Steve Davis second favourite isn't he? Crewe fans will be praying like mad that he goes!

How can any L1 side consider a manager who has not just taken a side down from this division but took them down without any real fight whilst doing his absolute best to annoy the fans?

I would still be very surprised if Page went to Northampton.

Page says no contact and very little from Vale Park on this, no rumours or anything. Was linked to Cardiff last week and again was false so who knows.

Want it sorting so we can get a new boss in place if need be ASAP to prepare for next season, otherwise not to arsed if he goes. I attended away games at:

Crewe
West Brom
Burton
Sheffield United
Wigan
Coventry

In those 9.5 hours of football I saw 2 draw, 0 wins and zero goals last season!

Rob Page set to be named new manager in the next 24 hours.

My initial underwhelming feeling has given way to optimism, hopefully it was a case of horses for courses at Vale and with a swuad at Sixfields set up for fast, attacking football, he'll play it. Also suspect Kelvin Thomas will have been emphasising the need for this to him, as he has been doing publicly all through the search.

Seems an odd decision for all parties as an outsider, hope he does well for you though. From one former Blades captain to another!

Still think it's less of a surprise then when Wilder moved to us, though that one worked out pretty well. Next order of business is keeping Holmes I guess.

Delighted with this news. Does he take Bodin and the other coaches with him, if not I assume Smurf will appoint Bodin as his replacement. Hopefully he'll take some of the useless players he's offered contracts to with him.

Well if the only choice was Rob Page or Steve Davis, I know who I'd go for.

Bizarre appointment though.

Strange one but not overly disappointed. Wouldn't shock me if Smurf went back for Micky mind!

Excellent news if he's gone, as long as we get a decent replacement who tries to win away games and has a plan B.

That's the key thing. We need to get the replacement right, Michael Brown may well get it, Micky Adams may return for a third go who knows.

Id like to see us go for someone like Adkins, he needs to rebuild his career after his spell in Sheffield but depends how willing he is to drop wage wise.

Worry is with all due respect to Northampton why are we losing to our manager to a smaller club that as far as I am aware (although dont know the outcome after their financial problems) are not being ploughed with money like say a Fleetwood or Crawley. Has the Smurf/sale saga taken that much out of Page? That said a big name boss may see the surge in season tickets we need for the budget.

There are plenty of other shite managers available. I'm sure you can entice one.

Strange appointment. Not too fussed he's gone to be honest. He will probably keep you up, and, hopefully take some dead wood with him.. He always had his favourites.

Hopefully Smurf won't appoint somebody like Dean Saunders or Paul Cox.

Can't believe our fans on here. Excellent manager working wonders with that prick of a chairman. Embarrassing that Page would choose Northampton over us. Shows the effect Smurf is having on the club. Don't trust him to make the right appointment, we've seen his lack of selling skills, who the fuck would want to work with this fucking dickhead. Very worried.

Page had us on 48 points with 11 games left and nearly took us down two seasons ago... wouldn't say hes worked wonders! He's had more financial backing that any Vale manager since Horton when we were in the Championship.

I'm just enjoying Vale fans meltdown at losing their manager to a "much smaller club"

I don't see any meltdowns on here or on OVF, really. I would say it is more a reaction of surprise, mostly because 24 hours ago he said he hadn't spoken to you. Either way you look at it, it's a sidewards step at best. To say it isn't is a bit silly.

Season before this one he very, very nearly got us relegated. He's also had a very steady budget for this league this season.

The Sentinel has summed it up quite well, hes left us to join a smaller club with less the history we have and the concern is why? We shouldnt be losing our manager to smaller clubs and the worry is why and what has happened to cause him to leave. We know there has been unrest off the field so what has happened and how will this affect our hopes of getting a decent replacement.

In terms of losing Page as a manager he did ok this season, diabolically last season so dont think anyone is having a meltdown on losing him, but more whats the state off the field at Vale Park if he is going sideways at best?
