Fantastic appointment that would be, about the first one these new owners have got right!

If he leaves Northampton for Charlton with their current situation he must be being sold a promise and a budget. Things on the up?

Would be a very small start.

But certainly shows signs that they are finally beginning to recognise they've consistently got it wrong and are beginning to listen to fans.

I don't trust them, and if they have promised him a budget and control over the side he would be mad to believe them!

With the greatest of respects, would he want to leave Northampton for Charlton?

Not something I ever expected to type but lets face it with the way things are at The Valley, it's hardly somewhere people would want to work at the moment

I agree completely, and if I were to offer him some honest advice it would be to swerve it and stay where he is.

As always with these things, I will only believe it once it's official but it's more trying to cling on to this feint hope that even if its not to be Wilder the club at least are finally approaching the right type of manager.

Club have just tweeted we've accepted an official approach for both Chris Wilder and Alan Knill. It's a step up on the managerial ladder, and I'd wish him nothing but the best should he go. Keeping us up, saving the club, giving us days like yesterday (open top bus parade), should he choose to go I'll be desperate for him to succeed.

He'll clearly be after certain reassurances from Roland etc, which I'd think will play a big part.

Big budgets are one thing but the fans have surely not been protesting for no reason. Hes survived one dodgy owner this season, why go to another one?

Saying that would go with only positive memories and wishes. Been fantastic for us, the concern would be seeing him taking our players as well!

This is when he'd start to lose my respect

Rumour has it he's been offered huge money, both his own wage and transfer budget.

Can see a Chalton equivalent version of this in August at the Valley.

Where's that come from out of interest?

The part that interests me is that Alan Knill is being interviewed too, this really is a change of approach from the club. Targeting a British manager is one thing and now it seems we're happy for him to have his own no2 also.

Local press down our end mate. Alan Knill is a big part of our success, a very good link between manager and players and very good friends with Wilder and I don't think he'd take the job without him

Best of luck to him and Knill if they go, done amazing work for our club and I hope he does just as well for Charlton.

Wish Chris the best but Id be steering well clear of the Charlton job, the state their in at the moment. Yes he managed to deal with issues at Northampton but Charltons issues look more serious.

Our Chairman is emphasising the need for a quick decision, and has to all parties apparently.

Kelvin Thomas says he'd be surprised if a deal wasn't done so it's pretty much nailed on.

Thoughts turn to our replacement now

If Charlton get Wilder and have money to spend, I wouldn't be suprised if they came in for our two best players Dean Cox and Jay Simpson.

Like this.

Charlton still crap (due to chairman/board/whoever) and manage to potentially screw up a.reasonably promising work in progress at Noton.

Just need the idiots in charge at Sheffu to poach Flitcroft from Bury, the Shakers to replace him with Dickov/Saunders/Ferrgie Minor, .Swindon to abandon the loan market and one or two other equally unlikely scenarios and we'll piss this tinpot league next year...:)

Poor from Wilder, very strange move.

Is it poor? despite all that is going on you can't begrudge him wanting to at least talk with us. It's easy to be sucked in to Roland's lies, plenty of staff and fans have been in the last 2 and a bit years.

Anyway it's nowhere near home and hosed yet as this Charlton blog perfectly states -

There’s one other little road bump. Wilder and Knill tomorrow will have to sit down with Katrien Meire to negotiate a contract. Chris, Alan, look into those eyes and you will see dishonesty as big as a bed sheet. From Kelvin Thomas to Pinocchio. Good luck.

It isn't poor, he doesn't owe us anything. Unless you mean poor choice of next job, which may be true since he has already had to deal with so much drama behind the scenes here.

Yeah no issues with CW seeking this opportunity, will probably double his wage and also have a lot higher wage budget to play with, he'd be mad to not at least look at it.

He doesn't owe us anything.

It will be interesting to see who we replace him with.

I just think it's an unnecessary risk, assuming he will take it. That Roland makes Cellino look like a saint so there's pressure on Wilder to succeed or he'll sack him, it's also a strange time to leave Northampton.

Perhaps a risk in terms of the disruptive influence that the whole board/fans could potentially cause problems, but in terms of finance and chance of return to the Championship/fanbase + future growth, it is a step up. It's easy to see this one from both points of view. Have Northampton offered him any change of deal or a reasonable budget next season?

Charlton's ceiling on potential is a lot higher than ours, I wouldn't blame him for going and would wish him all the best.
Taking Alan Knill with him is the package, he was very influential in our success without being headline.
I just hope that any assurances he is given are fulfilled and that he is as successful dealing with any off field aspects as he was with us...

He was in line to sign a new deal, apparently our most lucrative ever offered to a manager. He would also have had a reasonable budget for next year.

Really not sure who we'd go after to replace him, we are receiving compensation from Charlton so I suppose we could be looking at managers under contract. The three names mentioned most are Chris Powell, Neal Ardley and Paul Tisdale but who knows if they're attainable. It's an odd situation as it looks like quite an attractive job, so no one really knows where to aim their sights in terms of a replacement.

If he takes the position I think it is a poor choice from a career move point of view. I read a piece by Chris Powell where he stated players were forced upon him, mainly Belgian teenagers, who couldn't even cut it in training let alone an actual game and that was the stuff he could put up with. Wilder is unlikely to lose his job at Northampton so the only reason you would currently go to Charlton is for the money. First hint of poor form will most likely get him the sack. Still if Charlton offer him a 5 year contract on mega money then I suppose it's worth doing, he might be gone by Christmas and get a nice fat pay off.
Who knows, if things are going badly at Northampton he could well be back there by January! Also if Chris Powell is the next Cobblers manager they become my 2nd team, legend of a man.

It'll be interesting to see how this works out. Looking at the relegated teams from last season (ourselves, wigan and blackpool) I'd say that any relegated team that manages to sort itself out early in the season is likely to go on and finish high up in the table. We found that once we sorted our confidence at home that we went from a mid-table side to being comfortably in the top 6 and Wigan went from a lower mid-table side to winning it at a canter with a couple of signings and a bit of form.

Compare that to Blackpool, a team not significantly worse than either of us in relegation from the championship last season, but completely unable to pull collectively in the same direction or able to sort out behind the scenes shenanigans and they've had a dreadful season.

If Wilder can imbue Charlton with a sense of order and confidence I think they'll likely win the league next season, nobody else has close to their quality or resources IMO. If we dont go up through the playoffs it could be a nice little rivalry towards to top of league one between Charlton and ourselves.
