In previous years, this is one that screams disaster.

The general rule of thumb was that those sides who got out of NL had an NL-experienced manager and a good one at that. That said, I'm looking at the NL line-up this season and aside from three or so (Gary Johnson, Luke Garrard and Dave Challinor stick out), are there really many like that anymore? The Chesterfield manager might end up being decent enough, I don't know too much about him, or Sutton's manager, but in terms of County going out and getting the kind of manager who would historically tick the boxes, it's a pretty small pool now if they wanted to do that.

Perhaps the changes seen in the FL over the last few years have started to filter down here.
Matt Gray played non league football, was an assistant at Eastleigh in this division and had assistant roles at clubs in the lower reaches of League 2. He knows what it takes to get a team out of this league and is doing it with far less resources than the billy big bollocks ex EFL sides who think appointing someone who wouldn't look out of a place at a tech start up is a smart move..

Aldershot (and Boreham Wood, apparently )
Ian Burchnall..".EUFA pro licence, modern coach. As is Danny Searle at Aldershot. DS is obviously well-up on coaching, but players at our level struggle with the fancy techniques he favours.
Fancy football would be nice to see, but it ain’t a great success at our level.
An interesting appointment, good luck to him, he’s gonna need it.

But when the landscape of the division is changing around you, "knowing what it takes to get out of this league" becomes more and more redundant. With Rowe's background, the Stockport guy and now Notts, I'd say it's quite possible that times are changing at this level and there is going to be a different approach adopted by more and more clubs.

Should make for an interesting season next time round anyway.

It's sacking season, Bromley binned off their manager too.

Looks like our plan to have a new boss in charge by the end of the week isn't working out and that interviews are still ongoing. Appears that our fitness coach is preparing to lead from the touchline on Saturday.

Like the Notts guy, Michael Jolley is a manager who learnt his craft at university, has coached at a Premier League academy, has strong ties to a Premier League manager (Dyche) and managed in Sweden for a bit.

He is also the worst manager in (or formerly in) football.

That seems weird, hasn’t he been there a million years and done a good job each year?

Just read the statement, they’ve got ambitions of promotion. FFS.

I suspect he probably wants and needs a break, but Bromley might make a lot of sense for NA if not.

Burchnall has a far better CV than Jolley though

I think the changes are needed at the more traditional non league clubs rather than the ex EFL clubs tbh. The players at this level are here because they aren't good enough for the EFL, with one or two exceptions. So don't pretend that clever coaches in turtle necks are needed to get out of non-league football, or that they are going to make journey men better players. They aren't. They aren't needed in League 2 either.. look at the shambles at Salford City.

Old school managers are generally not a good idea if you want long term success.

Any manager that knows what they're doing tactically is preferable unless they have piss poor leadership skills. If you can't lead then you won't succeed in any country.

This looks like a good appointment, I expect Notts to be more consistent now.

Not heard anything about this until about an hour ago whilst flicking through my Youtube subs.
I skimmed past the official Notts video showing him, it wasnt until I got to that NottsCountyTalk one i was like wait, what!

Fullerton ticked boxes, but this guy seems to have them ticked on actually football paper rather than a sweet wrapper.

I think it’s unlikely we’re going to be signing many journeymen from here in, to be honest.

I'm not advocating old skool managers, but at least managers that have played the game and understand the level of football they are managing at. You then balance that experience with more modern coaching and leadership techniques and you have half a chance of doing well. That's why I think ultimately Maynard and Saunders will do ok for the Stones, and why Harry Kewell would be a disaster for Barnet (please appoint him..).

Has he? Looks to me like he managed one team that got relegated and another team that he took over from Potter and nearly got them relegated...

The appointment's certainly got the same vibe about it as us appointing that fraud Jolley, anyway.

What's the crack at Bromley? Thought they were doing quite well given the size of the club at this level. They must be ambitious

I don’t think we can make any judgment because we don’t know enough about Scandinavian football or the circumstances where he was managing.

I’m pretty content that he’s done a good job over there because fans of both clubs have been singing his praises since he got appointed this morning. No idea if that was the case with Jolley.

They're fairly big spenders from what I've heard but to have them 7th at this stage doesn't seem a major under achievement. Sutton are their rivals apparently and with them doing so well on a smaller budget and beating them the other night, sometimes things like that can hasten decisions. Football is still a very emotional game despite the stats drive we've all been discussing.

They should probably be doing better, big budget and decent squad plus one of very few genuine goal scorers. Collapsed from title contenders to the bottom half after Christmas last season as well.

That's kind of my point - can't use his experience in Sweden as a barometer of success. Jolley was apparently praised for his tactical nous in Sweden, so we were all excited. It soon became apparent that his tactics were dreadful.

This bloke could be good, could be bad - just providing a note of caution from our experience.

Tactics are everything at this level. Pragmatic hard work and team spirit will get you into the top half. Fill the team with giant fit tough-guys, and just lump it, will get you into the playoffs. Not so sure about the neat passing game.
I do know that it’s frustrating for these top- badge coaches to have to work with professional bottom- feeders.

I've a horrible feeling we've taken a step backwards. I'm sure he's a good coach but that's a world away from standing alone outside the dugout with the world against you.
All foreign coaches under estimate how competitive our lower leagues are, they forget we've cascaded down two divisions worth of good English pros because we've imported so much foreign talent into the top divisions.
Burchinall is English and from Leicester so won't be totally unaware of non league or Notts County and I'm sure he will be backed but he is more of a punt than say taking on Dave Challinor or someone like him.
Years ago we took on FA technical coach and Kings Lynn manager Howard Wilkinson a man no-one had heard of and he was the best coach and manager we ever had so fingers crossed this is a solid and inspired choice

He signed quite a few English players for Ostersunds from this kind of level (including a lad from Maidstone and one from Guiseley), which presumably suggests he has some kind of handle on what kind of standard it is.

It is extremely different to managing in a league like Sweden, though, where you’ve got such a wild disparity between some of the teams at the top like Malmo who are regulars in the latter stages of the Europa League and those near the bottom that are signing players from Maidstone and Guiseley.

Bromley and Woking always seem to collapse after strong starts to the season.
To be honest I think this is a very odd decision from Bromley at best and impetuous at worst. Bromley have never finished higher than 7th in this division and have never made the playoffs. They’ve got a good chance of reaching the playoffs this season despite Tuesdays loss. I do slightly subscribe to the theory that this happened because Bromley are jealous of Sutton (although we haven’t achieved anything yet this season. Although Bromley have spent the last half century being jealous of Sutton).

Matt Gray also had to adjust his style. The first 18 games last season were awful, but fortunately Gray changed things up - including reverting back to a more tried and tested 442. And even more fortunately our board gave him time to develop and build a strong core of players. I’m not proud to admit that I was keen on Gray leaving back in the Autumn of 2019 but I’m delighted he didn’t and that my doubts were misplaced.

Those are the lessons to be learnt. Managers need to be adaptable to the circumstances of their club at this level and clubs need to be unafraid of allowing managers to develop.
