Online gaming isn't, and never will be, as enjoyable as a well designed single player campaign. Actually, I'd go further than that and say the meteoric rise of online gaming in the last ten years has been to the detriment of video gaming in general. Far too often the single player aspect of a title is an afterthought, and sometimes barely even that.

It has to be pointed out though that, as an old school video game player, I've never been a big fan of online gaming so I'm aware I might be pretty much on my own with these opinions in this day and age.

I agree. The issue with online gaming is that there's always someone better than you who has played the game non-stop for months. Take FIFA for example. I'm absolutely dog-shit at it so if I play online, I get annihilated by some spotty teenager who hasn't seen the light of day for 5 months. I'd much rather play single player.

Multiplayer gaming peaked with Gauntlet for me.

An updated version of 01/02 is the stuff of dreams.
I'm pretty sure Eidos released CM 01/02 as a free download recently with the option of playing it with updated teams.

Games should not take longer than 20 hours to complete.

I have no idea how the depth of something like The Witcher 3 is appealing, I shouldn't have to dedicate weeks/months of my life to finish one game - this attitude leads to repetitive and unoriginal gameplay too just so developers can brag about map size and how many hours you're getting for your 40 quid.

SW Battlefront. EA were too busy thinking of different DLCs to create a single player mode

I agree with the broader point but it's odd that you should use TW3 as your example coz it's one of the few open-world games that has actually been able to pull it off.

Maybe, TW3 was more my example because I remember stuff like 'it takes 200 hours to 100% it' which to me is just absurd and put me off the game completely. More so than something like the Order only being 6 hours (ignoring the fact one was critically acclaimed and the other was a pile of turd)

The Bioshock series is up there with the best FPS' in the last 10 years.

Does anybody actually think otherwise? I've never seen anything to suggest that... in fact, Bioshock usually features very highly in top 10 games of all time type lists. Who the hell have you been speaking to/what have you been reading to suggest that this is anything even close to an unpopular opinion?

Fuck yes. I've been saying this for years... I think it's the AC series that eventually wore me down to this way of thinking. Too many games now are padded out with repetative, mundane shit that's boring as hell to trick you into thinking that there's loads of hours of gameplay to be had. That's not to say games can't be 50+ plus experiences and still be great (see: MGS V, Elder Scrolls/Fallout, Final Fantasy games, ect) but for the most part any game that runs longer than 20 hours or so is going to get dull far before the credits roll.

Give me a great 8 hour game over a "good" 30 hour game any day of the week.

Oh and because it's free on Xbox right now it's reminded me of another one:

Borderlands isn't very good. I don't want to say it's shit, because I did have fun with it for a bit on multiplayer, but it's closer to being shit than it is to actually being any good. It's like, it's not a piece of shit, but it's in the same toilet bowl, leaning against the shit. Crap shooting gameplay, a dull loot/rpg system and repetitive missions that you do over and over again. Grinding just isn't fun. The setting/world/sense of humour is great, which is why I actually want to play Tales from the Borderlands one day, but Borderlands 1 and 2? MEH. I'll pass. One of the most over rated series in recent years by a mile.

It's the model of sandbox content that was popularised by Ubisoft and is actually seen particularly egregiously in recent installments that used to have their own distinct identities (Fallout & MGS V two notable examples that spring to mind). This is what happens when the industry gets too big and too profitable: it can get away with this shit because it has established a hegemony over its consumer base. Pre-order marketing, microtransactions, misleading advertising campaigns that penalised by respective regulatory bodies, overworked staff, a largely acquiescent and often unethical mainstream games journalism, an atomised and hostile 'community'. All just a few examples of things that allow developers and publishers to peddle that sort of shit.

- The best ever FPS is Medal of Honor (should be Honour) Frontline
- Tom Clancy Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is the best 3rd person/FPS ever.
- Zelda - I don't get it.
- Destiny is a superb game.
- NMS was not as bad as everyone thinks

MoH Frontline was indeed incredible. I still wouldn't say best ever, but to be fair I feel as if it does deserve at least a mention when talking about the very best of the best.

Anyone else jump on Borderlands being free for a short while but can no longer access it without the disc/buying it through the store?

Yeah but you are trying to be edgy by saying that and I spit on you for it.
