago, one news source suggested that the Pilot had been burnt to death then, using his name when telling the story. If so, has IS been leading us on about all its hostages? Are the videos recorded well in advance?

Jordanian TV is saying that it was actually a month ago. It was strange when they wouldn't show him when they were bargaining for prisoners

from what i read isis kill all their hostages same time and just stagger the release of pre-recorded footage. that's what the jordanians were doing too with their claim to want to negotiate. the jordanian intelligence services are pretty good, they weren't totally acquiescing to isis, they were calling their bluff

Its just another incident to say that really now they should be declaring all out war on IS now and just sending troops on the ground.

but make it a mass Coalition.

Problem is while people think its better for UK and co to keep troops out of this, the huge massive negative is the Schools in all areas controlled are currently mind warping millions of children into their beliefs and give it another 5-10 years you will have a massive amount of warped nut-jobs ready and willing to help them......much like happened in the schools in Nazi Germany.

I don't think this is anything like the threat posed by Nazi Germany, in fairness.
