Okay just a week to go until the big day and that means one thing, (weather permitting) a host of festive fixtures. Personally I believe nothing beats boxing day footy, from being a child and coming to terms with christmas day being over by eating a load of Turkey sandwiches before carting off to the game with a couple of choccy bars from your selection boxes stuffed in your pocket. Then there is being an adult, still eating the turkey sandwiches but instead of choccy its meeting the lads in the pub then on to the game.

Anyway what are your memories of the boxing day fixtures good and bad from down the years? Been loads at Bury good and bad so will list a few.

PNE 0-0 Bury Boxing Day 2012

A great away day ruined by the police who kept us pegged up in a pub where one young lad was serving us before escorting us out of Preston after the game. Coach we were on had families, grandparents etc but the pigs still insisted on being door handles. Game itself was poor as that idiot Graham Westley employed dour tactics that stopped Bury from playing the famous 'Kev' Brand football, we were the better team though and had the one shot on goal..

Bury 3-3 Wigan Boxing Day 1994

Oh my days, second in the league, best defence in the country facing perenial former none league outfit who brought a healthy 600 away fans (was a big following for them) in ludicrous waterlogged conditions. 1-0 after a minute, bad backpass where the ball stops in a puddle leads to a Wigan equaliser, Bury then go 2-1 up with a goal that mirrored Wigan's equalizer, Wigan equalise after a Bury defender slips in a puddle, 2-2 at HT. 3-2 Bury when another back pass goes awry and their GK Farnworth slides in the mud and misses the ball, Wigan equalise after another back pass gets caught in a puddle, ball stops on the line then bobbles over. Watching at the time was awful, looking back it was hilarious. Wigan fans celebrated like they had won the league at FT.

Bury 4-2 Burnley Boxing Day 1999

Stan the Man returns to Gigg Lane with his Burnley team packed full of ex Shakers. Ground totally packed (Burnley obvs made up nearly half the attendence). Bury 1-0 up with an early goal, Burnley went down to ten men and by half time it was 4-0 Bury. Chants of 'Ternent whats the score' rung out across the ground. Poor second half played out with Burnley backing a damage limitation policy and in typical stupid Bury fashion we let them score two late goals to take the gloss off the result.

Wigan 1-1 Bury Boxing Day 2001

Second proper away game this (excluding Old Trafford in the cup and Dale away where I had sat in the home end with my Dale supporting grandparents).
Wigan in transtion under Jewell, Bury battling for their league 1 (division 2 back then) lives. 1500 odd Shakers in the away end. Poor first half sprung to life in the second half when Wigan scored, Bury with their sparse squad mainly made up of yts players and free transfers battled onwards though and a corner in the last ten minutes was floated over perfectly by Chris Billy and Steve Redmond, 35 year old has been, Mr hoof it anywhere himself chested the ball down perfectly and blasted the ball into the top corner from a tight angle. First ever away goal witnessed from an away end and everyone went mad, beautiful goal, beautiful moment.
Wigan put some late pressure on but could not score again and we deserved our point. Left the impressive JJB stadium very happy.

Sheffield Wednesday 2 Vale 3 2003 - Vale twice came behind as ex Blade Littlejohn inspired Vale against the abuse he got.

Rotherham 1 Vale 2 2012 - Vale comfortably beat their promotion rivals... Again.

Vale 2 Sheffield United 1 2014 A rare league win against the Blades as the game finished in the snow (and a four hour hike in terrible conditions back to Leicestershire)

The bad...

Rotherham 1 Vale 0 - 2008 A flat performance against 10 man Millers. Dreadful

Boxing day football is a pain i the arse.
No bloody trains so if I go I have to drive, which means no drinkies.
Watching the Gills sober is rarely a good idea.

Paul Jewell sorted us a pair of tickets tickets as part payment for some work my Dad had done for him a few weeks earlier. An hour or so in and we were doing enough to stay in the game, 0-0. Then the moment that optimised our time in the Premiership for me - a double sub from United, Cole and Yorke stood there waiting to come on, the greatest strike partnership that's been in the Premier League, months after they'd won the Champions League. Balls.
The game finished 4-0. They went on to walk the league again that season, good times but the image of that substitution was like looking across and seeing two executioners waiting patiently to chop someone's head off, that will always stick with me.

Bantam,
I know exactly how that feels.
We were playing an FA Cup tie at Highbury and were drawing a cracking game 2-2.
We then looked across and Saw Pires and Henry waiting to come on.
Well that was that and we lost 5-2.
Why did they have to ruin a bloody good game of football?

