With over half the season played how do you feel your teams chances and the chances of others are looking for making the top 7.

My team Tranmere looked to have the squad to do it right from the off but we handicaped ourselves with Mike Jacksons negative Jacko ball at the start of the season. Having risen from midtable to being in the top 7 I can't see us dropping out, the quality and depth of the squad is the best we have had in years.

I have a feeling a Notlob, Mansfield or some other leftfield team will make a late charge and make the top 7 which only leaves 5 other spots in my opinion. From what I have seen this season I would expect FGR, Cheltenham and Salford to be part of the top 7.

Carlisle should make it with their games in hand but they are wobbling and have no breaks left so do they have the squad depth to make it, and Cambridge have points on the board at the moment meaning possibly no place for Newport, Exeter or Morecombe who all seem to have gone off the boil at the wrong time?

Also do fans of the teams previously in the top 7 like Crawley or Orient think they can feature come the end of the season.

It would be interesting as to how other teams fans see their own teams chances and those of the teams around them.

My top 7 would probably be

Tranmere
Salford
FGR
_________
Cheltenham
Carlisle
Cambridge
Mansfield or late challenger

I don’t think we have the depth, we had zero attacking options on the bench on Sunday, whereas Bolton have a huge squad.

I think whatever happens it’s going to be a belting end to the season.

From a Tranmere point of view, we’ve got a brilliant squad and our EFL Trophy run highlights the strength in depth we have. We’ve knocked out the likes of Peterborough and Oxford whilst resting many players. I think with that in mind, and the incredible amount of fixtures still to be played in a short amount of time, we look a good bet for a top 3 position. Had we had the record we have now from the start of the season we’d be well clear at the top.

I can see both Forest Green and Cheltenham finishing in the top 3. Both have great squads and play good football. Was impressed by Cheltenham at Prenton Park and the return leg at their place will be interesting. Similarly we play Forest Green away on the second last weekend of the season which will be a good one!

For the playoffs I can see Salford, Cambridge and Carlisle being there. That said I haven’t been impressed with Salford at all but they’re still there or thereabouts. Carlisle and Cambridge should both have enough.

That leaves one spot and a right old battle between Exeter, Newport, Bolton and Mansfield. If I had to pick one I’d say Exeter but can see Bolton finishing strong and Mansfield look really solid.

I’ll go with:

Forest Green
Tranmere
Cheltenham

Cambridge
Carlisle
Salford
Exeter

Seems to have been the story with Salford all season long. Other than their keeper, I haven't heard much good said about them and they looked like a bog-standard poor fourth tier side when we played them earlier in the season. Yet whenever you turn your back on them, they grab a win or something.

Gonna have a huge fight on our hands to make the top 7 and I would take a playoff position if offered now. Think it's doable but we have to repeat what we did at the beginning of the season where a shaky start and some poor performances from players who hadn't played together before (back then, or hadn't played together much recently as it is now) was turned around into a spate of really good team performances with several MoM performances per game.

Yep completely agree re Salford. We played them away from home with 10 starters missing through covid and managed to salvage a 2-2 draw that we thoroughly deserved. I hope they fade away but think they’ll somehow manage to grind out the results to get them into the top 7

As much as nobody on here wants to admit it, Bolton are looking like that side that shoots up from the lower reaches to snag a playoff spot.

I think Bradford can be added to the list of leftfield challengers for a spot in the top 7

Too many of these potential challengers for anyone to back any particular one. Could be Mansfield.
The equally pertinent question is which of the current top 8 or 9 are gonna fade away?

Newport will be one for me. Terrible since the turn of the year, they didn't show much against us, and scraped past you lot

Given the incredibly poor start under McCall, I would be happy with a high mid-table finish. Some of our fans are getting carried away, and it’s hard not to given our upturn in form.

Since Trueman and Sellars have come in, we’ve looked a completely different side. They’re ten games into their first stint at management and they’re top of the form table (for the last 10 games); so it’ll be interesting to see how this one pans out. We’re 9 points off the play-offs with a game in hand on 7th. We’ve strengthened very well in January and we have key players coming back from injury.

Whatever happens, it’ll be a strong finish from us. Bodes very well for next season.

