I suspect she realised early on that she just wasn’t fit enough to compete at that level, at least not against an in-form Halep, and the mental lapses came from that.

Bit of a poor spectacle, IMO. A grand slam finalist should not be breathing out of their arse after a set and a third (approx. 45 minutes of play), but I can’t say I blame Serena, really. She’s been in similarly bad shape numerous times before and won, such is the sheer rubbishness of women’s tennis. Really not that ridiculous to think she could do it again.

Amusing to think that whatever Federer and Djokovic do tomorrow will earn them the same prize money as the ladies earned for their 56 minutes of work today. Another victory for equality!
It is a victory for equality, it took Wimbledon over 30 years to react to equal pay. The women have no say in how long they play. And lets not forget outside the GS the norm for both women and men is 3 sets.

The pundits pretty much said that really - lack of matches caught up with Williams once she faced a top class player with gave her the run around.

It is a victory for equality.
It’s equal pay for unequal work, since the men spend more time on court and produce a higher-quality and more commercially valuable product.

The argument for equal pay was stronger 25 years ago, when the women had creative rallies and the men did little more thrash unreturnable serves at each other. But since the mid-2000s, it’s not even been close. No one in attendance today (perhaps aside from the players’ friends, relatives, etc) wouldn’t have swapped their ticket for yesterday’s Federer vs. Nadal semi-final if they been given half a chance.

In this context, equal pay is just tokenistic, politically correct pandering. A lot of people call that equality and celebrate it. I don't.

Then blame the organisations the women have no say in how many sets they play so shouldn't be penalized for it. And as I stated before men and women both play 3 sets outside the grand slams so time for to change it to either GS 3 sets for all or 5 sets for all in GS...a lot of people question the excitement of 3 sets again that's not the womens fault, in fact they are eager to play 5 set matches. Athletes are paid for winning, not for how long it takes them to win. Some of the US open womens matches gained higher ratings then men despite them being 3 sets....that would likely grow if they were 5 sets.

If you simply go on popularity then why single tennis out? male figure skaters and gymnasts who participate in sports in which the ladies’ side generally attracts far more spectators should be paid less for their achievements than women but they don't.

Contrast to the ladies final in the Men's doubles final .

4 hours long - 4 tiebreaks.

Now had to close the roof.

Thought Federer was the best player the whole way through and still lost. Not often you see the better player lose in a tennis match really. Honestly thought there was no way that he wouldn't win from 40-15 up on his own serve to win the title.

Shame for Federer as you say he was the better player but seems to choke at vital moments sadly.

Serena Williams is doing that thing again where it looks like she's never played tennis before in her life, yet again in a GS Final.
