TEAM NEWS
Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is nearing a return after a hamstring injury but will not be fit to play against Manchester United on Sunday.

None of the other players on a lengthy injury list are close to fitness, with Daniel Sturridge still sidelined.

Manchester United will be without Bastian Schweinsteiger with a knee problem, while fellow midfielder Michael Carrick is also injured.

Defender Phil Jones is expected to return soon following his ankle injury.

MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES
Jonathan Pearce: "It'll be rampantly passionate - and that's just Jurgen Klopp on the touchline. His team showed resilience to equalise late on against Arsenal but they do look jaded.

"Interestingly, though, from 1 December to 31 January they'll have played just one more game than Paris St Germain and one fewer than Barcelona. So much for the continental mid-season break making a huge difference!

"With Liverpool suspect every time the ball gets whipped into their box, Wayne Rooney could become the highest one-club Premier League scorer. But with good service, the maligned Christian Benteke could maintain his decent record against United in a likely draw."

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "Sunday is important for the table because we are close together. Both teams need the points. Derbies are the salt in the soup.

"It's a special game for me and for the club. I enjoyed the atmosphere against Arsenal but I think we can do better."

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal on whether playing Liverpool is his side's biggest league game: "It is how the fans see it. I feel it also already four times.

"We have played each other four times - in the USA and the league. You can see it in the faces of the players.

"The passion to play these kinds of games is very high."

LAWRO'S PREDICTION
I never thought Liverpool were in control of the game against Arsenal and it is likely to be the same against Manchester United, who will have had an extra day of rest. That might affect Liverpool's ability to press, which would definitely help United.

I don't see United playing as open as they did against Newcastle at Anfield, though. Louis van Gaal is under a bit of pressure, but I don't think his side will lose.

Prediction: 1-1

Klopp called Fergie the 'John Lennon of football' today. Could you imagine the pitchforks had Hodgson said that?

Just don't lose this one. Give me the dullest 0-0 ever with no shots at all if you must, but don't lose this one.

I think even the craziest Liverpool fans must admit that Fergie is among the best ever.

Although Liverpool were a fierce beast against Arsenal, I feel Man Utd will take the sting out of them and get a draw. Possibly a 1-0 win to Utd.

As much as I despise Fergie, he was/is one of the best managers in history.

I can see Martial doing some damage.

Much better than any other player that will be out there.

If he plays on the right against Moreno, yeah. If he's on the left wing, I'd fancy Clyne to deal with him.

Stockport County.
Joint scouse-manc team (everyone fit)
DDG
Clyne Smalling Skrtel Shaw
Carrick Henderson
Milner Herrera Coutinho
Martial

Not even very good that is it?
I'm sure both sets will argue for another 1 or 2 players of their own here and there but I doubt it would improve the quality too much.

And yes Carrick, he's still class. Yes Milner over Memphis, Firmino or any other fucker who hasn't put two decent games together.

Milner, Skirtel :brill: Even the Liverpool fans wouldnt pick them two.

If we include Shaw then you can include Sturridge too, move Martial out wide to get rid of the most pedestrian Milner. If not it's defintely Mata who is a far superior player.

Sakho for Skirtel.

Carrick's legs have gone, I'd have Schneirderlin partnering Henderson.

Like most people who don't watch Milner often or indeed football, you underrate him. And then overrate Mata, the ultimate MOTD player.

Skrtel isn't ideal but what on earth has Sakho done to prove he'd be ahead of him?

Nope, Milner has the odd good game but he's vastly overrated due to his work rate. He has no outstanding qualities. He isn't good enough positionally or pass the ball well enough to play in centre mid. Out wide he can't beat a man, cross well nor is he a particualrly good goalscorer.

I'm not Mata's biggest fan but he's still a brilliant player His limitations means he isn't alongside the likes of Silva and Ozil but he's in the class below. He's miles ahead of Milner.

As for Sakho over Skirtel, how about the ability to actually defend?

No point in comparing, Mata and Milner are completely different players. Milner would be much more important to Jurgen Klopp than players like Mata. On the other hand, Mata would be fit better with teams like Arsenal.

I wouldn't put Milner anywhere near a combined XI tbh always looks like he's carrying a caravan on his back when he tries to run, can't cross and them floated corners piss me right off!

De Gea
Clyne
Smalling
Lovren
Shaw/Gomez
Can
Bastian
Henderson
Coutinho
Herrera
Martial/Sturridge (But he's never gonna be fit)

Fair enough re:Milner you lot see him more than me. I've always liked him.

Gomez? Has he even played 10 premier league matches? I've seen him once, vs United earlier in the season and he was terrible. Young lad, learning and all that so not going to dig him out too much for one match but surely he hasn't done enough to be considered.

Lovren in there as an option shows the lack of quality both sides have at CB.

He's on a wind up mate. Only Coutinho would get in a combined team, and even then I'd take an in-form Mata ahead of him.

Clyne will put up a better effort, no doubt. I still believe Martial will make things happen down that side.

It's clear when you watch him he's a bit special.