Vale 3 - 1 West Brom early 90's. Ended with the pitch completely covered in snow. Great match.

Man City 0 - 1 Vale mid 90's. Foyle scored the winner in front of 3,000 Vale fans. Best boxing day ever.

Great memories.

Kevin Keegan having a proper tantrum when Crewe vs Man City was called off due to frozen pitch.

It was gone 2pm, tbf.

*This may not have been boxing day. I have been living a lie for the past 14 years. It was Boxing Day when we beat Man City a few years earlier. Fuck yeah.

Great team that was.

After Man U and Arsenal we have the best Boxing Day record in the Premier League apparently.

Correct...

'Third place in the league is occupied by Coventry City.

With 11 wins in 21 games, Coventry have won 36 points on Boxing Day - an average of 1.7 per game.'

I love Boxing Day fixtures, always have. I don't think I have missed an away Boxing day fixture since I was a kid in the 90s.

Been some absolute shite ones since we have been relegated from the Premier League. As above, we have one of the best records in the top league, but we have barely won on Boxing day since 2001.

Some shite games include a 2-1 loss away at Leeds in 2005, 0-0 draw at Swansea in 08 and losing 2-0 to Cardiff in 2010.

The best Boxing Day away match in recent years by some distance was Stevenage away on 2012. We went 1-0 down and scored 3 late in the second half. One of the goals was a chip from McGoldrick from 35 yards, a truly sensational goal. Genuinely thought we were going up that year, the team we had was very decent.
We also beat MK away 2 days later with 5000 or so Coventry fans there.

Boxing day and Christmas football in general are probably the highlight of the season. Loads of games in quick succession, normally it's chilly and you are wrapped up. Most people are off so crowds are higher and the atmosphere better with loads of beer.

Best memory on Boxing day is beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 a few seasons back. Almost 8k in the Bescot, we played well but didn't really threaten Wednesday, until we scored in the 91st and 94th minute to come from 1 down and win 2-1. Lost the plot and cut both my knees for the winning goal.

Wednesday at home definite highlight!

Proper atmosphere after it kicked off, everyone up for it including the players. Great fun when we score to equalize....then score again to fucking win it!

Completely forgot that it kicked off. Probably the only time I've seen the ref call pause the game for 5 minutes whilst the stewards/police got between ours and the Wednesday fans on our near side. Bet the train station was chaos after that. I remember Andy Butler with his arms in the air right infront of the Wednesday fans at 2-1.

What a man.

Don't have many fond Boxing Day memories, mainly because we are usually shit on Boxing Day.

Last season was pretty cool. Went 1-0 up against Oldham through a penalty. Had a man sent off, got pegged back to 1-1. 5 minutes to go, Nicky Ajose puts in a 30 yard lob from the right wing position, away end goes mental. That was pretty decent.

Last home game we had on Boxing Day was pretty good as well, drew 2-2 with Rochdale. They were top of League 2 at the time and absolutely flying. We were a mid table at best, but gave as good as we got. Both sides went for it, scored 4 good goals and it was a cracking game.

Other than that, its slim pickings.

3,500ish. Can't remember the exact figure. The first and last time the club let a team have the entire away and side stand. After they went 1 up one of their fans ran on the pitch passed the home end. One of our chavs launched him and then the game was paused for a good 5 minutes after the left end of our bottom corner and there fans on our near side started having a full on riot, was quite bizarre.

It made the atmosphere though, half the reason why I and Geosaddler completely lost the plot.

Couldn't fault butlers passion, great man!

Went off badly if I recall after the game too, severe lack of police for such a large turnout from Wednesday too. It kicked off the season before when we played them too, dunno what the tension was about lol

Yep thought it was right. I remember going to them both on the supporters bus ffs. About 3500 blades there both times too i think.

Played around Christmas time in 03 as well at Bramall Lane, 0-0 I think.

We're usually turd. Think we beat Burnley at Turf Moor about 7 years ago, other than that I can't remember any wins for us Boxing Day.

That will all change this year though, I fancy our collection of dribbling melts against a high flying Bury side led by an ex-Barnsley manager and ex-Barnsley striker with a point to prove.

Strange thing is Butler is a Wednesday fan, remember the game vividly, we were shit. Oh and the jab Macken got on that vid when celebrating.

I remember being at Bury on Boxing Day in 2004 when the Shrewsbury team bus got stuck in an accident on the M6 and couldn't get there. Our fans managed to get there ok, but the team bus had to go via Stoke to pick some players up on the way and got caught up in the traffic!

Luckily missed the rearranged match which finished 0-0 in early February.
