Always liked the look of Jake Young from the brief glimpses I’ve seen. Think he’d be a smart pickup for a League Two side. Still only 20 as well so plenty of time to develop.

Absolutely, got a lot of talent, needs a run of games. Great on the ball, sort of player capable of going on runs where he beats two or three players and lashes one in the top corner. Tap into his ability on a consistent basis and he’ll be a cracking signing for someone.

Did Whitehouse do much or struggle to recover from his long term injuries?

Got a serious knee injury around April last year, has only been able to start full training again a couple of weeks back. Feel sorry for the bloke he was pretty good when he played.

Was it the same one he did at Grimsby?

The irony in his two long term injuries is that he prided himself on his fitness and never missing games up to that point, he was as fit as a fiddle.

Yeah same knee unfortunately. I would have given him a 6 month deal to see where he’s at, was good last season and we could have used his experience in midfield next season.

A bit of a dreamer when out of possession though. I think that's what did for him at our place.

Out of contract for us:

Joe Wildsmith - will probably be let go. Dawson will get another chance after a good year with Exeter.

Chey Dunkley - I’m 50/50. Never really been a regular starter. One of the best I’ve seen in the air but pace let’s him down.

Sam Hutchinson - I’d let him go. Past his best now and the wrong side of 30. Get someone younger and more reliable in.

Jack Hunt - Keep. Hasn’t let us down this season and a good attacking outlet from RWB.

Callum Paterson - He can go for me. A lot of effort, not much ability.

Massimo Luongo - Has struggled with injuries like too many of our big players over the last couple of years but he’s earnt a new deal the second half of this season IMO.

Saido Berahino - I’m not overly keen, has looked better as the seasons gone on as he was miles off the pace when he first signed. Moore loves him so will get a new deal I’d imagine.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing - if we’re playing with wing backs next season he can go. Decent winger but a waste of money if he doesn’t fit the system.

Out of the loanees, I’d want us to go back in for BPF, Dean and Storey but I imagine they’ll all be wanting to play Championship.

Just released our retained list and no great surprises.

Players leaving are:
Nigel Atangana - good servant but injury prone.
Callum Rowe - Slightly surprised he’s not got another year as he’s young and has potential. Will be a good signing for a L2 club.
Colin Daniel - Poor player for us and been loaned to Aldershot.
Ben Seymour and some other youngsters

Loan players leaving:
Cameron Dawson - Class ‘keeper and he will be so hard to replace. Expecting him to get back into the Sheff Wed first team picture.
Offrande Zanzala - Worked his bollocks off but lacks finesse and quality.
Padraig Amond - Experienced and can see him coming back as a coach in the future. Scored a huge goal to win our game at Carlisle.
Kieran Phillips - Lacks physicality but scored two huge goals for us.

In negotiations with:
Jonathan Grounds - I’ve been impressed with him. Swindon fans said he was shite but he’s put in some great performances and we can still benefit from his experience.

Taylor has said he wants to add first team quality and hopefully we can do that to make sure we compete next season.

Now I've had some time to digest the fact that we'll be in this league next year... I'm bracing myself for a big rebuild.

We don't really announce contract lengths, so most of this will be guess work based on our local journo's article the other day about the summer plans:

Out of Contract - Should keep
GK) Franco Ravizzoli - Did nothing wrong this season but isn't a number 1, and probably isn't even Football League quality. I'd keep him though as our only other keeper is 17 and Franco is a bit of a cult hero now after the AFC game.
RWB - Tennai Watson (Option) - Was excellent when he got a run of games but got injured towards the end of the season. Definitely need to keep.
LWB - Dan Harvie (Option) - Our main LWB this season and is a bit of a marmite figure in the fanbase, but we don't want to start from scratch so he's a definite keep.
LWB - Brandon Mason - never actually played a game for us after coming in after the January window but I like the look of him based on Watford and Coventry, so keeping him in could be good so that we actually have one position we don't need to sign somebody in.
CM - Josh McEachran - Excellent player. Definitely keep.
CM - David Kasumu - Another excellent player that we've had a contract on the table for a while. Whether he signs it is up to him of course but he's a must keep if we can.

