Moomin- How do Exeter manage to keep their top youngsters long enough to play for them. We are just losing another, England u16 goalie to Leeds.

What category academy are you? Think that makes a difference I think.

Dunno, obviously low down in the chain. Frustrating though when one of your old youngsters is picked for his country and you've never seen him play.

Crawley sign Jack Payne from Eastleigh on a 1 year deal with an option for a further year.

Seems there are a few Jack Paynes around so in the interests of clarity I copied and pasted the following from the official site.

"Payne spent his last three years at National League Eastleigh, where he made 83 league appearances across three seasons for the club.

The midfielder spent two years with Ebbsfleet United after a successful 2016/17 promotion season with Blackpool, where he starred in a 2-1 play-off final win over Exeter City. Payne also enjoyed one season with Leyton Orient in 2015/16 after four years at Peterborough United.

At the Posh, Payne made 14 appearances in the Championship in the 2012/13 season, before enjoying two full campaigns in League One where he featured 74 times across the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons, scoring 5 goals."

Seems a little odd that after winning promotion from league two he dropped to Ebbsfleet but maybe moving back south had a lot to do with it.

Casey

Just re read that statement from our official site and I'm not sure it's clear at all.

For a second I thought our Jack Payne had decided to move to Crawley! Thankfully it's a totally different one.

We have our first transfer rumour, Luke Hendrie who just left Grimsby.

It's a football player which is a start.

Darren Pratley signs a one-year deal at Orient. Good signing, expected to see him stay in L1 to be honest.

Love the bloke, best of luck to him.

I think it’s partly down to us being able to say that they will be give them the same opportunities as Matt Grimes and Ollie Watkins so players tend to want to follow their career path.

That said there have been a few we’ve not been able to persuade to stay. Jay Stansfield went to Fulham without playing for us and he’s banging them in for their u18s. Also Ben Chrisene went to Villa and he looks like a hell of a prospect.

We’re currently in negotiations with our academy GK who’s had trials with Chelsea and Everton, and it looks like he’s staying. But we have a striker (Sonny Cox) who’s 16 and has had trials at Man Utd. He scored 4 in a trial game for them so the chances of us keeping him is slim but we’re doing everything we can as he could be worth a shit load if he realises his potential with us!

Sadly it’s so common for clubs our size to lose players early and it’s not fair at all. But I guess players will always be attracted by the big club and wage hike.

A bit shocked we’ve not gone for a centre midfielder so far in his mid 20s.

I see he played a fair few games for you last season, hoping his legs have one more season in them!

I’ve been told we’ve agreed deals with Charlie Daniels and striker Paul Smyth.

i'm going to start the rumour that we are just waiting for Carlisle fans to stop crying about Zanzala and Farman and then we'll announce Rhys Bennett...
and then do the same with Callum Guy.
(ok maybe not really the last one....)

Don’t let his age fool you, comfortably one of the fittest players in the squad, doesn’t stop grafting.

He gets plenty of rest when serving all his suspensions from the 100s of yellow cards he gets anyway.

We’ve signed centre back Tom Davies on a 1 year contract. Was at Barrow last season on loan. Any good Barrow fans? Don’t know a lot about him.

good player, communicates and leads a defence well,
I'm sure he would have been a player we looked at (if he'd played for Carlisle before).
but seriously - good signing - IF he can avoid injury.

What’s the situation in Carlisle? They seem to be losing players from last season? Where they offered new deals?

I dont think the likes of Watkins and Grimes were the finished article at 16, they went much later when they had had full seasons with us.
Ampadu went too soon, as did Stansfield and Chrisene. But that's what happens at this level

I’m happy with our business so far, we’ve dropped the average age after having a very old team last season so should be better suited to high tempo DC likes his teams.

Wilson looks a decent replacement for Pope, younger. Martin surely is an upgrade on Brisley.

Garrity looks more a squad player and add in Walker replacing Joyce who was into his mid thirties it is promising.

See what tomorrow brings. Looks like we’ve done most of our business early and got our main targets.

Does location play a part perhaps? No uprooting necessary for a 15/16-year-old moving from Bradford to Leeds unlike what you'd go through leaving Exeter.

He came to us to get his fitness back after a year out, but was injured or unfit half the time he was here too. Looked a seriously good player and a leader, but I reckon there were too many question marks about his fitness as far as our board were concerned.

I’d rather have Josh Wright back than Jack Payne back. Enjoy!

Stansfield and Ampadu had no problems moving to London at 16. Getting someone to go the other way would be a bigger problem!

Yeah but after leaving you he was promoted with Blackpool.

What's so bad about him?

Casey

He’s a paceless, weak, lazy crab of a player who offers zero goal threat or protection for the defence. He’s just sort of there. Shit beard as well.

Aaron Martin now confirmed, 2 year deal.

We seem to be announcing one new signing a day so looks like a few are done!
He was popular when he played for Exeter. I thought he was very good, and was really surprised when he moved on. There was talk of him possibly falling out of favour with our manager as we was dropped for a while even though he had been playing really well. It did coincide with us getting a youthful loan player from West Brom who took his spot and who now plays regularly for West Brom, so I suspect that was the real reason. Anyways, I reckon you've picked up a decent player there
