Clapping on doorsteps was one of the most bizarre points of the entire pandemic. Underfund the NHS, pay those putting their lives on the line peanuts and then stand on your doorstep and clap once a week. Bizarre. It’s like telling someone they’re doing a really good job when you’ve helped put them in the mess they’re in.
Yeah, it was for the masses wasn't it? Give everyone something to talk about and feel all warm and fuzzy inside about. The way that some people were seemingly noting that Viv and John at number 15 weren't out doing the clap was ridiculous too. I gave up after the second week when we had a note come through our door asking us to take the knee on a different day every wek in support of BLM. Not that I don't support BLM, but I had to draw the line. Once I started to question if my neighbours would think I was racist for not doing that I knew it was time to step away from all of it.

It’s classic Bojo symbolism. Build back better, oven ready brexit, clap for the NHS - it’s just jargon that he hopes people latch onto. I think the majority of the country now see him for what he is - all fart and no shit.

How much more transmissible is Omicron compared to Delta though?
if you have more than double the number of cases under Omicron compared to what we had under Delta then we lose any gains made by Omicron being less virulent.
The situation in South Africa cannot be directly applied here for various reasons: ZA’s population is much younger than the UK’s, ZA had much more widespread outbreaks of Alpha and Delta so their population has a higher level of herd immunity than the UK’s.

Problem is people are in hospital and catch it there. A nice stat below from today proves this from London hospitals, it’s more infection but less serious. We have an older and more dense population than SA but the signs of it being less serious we’re there weeks ago.

On 21/11, 83.7% of London beds occupied by confirmed COVID patients were being treated primarily for COVID.

On 21/12, this had dropped to 74.7% - an artefact of the high prevalence in London, which means more “incidental” admissions and nosocomial (hospital acquired) infections.

I didn’t do the clap once. Much as I like many of my neighbours, I refused to stand and clap the NHS with people who I know have voted to defund it for the last 11 years. (The old saying about voting for dogshit if it had a blue rosette on very much applies around here).

Surely the answer to that is to keep as many people out of hospital as possible? But you want to get rid of restrictions?

Regardless of which party is in powers it will always be underfunded, it’s a socialist entity and will never work regardless of how much you throw at it.

The vaccines are people keeping people out, that’s what they’re designed for. You want to lock your life down go for it but don’t expect everyone else too. Two years of my daughters life taken away so much so she’s scared shitless of new people, fuck the NHS price of crap that it is and always has been.

You’re joking I feel cheated now, if I’d known I was clapping for the NHS I wouldn’t have bothered, I thought that I was clapping for the fantastic job Boris and his government were doing. :lac:

Nothing like a good spittle flecked rant in the morning.

I didn't clap because the whole idea of that was inane. I do support the NHS, far from being a SOCIALIST PIECE OF SHIT I am of the belief that its an institution we should be enormously proud of in this country and should protect as much as we can- if we got rid of a nationalised health service it we'd be a disaster. Is it mismanaged? does it waste money? probably. That doesn't mean it's not a good thing. For starters when you consider that something like 63% of Bankruptcy in the USA is down to medical costs, that alone is enough to sell me on the idea of 'socialised medicine'.

The amount of money this country wastes is staggering. Two things we could have/should do to pump some money into the NHS are that we shouldn't have decided to spend £100bn on HS2 and we should legalise and monetise weed.

What are you on about mate, they clapped them for weeks?

Didn't expect this to be mentioned on here but it's something I'm massively in support of too. Keep it regulated, whack a decent tax on it and in turn there are less prisons occupied by petty dealers - what's not to like?

Old Tory voters wouldn't vote for it so it ain't happening whilst these vile toads are in power. Labour should be pushing it, they probably won't

Omicron develops quicker than Delta, which ultimately speeds up transmission rates but I think that means we'll see regional plateauing of cases quicker too.

While I do agree that the NHS is something to be proud of and to protect, I think there are ultimately better models around the world. The NHS and the US system are at opposite ends of the scale. There's a middle ground. In Korea for example, the system is completely privatised but heavily subsidised by the government which means you get faster, more efficient care than you do here at a low cost. The downside of that is that you still need insurance, so big procedures and illnesses do bring your premium up like if you had two crashes in a year then your car insurance would rocket. The NHS could be perfect but the underfunding makes it fairly flawed with no signs of improvement. Which is pretty much what you're alluding to, so I'm not disagreeing. A perfectly operating NHS is essentially an ideology though.

