Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
Any ideas on what to do as the news have it all spiral out of control at present.

Is it just media scaremongering or a real problem?

it'll 100% in my view push us out of the EU in a years time, its great news for the likes of UKIP, so if wanting to stay in EU how does this get sorted

The BBC are one of the worst for this. The propaganda garbage they keep spewing out never fails to surprise me.

They're not quite in the Daily Mail category, but they're not far off.

It's a legitimate problem

I don't dispute that, I just don't like the way the BBC are firmly pushing only one side of the story.

At least it seems that way to me.

Surely the BBC should be more impartial?

Well, they're trying not to lose the licence fee or be broken up currently...

I do think the BBC have done a better job of remaining impartial than other sources, however they have been driven by populism.

All I see is them reporting on what's happening. What's the other side of the story?

The EU say we aren't taking enough and are kicking off at us. Whilst we say we already have too many and cant take any more (not even the 5K they're asking us to take). Marriage made in heaven and like Christmas for UKIP.

Politically Dave cant do right here. Take more in = British people kick off even more, strengthens the 'out' campaign. Say no = annoy EU = less likely to negotiate a new deal for us = strengthen the 'out' campaign.

If it were me we'd stop giving money to some of the former colony countries such as India and put it towards strengthening the countries whose people are trying to get into the UK. Only viable option long term Imo is to make people want to stay in their home countries for positive reasons. Easier said than done like.

Migrant covers all bases which tbf is probably appropriate in this situation. The flow to Europe is a mixture of refugees, economic migrants (good ones), economic migrants (not so good ones) and a handful of dangerous individuals.

This debate amuses me, I have right-wing people on my fb petitioning to get the BBC to change 'migrants' to 'illegal immigrants' and left wing people from 'migrants' to 'refugees'. I'm not disagreeing with you mnb but the semantics do amuse me some times and in something that many people would deem a 'small irrelevance', emphasises how perfectly how far divided people are on the issue

Language is important. I think the things are labelled is very important. People have a different emotional reaction to "illegal immigrant drowns" to "child drowns" I would imagine.

Opposing the pedestrianisation of Norwich city centre!!!!
Strange how our attitudes differ from that of Gerrnans. I read a report about Germany's response to the issue and within it was a poll that had been conducted. 70% of Gernans welcomed refugees.

I don't disagree and I'm sure there are arguments that can be made for any label. At the end of the day though they are all people, and we'd do the same in their situation which many forget or choose to deny.

No other country obsesses more about immigrants than the UK, despite us taking and having less than pretty much all other western countries.

We like someone to blame and immigrants are an easy target.

This is also wrong. Countries like Spain and Italy remain overtly racist places. And our net migration figure is 330,000.

Of course there are people suffering as a result of the events in the Middle East and undoubtedly our immigration system has flaws, but I don't think we need to wallow in self-loathing based on erroneous generalisations.

Convincing argument. Well done.
As opposed to your own comprehensive contribution??

Not all these migrants are seeking refuge. Many seek opportunity in Europe. The government has done plenty of upstream work on this.

Just saying "fuck it, let hundreds of thousands come" is not sensible.

This is not quite accurate. The other main targets for migrants in Europe are concerned about the sheer number of them too.

I think we can probably all agree that David Cameron's solution of bringing peace to the Middle East is perhaps optimistic when there's thousands of people locked out of Budapest station.

Alty's default Home Office position again. Nobody is saying fuck it. let hundreds of thousands come, but if Greece can take some in with all the shit they're dealing with why can't we?

No, I'll check them out

I'm not sure how accepting fighting-age male refugees en masse from Syria will be conducive to this civil war being won by the right side, unless it's the maniacs we're planning on letting in. I think the bleeding-heart types need to shake this fantasy 'niceness' will somehow magically yield positive results.
