Les Tragedies Minuscules is so obscure it doesn't even have a Wikipedia page. Isn't tough to guess who voted for it.

Most notable contemporary "adult cartoons" purport to look askance at modern life, to offer sardonic remark on the nuclear family, scabrous commentary on the social mores and societal structures of America profonde, etc. They don't, of course. They are The Brady Bunch and The Waltons painted over with a veneer of snark, hidebound by a patina of loathsome irony and contrived quirk, a peculiarly (and putridly) banal manifestation of Robert Pfaller's concept of interpassivity. The least appalling of them, The Simpsons, does at least exhibit a modicum of wit here and there there. As for the others, American Dad, Family Guy et al... if Godard's dictum held that cinema was "truth 24 times per second" then we may say that these shows are something like botulism 24 times per second.

Les Tragedies Minuscules actually does what those shows pretend to. A series of 10 shorts, blackly tragicomic in tone, quotidian in setting but depicting a world that's cruel, confusing, indifferent. The title derives from Pushkin (I assume), and the episodes exhibit something of that spirit - comedies of manners, inner conflicts, brief, fragmentary vignettes. The art is marvellous, and of a piece with the scripts - post-cubist, distended, distorted, inhabited by an quietly foreboding animism, populated by blundering Groszian grotesques, halfway between Carne and Caligari.

I wonder if there is something to be said about the French being inherently better positioned to map this territory… the all committed lefties/all good livin bourgies dynamic (just ask em!), the tangled relationship to modernity/urbanity. This is a show that speaks to and of those sorts of neuroses.

King of the Hill was much less appalling than the bloody Simpsons - accounting for the concentration of quality that blessed KOTH!

I didn't do a bio for that one because I was afraid I would get the wrong one. If you guys REALLY want a bio for this, let me know and I'll come back to edit it.

The fact that the Flinstones only made 1 list is disgraceful. The Flinstones is the reason we have shows such as The Simpsons.

Didn't vote for The Flintstones, would have made a 20 selection list though, maybe even 10.

Aoi Bungaku was my number 3. As Lib said, it's 6 different Japanese tales told over 12 episodes. It was made by the studio Madhouse, who are probably most notably known in the West for working on Death Note and Ninja Scroll as well as often contributing to Studio Ghibli animations. Each story was made by different writers and animators, so it's a bit false to treat it as one entity. As such, the two final episodes aren't of outstanding quality in my opinion. For me, the strongest parts are the retellings of Osamu Dazai's novel No Longer Human and short story Run, Melos!. The animation in the latter is absolutely superb at times, still looking as fresh as anything being done right now. A highly recommended series for anyone interested in either or both slightly weird and dark anime or more "slice of life" style comics/animation.
