Gotta admit I am a bit slightly concerned for similar reasons to Jacob, as well as the fact Cookie doesn't really have NL experience. Hopefully the huge lift it'll give everyone to get such a legend back in will push us over the line though, you never know.
Cookie will get the ball on the deck, but I think he'll leave 4-2-3-1 until he has his own players in.

Paul Cook is probably the best appointment the club will ever make. He is an upper league 1 manager prepared to drop to the national league. It’s not long since he was pretty much recognised as a championship level manager - taking a highly paid role at Ipswich in league 1 to try and take them up.

Welcome back Cookie.

Will be fascinating to see how it plays out.

How does Cook’s style differ from JR’s? Clearly VERY different personalities.

If it’s two very different styles of play and as much as this is a great appointment it could clearly mess up your season.

Cook plays 4-2-3-1, which with our current squad would work but would mean benching Asante.

All of the above concerns are valid and shared by a decent proportion of our lot too.

I can't resist it though. He has to come. Paul Cook is probably the best CFC manager we've had in my time. Certainly the most popular...the brand of football his side produced puts him above Duncs for me. Can't wait to see what he does with this team.

Oh it’s a no brainer. After what happened with Rowe, the frankly bizarre circumstances of his dismissal and the trauma that led to, it would be crazy not to appoint a character like Cook with his track record (at Chesterfield and elsewhere) if he’s available and wants to come, despite the concerns.

If you didn’t and the season fell away under Webb, the Chesterfield meltdown and recriminations would probably be comparable to the one our fanbase has on social media every time we fail to beat one of ‘these teams’.

Was there any bitterness over the way he left for Pompey?

Interesting to see how this one goes given that most (all?) who get out the NL have some decent NL managerial experience behind them. Cook had a brief spell down here many, many years ago (Southport?) but was sacked.

One thing I've never quite understood about Cook, and it's not necessarily his fault, but at Chesterfield, Portsmouth and Wigan, financial issues followed. Spent a fortune at Ipswich as well.

Since his earlier managerial appointments, he's come across as a bit of money manager and I'm not sure a Trust run set-up is going to suit him in that respect. Will be interesting to see whether the Trust at Chesterfield can keep up with his demands.

Good appointment on the face of it, mind. Bit of a nightmare at Ipswich but that was a huge squad turnover they had in the summer.

Yes, but only from a **** minority who didn't understand why it happened. Paul would have stayed but the support from the owner stopped...and got us to where we are today.

So he won his last promotion from League One over 3 years ago, with that team getting relegated after 2 seasons in the Championship while going through money troubles, before he failed at a very big spending League One side. Remind you of anyone?

First things first, it's a great appointment for Chesterfield, and you are right to be very excited about it, especially after what has happened the last few weeks.

Devil's advocate from a Wrexham point of view though, a lot of the criticisms levelled at our appointment of Parkinson apply hear, E.G, a past successful manager in higher up aspects but doesn't know the National league and has recently failed and been sacked, albeit at a club higher up with high and possibly unreasonable expectations.

The main difference will be the level of pressure/expectation, both teams are obviously looking at promotion asap but I would imagine that Cook would have the rest of this season and all of next season before Chesterfield fans would even consider turning on him.....It happened to PP at Wrexham before he got to double figures in terms of games.

I won't say good luck as I hope that it fails, that is purely from a promotion rival point of view.

Can see things from both perspectives but he's a manager much better than this level who is inheriting a team in 2nd place in the league with a squad ready made to win the league... if we had a fully fit team. As it is, we've got two of our technicians out in Clarke and Rowe. One or two shrewd signings and we're laughing. Recruitment stopped as soon as Rowe got suspended so we're due a couple of signings.

Definite shades of Paul Parkinson about this.

I don't know what you mean. His 6 month stint with us at the start of his management career made him what he is today!

Rightly or wrongly we all thought Chesterfield were going to get in financial trouble under Rowe anyway so if they do I wouldn’t blame Cook.

He was a name linked with us when Rusk left but was still clinging onto his job at Ipswich so never came into the equation but one I would have been delighted with.

As already previously said the slight question marks are will he try and change you too much and mess with the winning formula?

And, why did it go so wrong in his last job at Ipswich and is that Richardson factor huge?

It’s generally accepted by all, including the Hartlepool lads Soup Ladle and Chief Rocka , that this year’s NL is bigger and better in every way than this year’s L2, in which Cook won a title, so I don’t think that will be a problem.

Startlingly, if we had just had a few dozen more at our home game with Barnet on Tuesday, no less than three NL attendances would have been bigger than every L2 attendance that night (as it was Stockport and Southend were way out ahead).

So Cook will have no trouble adjusting to this wonderful league full of fellow brothers.

Shades of Parkinson???

Cook is twice the manager he will ever be. Parky is a renowned long ball merchant, that was a shite appointment from the get go, his stuttering start hasn't surprised me in the slightest.

Also, Cook is experienced enough to know that coming in and changing everything up in terms of formations, styles of play etc when we've been near the top for the majority of the year just wouldn't make sense. As I said, he will likely slowly start to imprint his style on the team alongside keeping a sense of continuity in the short term, something which keeping Webb on points to.

Longer term I see no reason why Asante wouldn't work off one of the wings in a Paul Cook team. We all know that wingers in Cook's 4-2-3-1 system are basically wide forwards and come inside a lot which to be honest, suits Asante a lot!

This guy really doesn't like us saying anything that isn't pure praise for Chesterfield, does he?

Parkinson has taken Colchester to the Championship, Bradford to a League Cup final and a promotion, and Bolton to a promotion. You’d want to watch Cook’s football over his without doubt, but their records are very similar otherwise.