Out of Contract - Released
CB) Aden Baldwin - I don't remember him playing more than one game and he's been injured since November. That one game he played brilliantly in, but the injury has soured me a bit.
CM) Hiram Boateng - This one will hurt but I can't see him staying. The fans would love it after coming back in and scoring after Russ Martin hadn't even given him a squad number, but I'm 95% sure he'd want game time elsewhere.
ST) Connor Wickham - Just hasn't done enough, there are better striking options out there.
W/ST) Jay Bird - A homegrown kid with a bad injury record. A shame if he goes, but I personally wouldn't keep him

Contracted
CB) Dean Lewington
CB) Zak Jules
CB) Warren O'Hora
CB) Harry Darling
CM) Matt Smith
AM/W) Scott Twine
ST) Mo Eisa
CM/W) Dan Kemp

And the Kids
CM) John Freeman
LWB) Brooklyn Ilunga
CB) Jack Davies
W) Lewis Johnson
GK) Ronnie Sandford

Of those contracted I don't expect to see Twine or Darling in a Dons shirt again and I'd happily sell Jules, meaning that my ideal transfer window would need to see us bring in at least:
1 x GK
1 x RWB
2 x CB
2 x CM
1 x RW
1 x LW
2 x ST

Do you really expect Boateng to leave DippyDon ? I saw he played in at least one of the play off games for you?

Cambridge fans would have him back in a shot. I would at least, he'd provide the control and passing range we've missed this season. I suspect his wages could be an issue for us.

Personally I do. He’s had a tough 12 months after coming back from Cambridge having been left out of the squad by Russ, not given a squad number to then being thrust back in once he left and winning us some vital points to become a hit of a cult hero. Ultimately though he’s not getting a great deal of game time and is down the pecking order so I can’t imagine we’ll offer another contract.

I'd take Hiram back. He's a bit slow but he's got some skill. Scored a few incredible goals for us.

So would I, but he did frustrate the hell out of me sometimes. Scored two absolute worldies for us but always felt he didn’t score anywhere near enough for a player with his ability.

Our retained list is

Contracted:

Keepers:
Mike Cooper
Callum Burton

Centre backs:
James Bolton
James Wilson
Dan Scarr
Macauley Gillesphey
Brendan Galloway

Wingbacks:
Joe Edwards
Conor Grant
Ryan Law
George Cooper - Transfer Listed

Midfielders:
Danny Mayor
Jordan Houghton
Panutche Camara - Transfer Listed
Adam Randell
Alfie Lewis

Strikers:
Ryan Hardie
Luke Jephcott
Niall Ennis

Players gone back to parent clubs:
Steven Sessengon
Romoney Critchlow
Ryan Broom
Jordan Garrick

Camara transfer listed due to refusing to sign a new contract. Club would rather get a fee this summer than lose him for free next season. George Cooper is crocked, believed to have problems off the field also.

We need a right wing back, a midfielder or two and a striker.

Do you think you'll go back in for Broom on a permanent deal?
Most likely. I was chatting to him in the bar after the last game against MK Dons and he said he loves it and wants to stay. He’s transfer listed so I’d imagine we’ll be in for him.

He has great ability on the ball but if you're expecting him to get forward and score goals I think you'll be disappointed.

I see him as a bit of a deep holding playmaker because he doesn't have the pace on the energy to get up and down. However get him on the ball and he can unlock a defence with his passing range. I'd definitely take him back.

Not so sure. If you look at this goal for us against Lincoln, he ran from inside our own half, beat a couple of players and smacked it in from 25 yards. Just shows what he is capable of. Just a shame he only scored 3 goals in 70 odd appearances for us.

The stats suggest he isn’t a box to box midfielder.

With that I agree with you. I was just pointing out that Boateng CAN produce as a box to box type player, as per the example I gave. For me, I always felt he could’ve done more in an attacking sense for us.

I’d have Boateng back if we had a chance, very useful player.

Adam May has signed a new contract with us which is great news as he’s had an excellent spell with us so far.

Ebou Adams, who had been offered a new contract by us, has signed for Cardiff City. No real surprises that he has moved upwards, big jump from League Two to the Championship, but he deserves a chance to prove himself at that level.

8. Liam Sercombe - CM - Highest earner at the club, Bristol Rovers expressed an interest in January and I expect him to end up there.

Appears I've got this wrong, reports yesterday that he's set to sign a new deal.

Phew, he would have only warmed the bench here. Decent option to bring on though, but not for those wages