Our problem is the head start given to everyone else after the disaster under McCall. As Firthy says, we’re top of the form table since the new guys came in and the positive overhaul of the side last month leaves us far stronger for the rest of the season.
If one of the outsiders does make it as we did in 2013 (13th or so with 9 games left), their form would make them strong favourites come the Play Off’s as it would involve a great run on order to get there, aided by the some of the strong squads these sides have, Mansfield, Bolton for example. We won’t be far off but realistically should have too much ground to make up.

Two years ago FGR finished season 5th in table with 74 points.
At the same stage as this season [27 games & 48 points] FGR were 7th in table with 44 points.

I'm ignoring last season which was truncated so impossible to know what would have been final table.
However last season FGR only gained 2 points out of 15 in Feb whereas this February we've already won two games for 6 points.

Looking at those stats and games to play, I'm confident that FGR will be in or very close to auto-promotion.

I think this is where strong squads will come into it more than ever this season, given the amount of games to fit in.

We have a strong looking squad now with plenty of options to rotate a bit, after a very good January window. However, I still think the likes of ourselves, Bolton and Mansfield have too much to do to break into the top 7.

I do think those 3 teams will be very strong from the start next season though.

Squad's looking decent but being able to play a settled team would be better than the mixing and matching we'll have to do. That said, not everyone is back up to match sharpness and we're yet to see a striker hit a real spell of goalscoring form.

Bet365 dont even have Tranmere for top 7 in their odds at mo.
25-1 to win the league, 6-1 to make top 3 and just over evens for top 7, I'll be punting on all of those as that seems ridiculous value. Carlise are still short favourite for the title. Either they know their stuff or these odds are wildly out.

To Win League
Carlisle 5/2
Cheltenham 3/1
FGR 7/2
Salford 7/1
Exeter12/1
Newport 14/1
Cambridge 14/1
Tranmere 25/1

To finish top 3
Carlisle 4/7
Cheltenham /11
FGR 5/6
Salford 2/1
Exeter 5/2
Newport 11/4
Cambridge 3/1
Tranmere 6/1

To finish Top 7
Carlisle 1/10
Cheltenham 1/9
FGR 1/6
Salford 2/5
Exeter 1/2
newport 8/13
Cambridge 4/9
Tranmere 11/10
Morecombe 2/1
Mansfield 11/4
Bolton 7/1
Bradford 8/1

We will finish top half, but not top 7.

Next year though.

Realistically any team in the top 16 can finish the season in the top 7.

Totally agree, 8 pts from last 11 league games tells a story. You need to check out last night's game if you thought we were bad against your lot.

We were the team who were going to blow this league away, but unfortunately Covid and the terrible weather has screwed us over with us missing so many games.

Our momentum has gone and we are now one of the worst teams in the league.

So with us failing the quality of this league just got worse.

There is no sense being confident about where you might end up until at least 38 games have gone. Possibly even as late as the 119th minute of a play off final in our case.

Biggest game of the season for us kicks off in 30 mins time. Evatt gone out and bolstered the squad in January
with some top signings for league 2
Tonight we have our strongest team of the season out against mansfield. Sarcevic and Brockbank are the only two missing bar our 2 long term injuries [politic Edwards]
Time for the talking to stop........we dont win tonight i think thats us in this league again next year.

On paper this team should not get beat tonight but its played on grass be it in patches at Mansfield

Evatt revolution starts tonight

For the automatics, itcould all yet go wrong but reckon there's a fair chance still we'll be up there.
Cheltenham too have to be in with a shot. And Tranmere.

As for the playoffs: Exeter as usual, quite possibly Mansfield if they have another consistently good spell, Cambridge, and it'd be churlish to rule out Carlisle.

Not expecting Salford to keep it up, not for Newport to resume their pre-Xmas form

We are hamstrung by our dinlow of a manager. Got some cracking players but no idea how to use them effectively. Imagine we’ll bumble along to around 13th.

Too early to call who’ll make the automatics though TRFC certainly in contention. Cambridge, Forest Green, Salford, Cheltenham and Carlisle would be the others in my top 7. Notlob and Bradford the most likely to make a late run, though have questions about their management. The Horwich team should be performing better with that squad, while Bradford also have a strong squad, but if they do have a rocky spell, will their relatively inexperienced bosses be able to pull them out of it?
