i think everyone in the division is a bit sick of the annual sunderland routine of getting a new manager and narrowly escaping.

aye, was good fun last time we were down there. more football to watch with the added fixtures and it's nice to win some games for a change, though i don't think we were as dominant as the table made out last time. it's a tough league with a lot of capable teams. big summers for both clubs, more so yourselves imo. if we can hang on to mbemba (big future ahead for him), townsend, mitrovic and convince aarons to stay we should do well. excited to see armstrong (hopefully) play some games too.

Definitely, you lot actually have the makings of a decent team, us on the other hand....

Our CEO has resigned over our impending relegation
I don't understand this at all, hasn't he overseen your rise from the low point in League One up to where you are now? Which is still a significantly improved position as a club, despite the likely relegation.

Imagine he either feels that he's failed or he's hit a ceiling.

The 7-year plan vs actual:
1st year: League 1 - promotion [League 1 - promoted]
2nd year: Championship - settle [Championship - promoted]
3rd year: Championship - push on [Premier League - survived]
4th year: Championship - promotion [Premier League - survived]
5th year: Premier League - relegation [Premier League - relegated]
6th year: Championship - promotion [Championship - promoted]
7th year: Premier League - survive & become established [Premier League - relegated]

I guess with two avoidable relegations in three seasons, you can understand why he might feel he's failed. But for me, it's a ridiculous suggestion. When he came in, we were on our knees. In the third tier, £25m debt and future not looking bright. Fast forward to now, we're in a great place financially (no debt, no ridiculous wage bill) and we've enjoyed some unforgettable seasons. Also (satisfyingly) we've done so on merit, not having some rich guy(s) come in pumping in cash and spending more than we earn.

I can buy that maybe he's hit a ceiling but only because he tries to control everything. The thing our board is missing - and has been for a long time - is a football mind. We've got/had great businessmen (hence success on finance side) and fans (helping look out for the best interests of the club) but we've had no-one who really knows and understands football. Decisions on the football side have been hot and cold. I'd like to think someone with a football brain wouldn't have replaced Lambert with Hughton. Or at least they wouldn't have let Hughton dismantle everything instead of building on what he had. Also think they might have addressed the non-existent scouting network, the ineffective recruitment policy and the coaching set-up (can't think of any players that have come in and improved). These are issues that have been prevalent for years, mistakes that haven't been learned from.

Changes are needed, think everyone knows that. But this season has been a collective failure, it's not as simple as replacing any one individual (which is why calls for McNally to leave or Neil to be sacked are stupid). The change I had in mind was adding a proper football person to the board, someone qualified to make footballing decisions, not having the guy who transformed the club's fortunes leave. I like Delia and co but I fear for us because this next appointment is a huge decision, one I have little faith in their ability to make.

Don't know how true it is but several papers have reported that a lot of Newcastle players don't have relegation wage clauses in their contracts.

If so then I can see them doing a QPR whilst they offload a lot of high-earners and try to become sustainable. Even with parachute payments paying Jonjo Shelvey £80k in the Championship doesn't quite add up

Their owner has £3.4 Billion, im sure he will manage.

Ashley will take the hit to get back up again (like last time) because of how much the TV deal is worth to him - look at the last two transfer windows, its pretty clear that Ashley wants the TV money.

Looked good when I saw Chesterfield vs Coventry this season. I wonder if he could of helped you this season?

I fear Newcastle are doomed. Won't come back up anytime soon.

I dunno I think they are in a better state than Villa are and I think they'll do ok next season there and maybe come back the following year.

Newcastle will pay for their massive wage bill next year with all the money they haven't spent for the last 5.

I guess you could say they're paying for not spending any money, but at least they can afford it.

Duno, most people would of said Man U had an easy 4th spot before the west ham game. 1 game later and 0 points gained, changes a lot.
That may have been the case, but so far Sunderland have been defiantly battling against relegation thus far and that defiance will definitely come to fruition if they beat Everton tonight.

Amazing what having a goalscorer can do - and a manager who knows what he is doing in such situations..

I know it's been said but you do have to wonder what if Newcastle had got rid of McClaren just 2 weeks earlier. Their squad is far far too strong to have finished bottom 3.

It will be interesting to see is Sunderland stay on their path of signing 30+ year olds, being shit and sacking their manager. Big Sam is shrewd enough to get them into mid-table next year surely

Is this Newcastle squad the best ever side to be relegated?

I think the West Ham one of 02/03 which got 44(?) points and had Joe Cole (among others) in their squad was better. Besides Newcastle's squad was very unbalanced.

Decent shout for them too. Without the 3 points deducted they got 42 points, the same as WHam in 2002/03.
