Hey guys, do you remember that episode of Archer when Archer made 8 sex jokes in a row and the 7th one was almost quite funny, then he did something idiotic and is a massive c*** to everyone and then he goes on a binge and Pam said some funny things about alcohol abuse and then another one of the loathsome characters does something to save the situation but one of them got shot? They never really quite resolved anything, but that doesn't matter because it's like a kinda play on old spy movies isn't it?

Mine!

(I haven't seen the newer season, so apologies if the 2000 episodes were some twattery about a Texan propane salesman, but the early ones are tres bien).

Absurdist French show. Madcap and surreal, possessing a Pythonesque streak of satiric irreverence going on outright disdain, spirit of '68 and all that. Essentially avant garde in many respects... 4th wall breaking, anarchic contempt for plot and logic, even soundtracks worked on by INA GRM daddio Robert Cohen-Solal (how is that for bonafides), but extremely popular and somewhat of a pop-culture touchstone even now.

I wonder if there's some point to be made about audiences (and artists?) being more receptive to formal chicanery in this medium. Grammar/ideas/techniques that would be deemed 'challenging'/'difficult' in a live action context are almost routine in animation. 3 or 4 of my list bear that out in one or way or another. Something to do with surrealists and children, probably, I dunno.

As an aside, everything written about the show insists that it's unknown outside of France, which is not true since a redubbed version aired on ITV in the evenings back in the day. Which is somewhat amusing in itself since one of the two races of characters in it are a pretty obvious and unkind caricature of priggish, bowler hat wearing Brits.

One of mine, it is amazing like Fawlty Towers, that there is far less episodes than people think. I seemed to watch hundreds as a kid; they must've all been the same ones! :D

Surprised to see Wacky Races was made in the 60's, I remember watching it as a kid in the 80's and assumed that was when it was made.

I was the same with the original Star Trek and Batman series back then and couldn't believe they were made in the Sixties.

I was a kid watching those in the 60's, loved all those shows along with my favourite Captain Scarlet.

And Wacky Races was still going strong in the 90's. Amazed that there were so few episodes.

For anyone that saw the post I made earlier, just ignore it. I won't be postponing this. I won't post any today though which I planned to. I will post a few tomorrow.

Always thought Dick Dastardly should have raced fairly as he'd have won 1/9? races like everyone else then.

A real moral to the cartoon I like that.

Any more cartoons up soon. I have very little to read now I'm banned from the Shoutbox.

Okay, if this was on Adult Swim, it can't be THAT obscure. I'll let you off this time Martino ;)

Damn, that was so close to getting on my list but I bumped it for Aoi Bungaku as my anime selection. It is very good, though.

Mine.

Short anime series by Satoshi Kon, late and pretty great auteur bod behind Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress etc. Strange stuff is happening in Tokyo and folks are getting walloped by a lad on rollerblades armed with a baseball bat. Standalone episodes that tie back together as it goes on.

Nothing has ever been written about Kon that didn’t include the term "Lynchian", and rightly so. He puts his own spin on things, but in terms of
tone and recurrent themes it's an obvious point of influence. Perhaps a little less so here than in some of his other things, actually, but still... identity, self as a construct of the gaze of others, the blurring of fantasy and reality, outward manifestations of mental/emotional disquiet.

One thing - it was a bit of a pisser to watch as a non-Japanese speaker. It’s dense with written info and bits of wordplay that require explanation, so the fan subbed version i watched was more like annotated than subtitled. I was pausing it every 2 mins to read it all the first time I watched it. That's more praise than criticism though, I reckon.

I hated Ed, Edd and Eddy.

My little sisters loved it but it annoyed the fuck out of me. That and Dexter's Lab
