I'll be honest, I'm not in it for the animals and I was only slightly moved by the environmental reasons because I subscribe to the notion that not enough people will stop eating meat to make a difference.
Kind of a defeatist attitude isn't it? You are almost certainly right, but it lifts a weight off the conscience not being part of the problem.

I think our only hope against the the crippling environmental impact of agricultural farming (through deforestation, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions) is actually synthesised meat. Once the scientists are able to produce safe, nutritious and affordable meat products in a lab, we will have no need to dedicate millions of acres of land to the unconscionable practice of factory farming.

http://www.fastcoexist.com/3044572/the-325000-lab-grown-hamburger-now-costs-less-than-12

It will take them years to master it and people will need to be convinced to let go of their precious killed animal steak and replace it with an almost identical steak created in a lab using the same type of cells from a living cow, but the potential benefits of it are undeniable. It will be cheaper to produce than farming, it will be healthier because the meat won't be taken from animals who have lived with a terrible diet (less saturated fat and higher protein content), it will save a tonne of land which can then be used to grow crops for human-beings instead of cows (novel idea, right?) and of course you won't be unnaturally breeding and killing off a ridiculous amount of livestock. Cows can become a natural part of the eco-system again instead of a human food factory, which will allow other animals to re-take the land that we just assigned to cows.

I hope that day comes soon, meat is undeniably tasty as fuck, but that's simply not a good enough reason to eat meat whilst the current practices of the farming industry are still in place. I am not even averse to the idea of people hunting and then eating their own meat, it's the farming industry that has allowed people to become detached from the animal that has been slaughtered and the random slab of meat on their plate that they don't even question ever existed as a sentient being. The fucking shit lives they have lived if they are from a factory farming process. If people had to slaughter their own food, then a lot more would turn into vegetarians. For the ones that have the ability to kill animals, that have considered what is going on their plate, I have no issue with these people eating meat. If you couldn't do it, don't let someone else do it for you.

Went off on a bit of a tangential rant there - absolutely do it for the health reasons though, there is so much more evidence to go on a plant based diet than against one. Both nutritionally and ethically.

Vegan Update - Day 1.

Toast with some avocado on and a banana. (was offered a sausage cob and said no)
Flatbread with hummus, carrots and peppers. Handful of walnuts, almonds and brazil nuts.
Sag aloo and vegetable jalfrezi from the local Nepalese place.

easy this.

Cooking will be the issue, the lovely Gurkha people round the corner make superb food but I'm not sure I'll be able to make vegetables taste as nice as they do.

might be a bap down in your shithole but here in the Heart of England it's a cob and it will always remain a cob.

It's a lump of bread, now let's get back to talking fruit and veg and demonising meat eaters.

It's interesting because before I became vegetarian one of the things that put me off was that I felt there were a lot of "Militant Vegans" that constantly hammer anyone for eating meat or using animal products. However when I actually met some on an anti-hunt event they were really great and understanding when really they could of pulled me up on the hypocrisy that I already felt. It was shortly after that I decided to go Veggie.

Since I became vegetarian though I have found a lot of meat eaters that get really defensive because they eat meat and quite often it's them that seem to have the problem with me even though I always say it's a personal choice for me etc. I remember being at a wedding and this guy was obsessed with it, not in a bad way it was amusing but he just kept bringing it up like I was attacking him and he needed to defend himself but I'd already explained that I don't care what he does.

It's a personal choice and you have to do what's right for you. The problem for me was that I always believed because I bought local the animals would be brought up in a certain way and killed in a way that I considered to humane* but the reality is that you can never be certain and there is animal abuse occurring every day.

*Vegi militant hat on - I don't think there is a humane way to kill an animal now other than euthanasia if it's in pain.

Yeah, I pretty much avoid talking about being a vegetarian, especially when dining out because the conversation instantly takes a down turn. I'll answer when asked why I'm eating a plate full of vegetables, but as soon as I do I'm generally entered into a debate against someone on the defensive. People giving excuses why they eat meat to me even though I didn't ask and also criticising my lifestyle choice despite having not researched vegetarianism at all. It's not worth the bother and I don't know how militant vegans have the energy to deal with the shit they get.

I get prodded by people to eat meat constantly when I'm in their company. I don't really see what benefit they get out of it, I can only think that because their views on eating animals are being challenged (even indirectly by me eating in their presence) giving into meat would feel them more secure in their own choice. It might help them justify their actions to themselves, even though I didn't actually challenge them.

It's a fucking killer the first time you take a woman to dinner, because you know the topic is going to come up and it sucks the fun out of any conversation because if she eats meat, she instantly goes on the defensive. I'll openly tell people my views when the debate has been opened by someone else and people are willing to listen, but otherwise, not worth the hassle.

Ive definetly noticed an increase in interest in vegetarian and vegan diets. I offer at least three vegetarian options on the menu with at least one vegan and try and include one vegetarian special.
It's nice to give people a option which isn't stuffed pepper and I reckon I've snaffled a fair few customers with a more flexible approach.

This (and what Natch wrote above it) really resonates with my experience too. I've never tried to convert anyone to vegetarianism but I couldn't tell you how many people have tried to convince me that I should eat meat.

Bit random but can any veggies point me in the direction of some vegetation that can give a smoky flavour? Something similar to a chorizo replacement maybe?

(without the need for burning stuff cos that sounds above my skill and apparatus level)

If you don't want to burn it yourself then you should hang around naughty teenagers that like setting fires in the woods.

Just pilfer what they leave behind.

It often seems to be people who have insecurities about themselves. Those who love "lads banter", liking to infer that eating meat is a manly pursuit and it's slightly effeminate not to want to eat red meat and quaff pints.

Obligatory warning for smoked products in their nature being carcinogenic, and that if you have them just once a week you'll be totes fine.

I love the things, but it's rare. You can get smoked cheeses, and smoked tofu. However the BIG DADDY for me is Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier (Original Schlenkerla Rauchbier), a smoked German beer that costs £3 in shops and £fuckloads in trendy bars over here, and the equivalent of £1.50 over there. It's amazing and its pales and lagers are good too. Found a smoke pale ale in Manchester a month back too but I was too merry to remember its name, another diamond.

Well I'm currently having a 'chorizo' sausage (not really the same as ours but still Smokey) so I'll probably be dying of what ever cancer processed meats cause. Or maybe I wont because I'll die of something else first.

Buh, where did you get this? I've only ever improvised mine out of Linda McCartney sausages plus chilli, oregano and paprika. I'm jelious.
