Well yeah that was kind of my point, the top teams back then were stronger than they are now, the team we had under Buckle would absolutely walk this league now, but the bottom half of the league is a lot stronger. You don't get pub teams like Droylsden anymore. There are very few part time teams now and those that are (Woking, Wealdstone, Alty) are decent sides with a relatively decent fanbase.
Yeah we seemed to time it badly being down there as there were always a few really strong teams each season vying for the top, although then there were always the crap teams who would turn up here with hardly any fans too such as Welling, Telford, and Lincoln City.

Droylsden weren't that bad, remember them giving Oxford a pasting live on Setanta.

everyone was doing that to Oxford though - we did it 1st game after getting promoted from NLN at the start of the 2008/9 season;-

(Tranmere fans - yep that's McNulty scoring the penalty)
(Stockport fans - that's your goalie)
(Walsall fans - the dirty get getting sent off for Oxford is your James Clarke)

Just because you don't seem to be the most stable of Club's.
Nor were Orient, Bristol Rovers, yourselves, Notts County when they went down to the conference same for any club similar in size as us and above mentioned clubs they aren’t going to be in the greatest shape going out the football league but the regionals I can’t see us going there. Three successive relegations doesn’t happen often

If Tranmere Rovers hadn't been taken over by Mark Palios we would have gone the same way as Stockport County or much worse. No doubt on that.

We were stable, just shite unfortunately (thanks to your mate, Tilson!).

Notts County got taken over and got their house in order, albeit late in the summer but also chronically underperformed in their L2 season given their wage budget and transfer fees paid and kept some key players from that squad.

Fair point on three successive relegations- Chesterfield tried their best I think!

EDIT - Just to add, my view on Southend is probably clouded by having Ron Martin at the helm...

For all the stick he gets Ron Martin is not the worst owner in the sense I do feel has a genuine care for the club he just doesn't have enough money. When he is flush for cash he does inject the club with money our squad in L1 was a disaster in the sense they underperformed but they also were paid very well but that then leads to when he is not flush for cash like the past couple of years where the money is dry and we suffer.
We seem more stable now than we did a few months. Tax bills paid and all wages been paid on time for a few months plus an improvement in form though that has now disappeared.

Yesterday gave me every belief we’ll stay up mixed with a sinking feeling that we’re fucked.

We played far far better in the first half but we still look utterly toothless up front. Defensively we looked okay but yet again, every single mistake we make somehow ends up getting punished at the moment. Our new signings all looked good aside from Joe Bunney who i felt had a stinker.

I wouldn’t bet against us staying up but from Stevenage I felt this was now Hursts responsibility and we’ve lost both incredibly softly.

57 points left to play for...

Now to have a nice sip of cold refreshing water and check the League Two scores. Southend and Stevenage surely haven't won...

Come on back. We miss you :bye:
If we do go down and fans being allowed back in, getting on that away terrace at The Shay will be a silver lining for sure!

We're still going down
Cambridge will come down next season and we'll gallop up through the divisions together again early 90s style.

Those were the days, my first game supporting Town was the last home game of that first season we all went up together, a 5-1 win over Wrexham with a Gary Birtles hat trick and I was hooked straight away.
Then the next week my first away game last game of the season at Chesterfield which was an experience with the Chesterfield fans spitting at us through the metal fence. :bl:

I don’t think they use that terrace anymore mate.

it's been confirmed Mike Jones is out for the season with an achilles injury, Tom Beadling out for up to 6 weeks with a groin strain after going off against Cambridge and Matty Platt seeing a specialist for a possible knee ligament injury

Be thankful it was only saliva. Been on the wrong end of coins and darts at Saltergate. The away fans could have paid off Bolton’s debt by the end of that game.

You were just slightly before me in that case. My first was a 1-0 defeat to Bolton the season after (was not impressed) then my second was the Exeter match on the last day which was the one that got me hooked.

Ah bollocks, that must have changed when I was living overseas.

I remember that Exeter game well, us kid’s used to sit on the bar at the front of the Pontoon holding onto the wire fence in front and that day we were squashed together like sardines.
Cocker’s first goal looked about 10 yards offside too couldn’t believe it when the linesman kept his flag down.
Was shitting myself near the end thought when Exeter got it back to 2-1 and then they hit the post afterwards.

One behind the goal? They do if you take enough, we had it last season - think they stick smaller followings in the corner of the seated bit. ;)

My mum was very concerned about crowd safety after Hillsborough, I had a fair few games in the Upper Findus when I first started going. Think it was Spurs in the League Cup the first time I went on a terrace and that was in the corner. I don't really remember anything about the Exeter match itself though, just the scenes at the end. That was what got me.

Grimsby definitely the best travellers in the East Midlands League, but it'll be a closer call down in the fifth tier with Chesterfield and Notts as opposed to you lot and Lincoln (pre-football being invented by the Cowleys of course).

My first proper season watching was 00/01 which I think is probably the season you were on about. I used to stand with my grandad on the terrace down the side of the pitch to the right of the away and it was carnage for about 4 years until they ripped it up and made it seating. Used to love as a kid waiting for us to decide which way we were shooting and following the hoards from behind the goal up to the far end by the away fans if they won the toss and switched us around. Bloody miss that ground.

I only went to one away game that season (Mansfield when they kindly let us have 3 sides) but heard stories of trips to Orient, Brighton, Macc, Hartlepool, Cardiff and others that were incredibly interesting.
