I can't say I remember (despite being there) but I'm reliably informed that a drunk Lee Walker came on as a sub and scored our 2nd in a 2-0 victory over Marlow in May 1998.

I've seen more than one manager have a pint at half time in the Hellenic League. And I've seen a manager have a pint sat on the top of his dugout during the match.

I have a friend from Kendal who used to work for Morecambe FC as a teenager back in the nineties, selling lottery tickets, and he tells a good story.

In one game at Farsley Celtic, he was watching from the clubhouse with the rest of the club staff. Farsley Celtic had this goalkeeper about 40 years old who was a former international from the Caribbean, and he was a big feller. At half time, while the rest of the team headed for the dressing room, he headed straight for the clubhouse. He ordered a pint of best and a pie with chips and gravy. He ate/drank his meal and then with five minutes remaining till the second half, he ordered another pint, necked it and took up his position between the sticks for the second half.

Whatever happened to Paddy Kenny after that?

Genuinely fat goalies were one of the great joys of our glue league days. My favourite one was the obese Trafford keeper who would look disconsolate if anyone commented on his body image, and do the "it's me glands!" excuse. The Trafford manager referred to his players in the programme as "my babies."

who remembers why Devonshire is now manager of Braintree Town? - http://www.courier.co.uk/STRINGER-QUITS/story-11982531-detail/story.html
Yep, Rod Stringer quit over a car. In his words: "In the end it all came down to the car. They wanted to get me one at auction for four grand – what sort of car am I going to get for that? It'll be about as reliable as the weather"

Still, it turned out excellently for Braintree. I don't think Stringer would have led them to 6th last season.

yep, as a follower of all Essex and south-east non-league I can't quite believe the events at Braintree and the job Alan Devonshire has done there, they still have a nothing budget yet still survive, with some ease, in the top tier of non-league. I predicted them to just be whipped every game in their first season, when they stayed up to be found out in the 'second season syndrome' - and this is from someone who watched them doing my rounds in the world of non-league.

That's an odd thing for him to say given that the weather in Braintree is quite predictable. It pisses down for ten minutes and then they postpone all of their games for the next fortnight.

How could I forget this! a guy that embraces all that is tinpot - this is a superb blog: http://adventuresintinpot.blogspot.co.uk/

Can't recommend that blog highly enough. I've not read much of his German groundhopping but his West Country stuff was hilarious. Here's a choice passage:

"So that's Longwell Green Sports, who play at the Longwell Green Community Centre and are nicknamed 'The Green'; anyone want to take a guess at their club colours?

"WRONG

"It's blue and white stripes. Obviously."

Are Borehamwood another bankrolled outfit? For as much as I've been told they had this lovely non-league ground invested on them a while back and still can't get the numbers in for it, and now efforts are going towards the squad.

If so, a 2015/16 Conference season containing Flyde, Barrow, Ebbsfleet and Borehamwood would feel a very artificial one.

Anyway, back to the tinpottery. (If a rural west Lancashire team entering the national structure isn't tinpot enough.)

Barrow are a half-decent sized non-league club, as are Ebbsfleet really. Fylde and Borehamwood though? Christ.

Fylde and Borehamwood would still be better than Whitehawk. Anything would be better than Whitehawk.

Whitehawk, didn't they try to change their name to Brighton City...but for some reason weren't allowed to.

The FA wouldn't allow the name change, I dunno why though. Their supporters were dead against it - well the 50 odd hardcore fans anyway.
They are sure to go pop - think it was 5 years ago they were Sussex county league champions and they averaged about 100, now fighting for promotion to the top tier of non-league football and they average 267 this season. There is clearly no interest in East Brighton for a football club, why throw the money at it?

I've found this: still doesn't actually say why, do Darlington fans know why they couldn't change name? http://www.thefa.com/news/governance/2014/may/fa-council-rules-on-name-changes

True but if they dont come up this year they surely will next.

Next year will be harder for them, honestly - two of ourselves, Margate, and Dulwich will be up and I'd imagine all will be at the top end, also Dartford will have a whole offseason to prepare for the league and should challenge also. Plus Bromley if they don't go up. Conference South will be a tough, tough league next season.

The FA recognises Darlington 1883 as a new club and NOT the same Darlington FC as before, so it's the usual stuff about phoenix clubs needing a name change. Clearly they aren't going to let them change back, at least not this quickly!

Boreham Wood are self-sustainable, they've invested heavily in things off the field (3G pitches amongst other revenue streams) and with the income they receive from Arsenal for their ladies team then it doesn't surprise me to see them top of the Conference South.

I don't like them but their method is the way to go.

Yep, you're absolutely right. It's just that they get terrible crowds, which is a common problem for North London/Herts borders non-league clubs. Also, they haven't risen from nowhere like Fylde, Eastleigh or Fleetwood. They've been at Ryman Premier/Conference South level for the last couple of decades.
