Men vs Boys.

Outclassed by a totally better team. We're vulnerable in many areas, and with Bryan going off injured (Fuck off McGugan) we look even weaker. Strikers looked isolated, the long ball to Wilbraham was nullified by two decent Centre Halves, which you have to expect in this league, and Kodija didn't have much to feed off. Freeman got marked out of the game, they did a bloody good job on him. Defensively, the first goal was a disappointment, and the 2nd goal was a massive mistake from Fielding. Classic Championship counter attack

The positives: Burns looked decent. That's about it in all honesty.

We're 3 or 4 signings away from a good side still.

I actually thought it was a good challenge by McGugan, got the ball first and certainly didn't intend to cause damage

Think phrases like 'men vs boys' and 'outclassed' are a bit strong but it was pretty comfortable.

Yeah not a bad challenge just a bit unlucky how his leg got trapped underneath him. As I say, looked nasty

Cotterill has said Bryan just took a whack to the side of the knee which sounds more promising

Edit: Actually maybe I've misinterpreted. 'whack on the side and hurt his knee' is the direct quote, so I guess the knee injury could've been a result of the 'whack' elsewhere, ie causing it to twist or something.

Deserved win for Wednesday.

A few positives, played bit of nice stuff in short spells need to do more with it though.

missed Bryan after he went off though, our quality of crossing is much lower.

A niggling thought I had over the summer was that our style of play was just to grind teams down and we'd eventually score as we were just so much better than the opposition, this season were not the better team usually.

not too worried though, I think we can play better than that.

The Men vs Boys was more referring to the physicality in the game.

They were much more physical than us, they had strength in the right areas, and we had players getting shoved off the ball left right and centre.

Just beaten by a better team in all honesty.

Happened to us quite a lot when we came up last season (still happens a lot now, one of the reasons we do badly against Ipswich) but if you keep playing good football you'll adjust to it over time. We didn't do particularly well in our first 10 games last season.

We didn't look confident enough to give Sheff Weds a good game today, but some promising signs.

Won't be too disheartened by it.

I think 3-5-2 may be our downfall this season.

It worked perfectly last season, and you can call it a rash statement off the back of one performance all you like, but I can't see it working. In L1 our wingbacks were getting in behind defences with ease, and when we got caught out, it was a rarity that we got punished. Today, we rarely got in behind, and when we did, it was through the sheer pace of Burns, rather than an excellent piece of passing from our midfield. We'll get exposed in this league playing as expansively as we did last season, there's no way we can have Ayling and Williams overlapping the wingbacks on their respective sides, as we'll get caught short at the back. Today, we got hit on the break once, and they scored. Teams are more clinical, we'll get punished.

I honestly didn't think there was too much in it. Wednesday had brief moments and were good on the break, especially down the right, with Wallace & Hunt, but City weren't exactly under the cosh for large spells.

Also, I know it's only one game but, that Matias for Wednesday looked dogshit. I reckon they might have had their pants down there.

Shows how watching the highlights gives you a completely different perspective. Wednesday looked really good on them.

What's with Cotterill though BCFC fans. He was saying he was having trouble getting players and none were in the pipeline. It can't be your chairman not opening the purse strings, your new stadium is going to be fantastic and Bristol isn't exactly the arse end of the world so why can't he get players?

Cotterill sounded suicidal in his post match interview on the football league show.

Interview last week he complained we'd been quoted £7m for an "English striker" with OTIB jumping to a conclusion of it being some Brentford chap? Either way, we've heard a lot in the last season of how our last Championship spell resulted in us overspending on players who weren't of value. The underlying message since early into the promotion season was "we're not doing that again".

It's only been two years since we were here but the money has jumped up massively and it looks like we expected to spend a lot less than we're being quoted.

It seems this is exactly what it is, SL wasted £40m chasing the prem only for us to be relegated, and doesn't want to be in the same position again so is refusing to pay over the odds for players/to players.

Wow. That was terrible. Worst performance since Sheff Utd away two seasons ago.

The doom and gloom merchants can f**k right off though. Most of our squad are new to this level and yesterday was hopefully a good learning curve for the sort of thing we are up against. We'll bring in a couple more players over the next few weeks, adapt and adjust. There's no reason not to trust SC and KB.

People predicting this team for relegation on the back of one game are idiots quite frankly and no doubt the same people who were predicting a late season collapse last year after we lost to Colchester.

Cotterill's interview on Football League Tonight was the definition of doom and gloom. I was pretty content until I heard that.

I wasn't calling you an idiot by the way Aaron! I was talking about the morons on OTIB.

I didn't see SC's post match interview but I know he's a pretty bad loser and isn't used to losing, so I can't imagine it was great viewing!

The Wednesday
My thoughts :

First off fair play to the City fans that made the trip at those prices 1,184 deserve credit, even the two minibus full of lads who tried to be a bit lairy outside the Leppings Lane End.

On to the game, I thought you were unfortunate to lose the lad Bryan as he seemed a threat, he and Freeman looked lively, wasn't impressed with Flint mind, expected more from him.

You seemed to have the possession in the first period without looking remotely threatening, Westwood had one gimme save to make from Wilbraham, we took a bit of time to settle but could and should have been ahead at half time just Matias and Lopez missed gilt edged chances.

Second half we took control and probed, our patience was rewarded with a simple header from a corner that an unmarked Tom Lees nodded home despite the best efforts of Fielding, you lot tried to get back into it with that Burns header that McGugan cleared and barely thirty seconds later Fielding misjudged a teasing Wallace ball that allowed McGugan to tap home, game set and match.

After that we had chances to extend the scoreline particulary the Matias chance after excellent work by Joao and Kieran Lee although you seemed to have claims for a penalty.

On the whole I felt it was comfortable and ended a 11 year wait for a home win over you.

If you cut out the long balls, which were food and drink for our defence and try and play the passing game you have you'll do ok, not sure Kodjia is the answer, he looked a little lost tbh get another striker in and Agard fit.

All the best.

Meh it was pretty easy for Wednesday. They let us have the ball at times and we just didn't know what to do with it.5 yard pass, 5 yard pass, side to side then a long diagonal ball. Weather we lacked the quality or the confidence to try things is up for debate.

It was disappointing, but I'm not too disheartened. Itll take time. Here's hoping Coterill isn't showing the persona to the players that he is the media. That won't help things.

Decent day, where we saw that this year is going to be a lot tougher.

Totally agree with your review...Looked like men against boys to me. Wednesday were physically much stronger, got swift tackles in when out of possession and made it difficult for City to find any rhythm at all.
Fair play to the Owls...if you continue in a similar vein then good things await this season I reckon.

Haha yeah no worries mate knew it wasn't aimed at me. Usually his post match interviews crack me up when we lose cause he's so angry/such a bad loser. But this wasn't like that it was just pure dejection. Must add his interview on the official YouTube is not as bad.
