The key thing has been his newfound ability to defend with a straight bat and play the ball back from where it came from

That old woman holding up the match for 5 minutes will be the highlight of the series. How did she get there and where did she think she was going?

Why is Edgbaston so empty today? Saturday is usually the busiest day, particularly with a decent weather forecast as well

If only we had a competent spinner, you'd back England to win from here

Good day from England and certainly the only team who could realistically expect to go on to win from here. Hopefully scoreboard pressure will take its toll on Pakistan again

Great batting from Moeen. It's a real shame that the arse has fallen out of his bowling because he's a marvellous batsmen when he gets going.

Less bothered about Cook not declaring and more bothered about the fact Ali and Bairstow didn't try to have a 30 minute slog last night if 311 wasn't enough.

Not a chance this us anything but a bore draw, unfortunately. Which is a shame as its been a good comeback from England. The wickets just so flat it's unreal.

Absolutely wonderful effort from the whole England attack here. We've got this now. Superb stuff!

This is one of our best test wins in recent years and will be underrated.

After such a poor first innings, for virtually everyone that went out to bat and get a score, the perfect declaration, now putting Pakistan against the ropes. Super stuff.

I say that, but apart from the second test. This has been compelling stuff from both sides, seesaw cricket, and it's great to see. Pakistan come out of this with credit from my POV.

With the start we had it looked like we were going to pile runs on. Now I would be happy to see us reach 250

Really no excuse to lose four wickets in a session like that at the Oval.

Should have been five down if Riaz hadn't stupidly over-stepped the line.

Englands scoring rate once again is excellent. That said the pattern with Pakistan is generally they lack the fitness to keep up their performance throughout the day so maybe just tempering it slightly to keep wickets intact early on before cashing in late could be a better way to go.

Decent comeback in the end, Ali showing his worth having a batting line up that's so long.

Bit of grass on the wicket too, could be a good total. Need to hope the sun doesn't come out tomorrow though as things could suddenly look flat rather quickly.

That Hales decision is a rotter especially after Wilson cocked up the Stokes one recently. Someone needs to tell the thick twat what 'conclusive' means.

Ali getting in form with the bat is great as it takes pressure off his ordinary bowling and allows the option to move him and Bairstow up in the next series - hello Rashid in the subcontinent?

Good riddance James Vince. I'm all for giving extended looks but he's had 2 home series and not shown anything to suggest he's a Test player.

Regardless of the decision, Hales got out playing a lazy shot again. I suspect he is only staying in the side because there is absolutely no one else staking a claim. Root worries me, he got out again to a poor shot, and that is becoming a recurring theme, something he wasn't doing a year ago. Getting complacent maybe?

Ballance is another one who played a lazy shot and paid for it, but he knows he's only keeping the slot warm for when Stokes returns.

Vince I'd stick with, he's got a weakness outside off but is working to deal with it. He again got another snorter today, but I've seen plenty of him over the last two years to know he has the quality to become a Test regular with the right coaching.

Ali impressed me, cool innings at a time of crisis. If he could consistently bowl and bat well in one game he could become a very good all-rounder, but at the moment it's either one or t'other.

If England get a quick breakthrough in the morning, and I don't mean Yasir, I feel they may run through Pakistan fairly quickly.

Bit of weird post considering the exact problem is that he has shown he is a test player, in various games. But he's not showing enough. To suggest he's not shown anything is a bit of strange statement.