Exactly. So many countries around the world are adopting more progressive attitudes towards recreational drugs and reaping the benefits not only financially but also in terms of drug abuse falling. It's incredibly frustrating that our government has an archaic view on drug use.

It already bumfucks the most vulnerable by taking a fair sized portion of their wages through no choice and offers a terrible service. Currently you can’t get a face to face doctors appointment, wait months for referrals and years for operations but yeah it’s brilliant. It was a good idea in the 50’s but a booming population since it’s birth has made it useless despite its outrageous funding. £60k for one ever so important diversity coordinators or 2 unimportant nurses at that cost, strip out the bollocks jobs like that and it might be worth saving.

NHS needs a total restructuring, but is such a political hot -potato that it won’t be dealt with by short-term government. A totally non-political body should be set-up to replan structure, particularly at management and departmental level, with emphasis on community care.

Personally I’m happy to pay that chunk of my wages each week when it means that whenever either myself or anybody close to me needs urgent medical care they can do so without the worry of being in debt for years afterwards to pay it off.
In the past 2 years myself and my Wife have been to Grimsby hospital more times than I can remember as we’ve both been really ill and every single time the NHS staff have been absolutely fantastic with us.
Despite the shortage of staff and funds the majority of NHS workers are incredible people doing amazing jobs.
A chunk of our wages each week seems a very small price to pay to preserve this IMO.

No discussion about the NHS should start without emphasising that it needs to be funded properly, as it was between 2000ish and 2010.

Don’t let the ghouls in the right wing media persuade you otherwise.

Mine and my family's experience with the NHS, for some serious illnesses, is completely different. Fantastic service.

Well no, they're not but that's entirely why the point you raise is valid. As with any field, some within it are more competent than others and probably more so when your field is stressful as fuck and you're underpaid. Your guess about others not having wonderful experiences is bang on but that's the nature of the beast and one of the pitfalls of underfunding the NHS means there's a lack of consistency of service.

That was supposed the ultimate point of Lansley‘s reforms a decade ago but it was fatally compromised by a pointless restructuring and the systematic underfunding of the NHS, Public Health and Social Care. However, the SoS had very little influence on the day to day running of the NHS especially with politically savvy heads of NHS England in post such as Simon Stevens and David Nicholson. The government’s current pending legislation on Integrated Care Systems looks to put lots of power back in the SoS‘s hands.

The genesis for the NHS‘s current capacity issues (the reason for the staffing issue is obvious) came about because of the desire to take more care out of Acute hospitals and into primary care. At the end of the Labour government, the Darzi review proposed the creation of polyclinics. Under the Tories, the polyclinics idea was dropped but acute bed numbers have still steadily dropped over the past decade.

If the trust you used was Barking, Havering and Redbridge then I have to tell you that they have always been a mess and there’s no end to that in sight.

•Get more people vaccinated in the UK , up to 90% rather than the current 70%. How you legislate against vaccine misinformation is above my pay grade.

•Get the world vaccinated, including lower income countries, so there is less chance of variants.

•Get proper ventilation in schools so they’re not sources of infection. Next to fuck all has been done with this.

•Proper sick pay for those who don’t have it. Infected people won’t stay off work for 96 quid a week. ( increased union membership will help with this so employees can actually stand up for themselves at work).

They’re just the start. Experts in the field would have more. We’ve been fairly lucky with this pandemic, the next one might not be as relatively benign. This should be used as a trial run for something more serious, but it won’t.

Gotta say, grown adults saying they’re bored or fed up with pandemic restrictions is one of the most pathetic things I’ve ever read.
Hahaha yeah it’s pathetic not wanting to go about your day to day life without restrictions. The only pathetic melt here is you.

Feel free to operate with your own restrictions if you’re so concerned.

Cant vaccinate the whole world if a lot of countries are refusing the vaccine. You admit you have no idea how to get more people vaccinated.

“get better ventilation” probably not practical.

who is paying for this sick pay? How would small employees realistically afford this when they’re already struggling because of the pandemic?

Individual responses to the pandemic will just mean it will continue indefinitely.
