Studied Chavez and Venezuela at University so always had a passing interest in the country - always struck me that the culture of politics in the place since Chavez death has held the place back from being as productive and economically powerful as possible. Strange strange government in the past 8-10 years from what I can gather - but not disimilar to other South American regimes in Columbia/Chile and others

Don't have any at the moment. I'm no expert on politics but I thought it could bring some discussion regarding the topic.

have you travelled round colombia and venezuela at all?

I have. Been a very long time though. Last time I was in Venezuela was before the crisis began. Believe it was at the very beginning of the Chavez' time as president.

Looks like things are really picking up over at the Colombian border with Venezuela. Colombia is now accusing Venezuela of violating airspace and are going to continue protesting.

Could someone at least get us going with a ludicrous, sweeping generalisation that we can then attack, dissect and propose an equally ludicrous alternative sweeping generalisation from a different political perspective, and then argue for three days until we descend into personal insults which are then regretted, but then Chris will jump in and tell us off and we can then get a more sensible discussion going in which it quickly becomes obvious that no-one has the first fucking clue about any of the topic, and then the thread fades into obscurity?

That is the longest sentence I have ever read. Take a bow and award yourself a mark out of 10.

I'm not too up on Venezuela nowadays. I read Bart Jones' biography of Chavez which was an interesting read. I like how he re-nationalised their oil industry and used the revenue to build social programs.

Technically, this is known as the 'HertsWolf-Eberneezer Goode conundrum' in which it becomes increasingly difficult to know which one knows less than the other about any given subject.

It's still better than the aber/ red- ebeneezer conundrum where we just shout at him in the hope he goes away.

Well Venezuela's opposition party have swept to power. I know some Colombians who were predicting civil unrest if the opposition won. So watch closely I guess.

An Argie said this on another forum

I'm not talking about the difference between North America (the U.S. And Canada because mexico is Latin America even though geographically its in the north) I'm talking about the difference between already chaotic and dysfunctional nations on our continent and Venezuela.

Maduro, is a former bus driver and is uneducated and as unfit a president as the world as have ever seen. The largest growing foreign population in Buenos Aires is not Paraguayan or Bolivian- it's Venezuelan now. If you talk to these people they'll tell you, the media is not exaggerating- things are worse there than is being reported. There is no food, there are real shortages of essentials. You can't walk in the street safely at night.

As for the football, huracan's team is lucky to be alive. Obviously, accidents can happen anywhere, but this is no coincidence neither is river's nightmare trip to Varela.

he's an idiot. it's not north america and latin america. it's north america and south america. the cultural distinction is latin america vs anglophone america, and mexico is the former. he's trying to seem smart by quibbling (as i guess i am, shit) but he's doing shit quibbling

What happened to the football team? Also didn't the opposition party get the most votes last election but Maduro is still hanging onto power?

Huracan?

The bus didn't have brakes or something and they didn't work so the bus flipped in Caracas and most of the team was unharmed but Torranzo lost parts of his toes.

Until they get their country under control, Venezuelan teams should be banned from international competition. First off, we had the near death experience with Huracan where Patricio Toranzo lost parts of 3 toes

For river's trip to Varela, they arrived to Maracaibo and the pilots they had hired for their charter didn't even show up. When they finally arrived at the airport, they found it didn't have power. Then, their bus broke down twice on what should have been a 15 minute ride to the hotel.

At the stadium itself, the lockeroom didn't even have hooks or hangers to hang the uniforms of the players. I mean are you serious?!

I'm sorry but this is just too much. First of all, we must take into account the safety of the teams. Venezuela doesn't even have the capacity to feed its own people, let alone have an infrastructure that can guarantee safe transport. I mean and airport with out power? I've never heard of such a thing... Let's also not forget rampant cases of Zika and Dengue

He also said this.
