From the Essex Chronicle -

The Chronicle understands the Cowleys have been offered a two-year deal and a big budget to work with, thanks to the club's South African-based investor Clive Nates, as the Imps aim to make a return to the Football League.

The Cowleys might not be the only ones swapping the Avanti Stadium for Sincil Bank with defender Sam Habergham and midfielder Alex Woodyard rumoured to be following the management team.
I'd be delighted if Habergham did follow him, been impressed every time I've seen him.

From Braintree's OS:

DANNY & NICKY STEP DOWN
Braintree Town are on the look out for a new manager after Danny and Nicky Cowley resigned on Thursday evening.

Chairman Lee Harding was disappointed with the news: "Yes, it's a shame for us but, first of all, I would like to thank both Danny and Nicky for their efforts throughout their year at our Club. What they have achieved with the players has been remarkable. But it seems the offer of a £500,000 playing budget and full time status has proved to be too good for them to turn down. I think it is an incredibly brave decision on their parts, but I really do hope it works out for them - they are good people.

"Our thoughts now to turn to closer to home and we now seek applicants for the management role at the Avanti Stadium. The past twelve months have proved that part-time clubs and, in particular, Braintree Town can compete in this division. History shows us that some clubs chose to flirt with their financial futures in a desperate scramble to secure promotion to the Football League, but we prefer to build our Club on and off the pitch on more solid foundations.

"The windfall we have received from the play-offs will allow us to further improve both our playing budget and playing surface over the coming months and I now look forward to selecting the next manager of the Club to continue our push towards our ultimate ambition."

Their Chairman's been trying his best all week to put them off and came out with, "It would be another feather in our cap if Danny was to go on to bigger and better things, but I am not certain that Lincoln City, who finished in the bottom half of the table, is a bigger and better club."

Brilliant.

He's been incredibly bitter about it all.

I'm assuming we'll not be required to pay compensation now because I'm sure it was a 2 year deal, or maybe I've made that up and they've just resigned early from a one year deal.

£500K budget, ahahaha, piss off Lee, it could very easily be 50% on top of that.

I think I would be bitter mind you, losing the best manager in your tiny club's history to a team that continually takes six points off you season after season.

Why is your budget so much higher than it was when Gary Simpson was in charge?

I don't think it'll be as high as Crazy suggests, but we've got an Imp supporting South African on board, who's putting £100k a season into the budget for the next 5 years (and possibly beyond), which takes it up a bit.

We also cut down on housing expenses. When Simpson was here, we had 8-10 in housing, last season we had 3 at the start and then 2 left. Lots of bits and pieces of other savings, too.

Ah fair enough, that makes sense!
Lincoln fans will know better than myself, I only know the budget you had under Simpson, and with £100k extra investment, £500k seemed like a reasonable figure.

Last season was £550K yeah? So £650K at least then.

Yeah, but we're having to pay a management team this season.

Isn't that were Clive's extra cash comes in? To pay for the new management team?

I thought it was roughly one million over 5 years, so about 200k every year. Think 100k is going on the manager(s) salaries and the other 100k is used to offset any sudden transfer need or if the working capital gets stretched.

Yep that's it as I understand it. Clive appears to have a blinder here getting the Cowleys here.

I reckon Clive Nates has had a big hand in the upturn of the club since his involvement. Even having a possible link with South African players is worlds apart from how things were a short time ago. I met Clive before the Kiddy home game and I must admit he was a very unassuming, genuine and as down to earth a guy you could want to meet.

It will be interesting to see how the Cowleys get on, hopefully they can turn us into a force next season. I also hope the fans help the war chest by getting season tickets and the other ticket offers available.

Will it be our turn for once over the next couple of seasons?

According to the Braintree forum, the Cowley's haven't been taking a wage this season.

Where's this £100k come from for the management? I've always read it as £100k in the budget.

I'd be amazed if we're paying 2 guys a combined figure of £100k, considering previous managers down here have been around the £30-35k mark.

Just the rumours that I heard but have no idea how true it is.

I would think the whole of the new management will be on that Luke. I wonder how much a head of department at a high school would be on?
We'd have to match that and give him a bit more and the same for the rest of them.

Confirmed now - 2 year deal, which I suspect has a year option in.

At the Club last night when Danny & Nicky resigned (stepped down) I have it on good authority they have been given a 2yr contract at 135K per year between them plus the rental on a 4 bedrom house for when family come up to visit. Looks to me that Lincoln are putting a lot of eggs in one basket, and although I believe Danny & Nicky are winners, what happens if they are unable to get the Imps up to the FL within that time frame?

Fair enough, I'll stand corrected on that one then. I know they've got a house because my mate sorted it for them. No idea r.e. time frame but it's hardly shit or bust money, so I doubt they'll be any consequences. We'll just do what everyone does and hope the next appointment is 'the one'!

It's a lot more than we usually pay, mind. For example, David Holdsworth's full management team budget was £50k.

They've just finished a fans forum and I have to say, I'm incredibly impressed by the pair of them. It seems I wasn't the only one either, they received a standing ovation at the end!

They've clearly done their homework, having watched every DVD up to November and plan to watch the rest of the season. They've identified how we need to adopt a different style of play away from home and defend better from set pieces, where we concede a high number of our goals.

They also made some fairly interesting comments about how to nullify Grimsby...

Don't give away ludicrous penalties and check that your goalie hasn't had a brain injury before the match?

What affect is the arrival of Cowley likely to have on existing players (have you put out a retained list yet?)
Was the Braintree playing style similar to yours last season? (can't remember how you played as the home game was early season)
